Can we continue the discussion about masks?

It is pretty obvious why it became that way. When the leader says jump you jump, you don't want anyone to doubt your faith by disobeying. Any mention of the early CDC warning as an excuse is just an excuse at this point since the last few months have been all about wearing a mask.

Why do you think everyone will eventually have contact with it?

He keeps saying "exposed" to it.  0 clue what he means by that though.

In the same building as someone who unknowingly has it?  Being in direct physical contact with someone who is positive?

No, their were lots of more local leaders with an anti-mask agenda and I am sure plenty of internet and talk radio pundits also pushing the story that wearing a mask is giving up your freedom.

So ####in dumb.

I know but it's true. My friend had an encounter yesterday at the grocery store with this. He had his mask and airpods in and then some old guy without a mask came up to him waiving his hands talking. My friend just ignored him and walked away. He saw him later talking with someone else and listened, the old guy was going up to random people to explain to them that they don't have to wear masks because of the Constitution and that this isn't Communist Russia.

There is a part of me that wants to buy several dozen masks and when I go to the grocery store offer one free of charge to anyone who is not wearing a mask. And of course I would need to be passive aggresive and make a comment like "you must have just forgot yours at home - so here is an extra for you"

And by "yours" you mean sense of common decency.

I'm just dumbfounded. I can't even comprehend a train of thought that includes that there are absolutely no precautionary measures, including wearing a mask,  that can be taken to avoid catching a virus. Maybe it's too many sci-fi movies or something? Like Sharknadoflu? Does a movie like that exist that would lead one to believe that if there is a virus there is no way to avoid catching it?

The only thing more dumbfounding is people still replying to him.  This is another internet phenomenon- if we encountered this person in real life we’d walk away and not engage.

I see lots of stuff on my facebook feed now how the mask is basically the first step to.... Communism.... socialism.. I don't know.

Anyone on this board who REALLY buys into this... Can you expand on this so I can understand this line of thinking? Here is one that was shared today I saw..

Quote

This makes the point today and it must be shared throughout the Nation:

-They closed your business.
-They closed your church.
-They closed your parks.
-They closed your beaches.
-They banned funerals.
-They banned graduations.
-They made you wear masks.
-They banned dads in delivery rooms.

But they allow riots, vandalism, arson, looting and the destruction of the American Flag and American History.

They Lied. They Lied. They Lied. They Lied. They Lied.
They Lied. They Lied. They Lied. They Lied. They Lied.

We were all played:

MODERN PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE -
Scare people with a virus.
Place them in quarantine.
Count the number of dead every second of every day in every news headline and cycle.
Close all businesses. 40,000,000 out of jobs. Causing: Peak unemployment.

Remove entertainment: parks, gyms, bars, restaurants, sports.
No dating.
No touching. Mask people. Dehumanize them.
Close temples and churches. Create a vacuum.

Let depression and anxiety and desperation set in.

Then... ignite hatred and civil war. Civil unrest.

Empty the prisons because of the virus and fill the streets with criminals.
Send in Antifa to vandalize property as if they are freedom fighters.

Undermine the law.
Loot.
Attack law enforcement, but tell government to order a stand-down.

Folks, We are all being bated by adversarial governments who want to destroy America - China, Iran, Russia.
Have the Far Left abuse the racial wars to fuel the fires.

And, in an election year, have Democrats and spineless Rhinos blame all of it on President Trump.

This is what modern warfare looks like, folks...

Walk away from the Marxists and Terrorists."

Be alert as to what's coming next. Rest assured it is going to be a long, hot Summer and a wicked Fall.

After all, it is election year.

I just can't wrap my head around how this is all just a ploy to somehow take our rights away and institute some crazy marxist stuff.

I've even seen a facebook post invoking Godwin's law saying anyone wearing a mask would happily take a train to a concentration camp.

They forgot to mention that they will be coming for your guns. Otherwise this list seems like pretty typical scare tactic talking points from “one of the sides”, unfortunately. People on all sides need to calm down, stuff like this doesn’t help anything.

It's passed around by the same types who were forwarding email chains that said Obama was working to turn the country Muslim.  It's fear-based propaganda meant for the low information voter and there's not anything more to decipher than that.

I am tired of everyone.  The ones who say it is giving up your freedom.  The protesters who march in large packs without masks. It gets tiresome to try to get people on board.

RETIRED SURGEON Sam Laucks

“OK, here’s my rant about masks:

I have spent the past 39 years working in the field of surgery. For a significant part of that time, I have worn a mask. I have worked with hundreds (probably thousands) of colleagues during those years, who have also worn masks. Not a single one us of became ill, passed out or died from lack of oxygen. Not a single one of us became ill, passed out or died from breathing too much carbon dioxide. Not a single one us of became ill, passed out or died from rebreathing a little of our own exhaled air. Let’s begin here by putting those scare tactics to rest!

(It is true that some people, with advanced lung diseases, may be so fragile that a mask could make their already-tenuous breathing more difficult. If your lungs are that bad, you probably shouldn’t be going out in public at the present time anyway; the consequences if you are exposed to Covid-19 would likely be devastating.)

~ “But”, you ask, “can’t viruses go right through the mask, because they are so small?” (“Masks keep viruses out just as well as a chain link fence keeps mosquitoes out,” some tell us.) It is true that individual virus particles can pass through the pores of a mask; however, viruses don’t move on their own. They do not fly across the room like a mosquito, wiggle through your mask like a worm, or fly up your nose like a gnat. The virus is essentially nothing more than a tiny blob of genetic material. Covid-19 travels in a CARRIER – the carrier is a fluid droplet- fluid droplets that you expel when you cough, sneeze, sing, laugh, talk or simply exhale. Most of your fluid droplets will be stopped from entering the air in the room if you are wearing a mask. Wearing a mask is a very efficient way to protect others if you are carrying the virus (even if you don’t know that you are infected). In addition, if someone else’s fluid droplets happen to land on your mask, many of them will not pass through. This gives the wearer some additional protection, too. But, the main reason to wear a mask is to PROTECT OTHERS. Even if you don’t care about yourself, wear your mask to protect your neighbors, co-workers and friends!

~ A mask is certainly not 100% protective. However, it appears that the severity of Covid-19 infection is at least partially “dose-dependent.” In other words, the more virus particles that enter your body, the sicker you are likely to become. Why not decrease that volume if you can? “What have you got to lose?!”

~ “But doesn’t a requirement or a request to wear a mask violate my constitutional rights?” You’re also not allowed to go into the grocery store if you are not wearing pants. You can’t yell “fire” in the Produce Department. You’re not allowed to urinate on the floor in the Frozen Food Section. Do you object to those restrictions? Rules, established for the common good, are component of a civilized society.

~ “But aren’t masks uncomfortable?” Some would say that underwear or shoes can be uncomfortable, but we still wear them. (Actually, being on a ventilator is pretty darned uncomfortable, too!) Are masks really so bad that you can’t tolerate them, even if they will help keep others healthy?

~ “But won’t people think I’m a snowflake or a wimp if I wear a mask?” I hope you have enough self-confidence to overcome that.

~ “But won’t I look stupid if I wear a mask?” I’ve decided not to dignify that question with an answer!!

~ “But I never get sick; I’m not worried.” Well, then, wear a mask for the sake of the rest of us who are not so perfect!

There is good evidence that masks make a real difference in diminishing the transmission of Covid-19. Please, for the sake of others (and for the sake of yourself), wear your mask when in public. It won’t kill you!

P.S. - And, by the way, please be sure that BOTH your nose and mouth are covered!

Recommendations around mask usage are confusing. The science isn't. Evidence shows that masks are extremely effective to slow the coronavirus and may be the best tool available right now to fight it.”

It is interesting how the GOP became the champs of no mask cuz muh CO2. I wonder what surveys or focus groups went into that.

Especially considering that it was a republican senator that was first to push for masks publicly and then Trump brought it up in one of his daily briefings not long after.

So obviously a switch flipped right after that. Must have been some serious emails and phone calls that flooded in from angry voters and then some interesting meetings and discussions must have followed.

One of my relatives on Facebook is convinced that the anti-mask movement is a disinformation campaign spearheaded by Russia and a cabal of socialists (including Biden, AOC, Bill Gates, George Soros, and the usual suspects). His theory is that the Russians/socialists realized that they could exploit Trump's vanity to slow down America's recovery, thereby sweeping Biden into office, which would then necessitate a switch from capitalism to socialism in order to recover from the economic fallout caused by all the people who wouldn't wear masks.

I mean, it's kind of nuts. But it's also kind of what's happening.

Just to make sure I understand, this Facebook theory is that all the people currently begging and pleading with the populace to wear masks are actually, secretly, behind-the-scenes, trying to get the people to refrain from wearing masks?  Moreover, the people who subscribe to this theory are smart enough to figure all this out, but also dumb enough to still fall for it and resist wearing masks?

No wonder I don't use Facebook...

Well, my relative's theory is that Russia started it by exploiting Trump's vanity and by exploiting the "BUT MY FREEDOM!" mentality of Trump supporters, which then caused Democrats to reflexively pick the other side (even though he thinks Dems would be anti-mask too if it weren't for the Russians). Then the Socialist Cabal realized what was happening and piled on by pushing all of their supporters to wear masks, knowing that Trump supporters would automatically reject masks because Dems were doing it.

He doesn't think that the majority of pro-mask people are secretly hoping that the populace won't wear masks. That mentality is only held by the cabal of socialists who are pulling the strings.

Right, that makes a lot more sense.  I'm still curious, though.  Since he sees through the secret plan, that means he realizes that he should wear a mask in order to thwart it, right?

He was all-in on masks back in January. He used to live in Korea and there's no partisan opinion of masks over there. He's a Trump voter (not "Trump supporter" as he repeatedly tells us), and kind of assumed that Trump would be pro-mask and that the nation would rally around him in a united effort to be the first country to defeat the Chinavirus (as he calls it). He's kind of disappointed that Trump has dropped the ball, but he blames the Dems more than he blames Trump. He says that it's the Dems' fault for making masks a partisan issue by "insulting" Republicans and trying to make them "feel bad" for not wearing masks. He said that if Dems really wanted the country to defeat the virus, they wouldn't "gloat" about all the mask-wearing countries that are doing better than America.
