There has been some discussion recently about why the board is so liberal.  I believe there we (collectively) have moved quite a bit over the years and the purpose of these polls is to verify how much.

20 years ago I did not even bother to vote, I figured there was no real difference and Diablo II was very engrossing. I considered myself "fiscally conservative and socially liberal", you know, like a complete idiot.

20 years ago, I was 15 but pretty heavily conservative, even at the time. The past 2 decades have shown me that neither extreme is good, and my views have moved much closer to center on most issues.

I was a registered Republican in 2000 and voted for Bush, while living in CA. Originally registered as an Independent in CO when I moved in 2005 but changed my registration to Democrat to vote for Obama in the 2008 primaries. I can see a path where I might vote Libertarian at some point in the future, but it would involve the party embracing something like UBI -- getting to a stronger safety net with less direct government involvement. Seems like a logical evolution at some point.

I remember telling my friends who were interested in talking politics how can someone so unexceptional and frankly dim as W be the president.

And here we are.

Grew up pretty center/right.  I graduated college in 2000, so I was definitely more center, maybe even a bit left.  Then I got out into the real world, and I would consider myself a bit to the rightish, libertarian.

20 years ago I voted for W in Palm Beach County, FL on the infamous butterfly ballot.

10 years ago i was on these boards ranting against Obamacare and TARP.

5 years ago, i was looking forward to voting against Hillary.

Today, i don't think i can ever vote republican again (OK, thats not true, i voted in the Republican primary last week, but it was really more about voting against Lindsey Graham).

Not sure they best represented me...but I had voted far more Republican 20 years ago.  Voted W...never voted for Obama.

These days...the GOP had abandoned my beliefs for the most part and will take them a while to change.

Always been a registered Independent.  22 years ago I voted for Jesse Ventura for governor of Minnesota and thought he was excellent.  I was definitely more of a Democrat than Republican, especially in my early voting years. But as I age, while I support a bit more of their platform than I do the GOP's, I've realized that the DFL (they aren't still called that, are they?) itself is an ineffectual, pathetic pile of dung that cannot be trusted.

Which still places them in significantly higher esteem than the present day GOP.

Libertarian doesn't look so bad at times...

20 Years ago - Republicanish

Now - Libeterian

In the past 10 years I have ranted and raved to friends/people who will listen why we only have two choices and both of them are extremes.

I know the answer.  Because that's what the people who really run this country want us to have.

We are too dumb for anything else.

Republican - Other/None

Don't like the two party system and won't be a blind apologist for either.  Can't go Libertarian because some of their policies, and Rand Paul.

I remember how excited I was to vote for the first time ever and it being a Presidential Election where I was solidly supporting Bush. I was mostly looking at it from a “keep jobs here” and don’t over commit to free trade. Everything got derailed right away with 9/11. I naively trusted the narrative for the Iraq War. I was a big supporter of removing Saddam.  However, it became evident pretty quickly that we didn’t have a good plan of how to govern and rebuild. From there, it’s been a lot of failure  and obstruction from the Republican Party. They have gotten away from the balanced budget, emphasis on local government and belief in the right of the individual over the State that I identified with. I voted Obama for the first term but not the second because I was so unhappy about the drone strike war we were waging. I didn’t vote McCain either- nobody with Palin as a VP nomination would get my vote. She’s a joke of a politician.I abstained from voting for President that year. Ultimately, I think Obama was a good President.

Our choice to put Trump in the White House is a black eye we’ve put on ourselves. He’s a very little man and unique only in his ability to embarrass himself.

50 years old so:

Democrat in high school (anti-Reagan/Bush)

Libertarian post college (thought Clinton brilliant but morally bankrupt; desperately wanted a viable 3rd party)

Centrist for much of the aughts (thought Bush a dope, liked McCain save Palin, saw strengths in both Obama and Romney)

Swore off Hillary as an opportunist in the 90s and looked forward to voting against her inevitable Presidential run UNTIL I saw what she was running against.  Pulled lever for her with glee.

Will do so for Biden regardless of his obvious weaknesses.  Will NOT vote Republican in a national election for a very, very long time.

Look at the Trump and the FBI thread for Trump/Barr trying to oust a US Attorney for other reasons why I cannot and will not support any current Republican for a long long time.

My political views haven't changed much in the past 20 years.  Libertarian then, Libertarian now.

If I was forced to choose between the two major parties, the GOP would have been a no-brainer for me 20 years ago.  But Trumpism is just illiberal white nationalism mixed with incompetence and gratuitous cruelty, and obviously I'm not interested in that and I strongly prefer a moderate Democrat in the mold of Biden.  The left has its own illiberal and crazy wing that is becoming more ascendant, but at least for now the Democratic party is the only major party with any business governing.

Grew up in a very Republican household and definitely reflected those views. Since about the tea party and very much over the past 5 years I’ve found myself flying left on many issues except one: abortion. Ironically, that issue is what has moved me hardest left economically.  I’m Dem for the long foreseeable future because of this era.

Still get the definite icky feeling from far-left identity politics, however.

I started out Republican by default because my dad was Republican. My older brother was a rabid Nixon fan. Complete with Nixon Now bumper sticker on his car in the '80s. 🤣

I grew out of that pretty quickly upon entry into high school and was a dyed in the wool D by the time I got to voting age. I have voted for two Republicans, but never in a general election.

20 yrs ago, i was a reality leftist. now, i'm a fantasy leftist
I guess I was a Clinton Democrat, moderately left. Pretty much progressive liberal bordering on socialist & open to anarchy at this point.

ETA: Reagan Conservative back in the day

well, i was hoping my post would get more reaction than it did. we have broken our government with our fantasy politics and our spectral identification is become little more important than our avatars

which reminds me....nevermore?
my childhood vision of myself was to one day live in a stone tower overlooking the wild west coast of Ireland, thinking great Wizard of Oz-type thoughts, squawked occasionally to temporality by my familiar to the ethos, a giant black crow on a gilded perch. i've always seen them as personae in some fashion. and the icon was one of the few unused from the limited set offered by Fanball when i joined them

Still opposing the conservative establishment and urging the Democrats to get younger and move leftward. And by younger, I mean bypassing you Genexers.
So basically Brooklyn Dodgers fan circa 1954

50 years old.

Firm republican in 2000, on the socially permissive side.

Democrat in 2020, beefing up the anti-identity-politics and small steps right wing of the party.  Switched in 2018, threw up in my mouth a little.  Didn't vote for either Hillary or Donald.  Just want some sanity, some honor, and stay out of my face.

I don’t remember creating this alias but apparently I must have

ive always felt more connected to Dem candidates, but 2018 was the first time I ever voted.  Will vote straight Dem this year, depending on how things go I may go back to being indifferent

Republican- Independent. I voted all GOP straight across the board up until 2016. And while I now consider myself Independent I have never been thrilled about the Tea party direction the GOP took and what Trump has done to the party. But I can’t see myself voting for any Republicans that enabled Trump. I am also realistic enough to know that regardless of what happens in 2020 the party won’t turn to the likes of Romney or Kasich who I could support so my guess is I will voting Blue as my way of penalizing those Republicans.

This is where I am. I would consider myself a classic liberal which means I essentially have no political home at all right now.

I should add the other part for me: politics has actually become much LESS important to me. That’s largely due to my religious beliefs becoming much deeper and the lens that I view the world and people through becoming less about politics and the way I think things SHOULD be, and more about seeing people where they are and caring for them like I believe God cares for them.

The tea party played a huge role in losing me.  My shift away from the GOP and to more of an independent/no party stance started well before trump.

Other/none to Other/none. Like 2018 I'm voting blue at all things federal, but like in 2018 it has nothing to do with the blue side of things.

This is pretty much exactly me.  I’ve always floated in the middle.  The most “left” I ever was was during Obamas first run, I got on the change train but only after McCain picked Palin. I pretty much felt like a man without a party for a long time now.

All of you who feel like you're without a party, if your congesscritter is a Democrat you should be asking them to support the FRA so you can vote for an alternative party candidate in '22 without worrying about throwing your vote away.

This describes me pretty closely as well - although I'm pretty far left on social issues (and just right of center on fiscal issues).

25 years ago in high school I would have shocked that future me would ever vote anything but democrat because the christian right tried to dominate and control free speech/ and not much more I oppose than that.

Registered and have mostly voted libertarian

Today completely oppose the democrat party because they are now like the Christian Right was 25 years ago and try to dominate and control free speech and not much more I oppose than that.

I have slowly come to despise the politics of the left and the right. I have no confidence in either party right now.

20 years ago- Firmly in the Boortz wing of the Libertarian camp, which was really thinly veiled Republican, even though I didn't really know it at the time.

Today- Ugh. If there were a never-Trumper Republican in my state, then that might go a long way, but I voted for Abrams last time around. Kemp is such a sleaze. Will definitely be suppressing my gag reflex to pull the handle for Biden this year.
