Hack's Industrial, Techno & 90's Electronica Favorites - Friday Night Dance Party (1 Viewer)

Come for the beats...stick around for the hot goth chicks.

Let's start it off with one of the best known industrial acts and one of their top hits.

Front 242 - Welcome to Paradise

https://youtu.be/osQMG9f0HC0
Awesome. Will there be more Front 242? They were a big part of the soundtrack of my high school/college years (though that stretches back into the 80's) along with Cabaret Voltaire, Ministry...

Definitely have an eye on this thread. Saw the title and immediately the whole song started playing in my head. I feel like my taste has become bimodel over the years, where I have got either super poppy with some things, and then more noisy with others. Ministry, FLA, Skinny Puppy, and others were staples to my mid 90's to early 2000s playlists though. Curious how broad your definition of Industrial, Techno, and Electronic is compared to mine. Also, doubt this will make a list because it is not a real band, but the Tetsuo The Iron Man soundtrack is pretty industrial:

Alright...we've got some interest.  Next up:  Fluke

They are probably my favorite underground or unheard of electronic act of the 90s. They had a few popular club hits like Slid which was also in Sliver, one of Billy Baldwin's finest performances. :lmao:

But my favorite song from them is Bullet and I love this remix:  https://youtu.be/lYTIayIHeiE

Lot's of the artists I'll highlight were on the WaxTrax label which made its claim to fame in Chicago at two different locations. If you haven't seen it yet, there is a fantastic documentary (Industrial Accident) about the two guys who started it and all the craziness over the years and how poorly they actually ran the business.

Pigface is weird for me, where I had a 6 month stretch where I really liked them and listened to them a ton, and then I was just... done.

Uh oh. My next is pick in the DI draft was gonna be '90s dance. :scared:

Hack might be proud. I've already taken Daft Punk, DJ Shadow, and Alice Deejay and am planning on a '94-'98 run on dance music.

Before I get too much further into this, I need to highlight the top three most influential artists and a song from each that really got me sucked into this whole genre back in the early to mid 90s.

Chemical Brothers - Leave Home -  https://youtu.be/f0_pU7F5E3U

Underworld - Mmm... Skyscraper I Love You -  https://youtu.be/A5sm-c7EIus

New Order - Blue Monday - https://youtu.be/FYH8DsU2WCk

edit to add:  Blue Monday was released in 83 but this kids from the country didn't discover anything other than hair metal and classic rock until I moved to the big city.

Where is the line between popular songs with electronic components and things that are considered electronica or techno. I am not a purist (a hot dog is definitely a sandwich). Like, to be contrarian, convince me that Britney Spears - Toxic does not belong here. While maybe an extreme example, I feel like many things are not seen as contained within these topics because they got popular, while if they remained underground it would be "cooler" to listen to them.

Are you on FB? There's a pretty decent Wax Trax group. Lots of folks from that scene post fairly regularly, including Martin Atkins, Frankie Nardiello and Jared from Chemlab.

Yes...it all starts with the artist first.  That would not make the list.

Funny enough, Traci Lords (yes, that Traci Lords), has an album that sounds almost exactly like Lords of Acid but worse. Really missed the opportunity to call it Traci Lords of Acid.

Though about mentioning Lords of Acid but was not sure if the content would fly here.
I think she also had a song on the Mortal Kombat soundtrack which is very solid.

Yea, I think that song is the main single from the album the other one I linked to is on.

In the early 2000's I got big into more aggressive industrial rock stuff like Aslan Faction, Combichrist, Suicide Commando. I have mostly lost interest in that style (and it is infested with Nazis), but I still like some songs.

Is anyone familiar with Author and Punisher? I keep getting recommended songs to my weekly playlists on Spotify, and for the most part they all seem decent, though I have not explored it yet.

Glad you're doing this Hack.  Was thinking a few weeks back that I should do an ultimate industrial/goth DJ setlist but figured you would be the only one to post in it.  Happy to see that's not the case.

I had a sweet 242 shirt with Tyranny for You symbols on the front and bolded "PUNISH YOUR MACHINE" on the back.  Tended to raise a lot of questions around campus.

I found an OG vinyl of Front by Front last year but was disappointed that Welcome to Paradise wasn't actually on the LP, just the vinyl and cassette.

I tended to veer in the direction of industrial dance and some of the harder and acid-like techno.

Was just going to tag you.  This thread would not be complete with commentary or contributions from you!

Pigface is weird for me, where I had a 6 month stretch where I really liked them and listened to them a ton, and then I was just... done.
Pigface toured again last year and came through Baltimore.  Was debating whether to see them and then remembered I never even really liked them in the 90s.  Except their one mash-up with Evil Mothers ruled and absolutely filled the floor every time.

Pigface w/ Evil Mothers - Sick/Asp/F###

Also, a lot of respect for Ad.ver.sary for going after some bands they are opening for a while back, not super familiar with their sound but like the song in the video. I think I have an album somewhere.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBS0kejiWFM  - note has some nudity, so not SFW (note note - now I am guaranteeing people will click on it).

One summer, I got a two-hour/week late night DJ slot at the local Ocean City, MD alternative station.  I always tried to mix in a few industrial songs so played Supernaut one night.  A bunch of people called in to ask who that was, and after saying "1000 Homo DJs" on air, I was asked by management not to play them again.

There may or may not be pics or video of scorchy and hack at a goth club in Chicago.
I forgot you had video.  I also may have pictures of myself in army green shorts, camo thigh highs, and doc boots,  And a really bad grebo hair cut.

Was not sure if Electronica or Techno was a more constrained category to be adjacent to Industrial for this thread, or if it was more broad to contain stuff like that.
I think techno probably is closer, but electronica has a pretty wide spectrum for what it entails and that is subjective anyway.  Pretty much anything goes.  Just no trance.

Now it's time for some LORDS of ACID

Artwork on album cover NSFW
I primarily clicked on this for the NSFW part ... and it took me to a Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear video ... I began to get very anxious.

Luckily, it was just an ad.

Nice.

In for thread. 👍

I'll catch the rest of the music a little later.

BTW: I remember when you floated this thread in Shuke's 10 million and grow'n thread. Glad it made it.

Reading this thread feels like I missed out on a really cool scene.
Lol. Not sure that anyone who saw the odd groupings of goths and rivetheads dancing like ghouls (goths) or ninjas (rivetheads) at the local club ever thought "Damn they're cool."

I do have go give it up for Florida goths though. Walking around campus in full makeup, leather, and hideous puffy shirts when it's 100 degrees out took real dedication to the cause.
