Still Alive and Well - Johnny Winter (1973)

came across this in a very low rent el-cheapo bin at one of the old Two Guys dept. stores - bagged it for .99 - when i say "el-cheapo", i mean it.

i'm not a big blues guy by any stretch, and i always trace it back to this album ... it was that White Boy (albino, in JW's caze) blues done so cotdamn ferociously perfect that spoiled me forever ... i never thought i'd top this, so i moved on from chasing the genre in earnest. this is my holy grail of bloooz.

it's as ballsy and raw as any of the punk #### i love - and Johnny's got an edge to him most can't touch ... makes for quite the explosive mix.

produced by Rick Derringer, featuring him on slide for a few tracks, and Rundgren on mellotron for a couple numbers.

but it's Johnny's tour de force show here, one of those albums ya just never forget, and never wanna be without - it's as classic as anything i've ever heard.  R.I.P.

sizzles and slides and burns ... you can have the others WBBGs, i'm gonna hang with Johnny

Still Alive and Well

Too Much Seconal

(Plz to add to Spotty list! TIA)

36.18 - Tunnel of Love - Bruce Springsteen (1987)

Artist drafted at 2.32 by @Northern Voice (Born to Run), 6.07 by @MAC_32 (The River), 7.16 by @The Dreaded Marco (Darkness etc.), 9.15 by @Chaos Commish (Live 75-85)

This is probably my third favorite Springsteen album after Darkness and Born to Run.  It's a more introspective affair delivered in the midst of professional success beyond his wildest dreams and the personal trauma of his failing marriage to Julianne Phillips.

Sometimes you have to listen past the 80s synths but the collection of songs is among Springsteen's strongest, especially the heartfelt second side (tracks 7-12).

I knew Highway 61 was gone and assumed BIABH had to have gone as well. Tough to put out 2 original albums in 1 year yet alone 2 classics.

The first three Costello albums were released in a span of a year and a half but in three different calendar years.

I'm here for the evening now.  Went to a surprisingly well attended protest in my town.  Feeling good.  Is there spreadsheet catching up or entering stuff in Spotify that I need to do?  I'll poke around.

Looks like there is.  I also owe a pick but will do spreadsheet first.

31.10 - Dave Matthews Band - Listener Supported (1999)

Live album with pretty much all of my favorite Dave songs on it.

I'm so, so sorry.  I give you permission to skip these songs when they come up on the playlist.  It's a 9-minute version of "#41" and a 14-minute version of "Two Step".

"#41"

"Two Step"

34.33 Across 110th Street - Soundtrack (1971)

This is probably the best of the '70s blaxploitation films and certainly one of the best soundtracks. Bobby Womack did the "pop" songs and JJ Johnson did the "movie theme" stuff. Two from Womack:

"Across 110th Street"

"Peace - Dot It Right"

Uruk, I added your Good/Bad/Ugly songs and the first one above, but I could not find the second one above on Spotify.  Is anyone else able to locate it?  If not, let me know if you'd rather select something else for the playlist.

I think I established early in the draft that this behaviour won't be tolerated.

Found out today that my 80 year old mother-in-law was at the same demonstration I went to yesterday.  Grammy took a knee in front of city hall.  God, I love that woman.

Never heard of this guy...and that's a great and memorable name. Really like it too- thanks for this pick!

One record.  I believe he died before the album came out.

36.16 - Elvis Costello - Spike (1989)

Listen, I know this isn't the best Elvis Costello record, or even the fifth best.  Hell, it doesn't even have The Attractions!  But it was one of a few records that are the most important parts of my college soundtrack.  I think it's been criticized for not being cohesive as an album, but that's kinda what I like about it; there is so much different stuff going on here and a little something for any mood.  Plus, Paul McCartney!

Song selections:

The "other" McCartney co-penned songs - i.e., not "Veronica":  Pads, Paws and Claws  When @simey and I start our no-kill cat shelter and TNR program, we should name it this.

Satellite - are italicized lyrics allowed on a Tuesday?  To me, these are some of his best lyrics.

She looked like she learned to dance from a series of still pictures
She's madly excited now, she throws her hands up like a tulip

She looks like an illustration of a cocktail party
Where cartoon bubbles burst in the air,
Champagne rolls off her tongue like a second language
And it should have been her biggest night
The satellite looks down on her as she begins to cry

All over the world at the very same time people sharing the same sorrow
As the satellite looks down her darkest hour is somebody's bright tomorrow

He pulled on a cigarette, in the crook of his first finger
Felt the static electric charge of her perfect hour-glass figure
As he undressed her with his eyes her weakness was his talent
How could she know as she stepped through the lights, that her dress would become
Transparent
And with his face pressed to the screen,
He muttered words he'd never dare to say if she could see him

All over the world at the very same time
People sharing the same cheap sensation the
Thrill of watching somebody watching those
Forbidden things we never mention

All over the world at the very same time people sharing the same sorrow
As the satellite looks down her darkest hour is somebody's bright tomorrow

The satellite looks down right now and forever
What it has pulled apart let no man tether his own body to his dream,
His dream to someone else
Oh no, oh no.

She went back to a pitiful compromise, he'd go back to his family
But for the matter of a thousand miles that separated them entirely
In the hot unloving spotlight, with secrets it arouses
Now they both know what it's like inside a pornographer's trousers
And in a funny way it's anonymous, the satellite
It blesses us and makes these dreams come
True...all over the world

All over the world at the very same time people sharing the same sorrow
As the satellite looks down her darkest hour is somebody's bright tomorrow

Listened to this again over the weekend.

Tramp the Dirt Down has been on my mind a lot lately.

Well I hope I don't die too soon
I pray the lord my soul to save
Oh I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave
Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live
Long enough to savor
That's when they finally put you in the ground
I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down

I am not opposed to going 50, but I am not too interested in supplemental compilation or GH rounds.   Just not something I listen to.   So if that's all it is, I would tap out.  If it's something that we are opening the gates to if people want to, but not all it is, I am for that.
