For the life of me I can’t understand how a person with such openly extreme views like this can win a seat in Congress. There’s no way she could honestly go in the Congress and work in good faith to get anything done believing as she does. I just can’t wrap my head around it.  Can someone please help me understand. No shtick please, honestly looking for thoughts on how this happens.

Honestly...no clue.  I mean, you can maybe see small town council or a state rep from some small place...but getting elected to congress with those views...just scary that people support that.  And a sign of the division...vote for whoever isn't the democrat.

I assumed the voters didn't know but I haven't been following all that closely.  Will they care in the general?  I'm skeptical.

Before running for office, Republican congressional candidate Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote dozens of articles as a "correspondent" for a conspiracy news website, according to archived web pages uncovered by NBC News.

In posts published on the now-defunct "American Truth Seekers" website in 2017, Greene wrote favorably of the QAnon conspiracy theory, suggested that Hillary Clinton murdered her political enemies, and ruminated on whether mass shootings were orchestrated to dismantle the Second Amendment.
In some 59 posts for the website, according to her author bio page, Greene commented on news of the day in blogs that built on articles from far-right outlets like Breitbart and fake news websites including YourNewsWire. The American TruthSeekers website is now inactive, but Greene's posts were found by NBC News through the Internet Archive's WayBack machine.

In one 2017 AmericanTruthSeekers post, Greene chronicled what she claimed was "disturbing behavior that seems to keep raring it's ugly heads. Child Sex, Satanism, and the Occult all associated with the Democratic Party."

In January 2018, Green wrote about QAnon, the right-wing conspiracy theory that claims President Donald Trump is leading a secret war against a "deep state" of Satan worshiping pedophiles. The conspiracy movement is led by an anonymous user on a fringe internet forum who goes by "Q" and posts cryptic messages.

"Recently, there has been a lot of chatter in small circles among those who search for the truth," Greene wrote. "There has been an anonymous voice, with obvious intelligence beyond the normal person telling of things to come. They call themselves Q. Make no mistake, Q is a patriot."
In another post, "Possible Las Vegas Motive Uncovered???" Greene questioned whether the 2017 shooting that killed 58 concert-goers in Las Vegas was orchestrated as a plan to dismantle the Second Amendment.

Greene also weighed in on the murder of Seth Rich, a Democratic National Committee staffer, suggesting he had not been killed during an attempted robbery, as police say, but murdered by Democratic forces. Rich's death has been fodder for any number of conspiracy theories, some of which have reached mainstream conservative media outlets including Fox News.

The American Truth Seekers website shut down in 2018, but the site's corresponding Facebook page is still a popular destination for the far right and conspiracy theorists with 276,000 current followers. It's unclear who owned and operated the page; the site's main author was "Pat Rhiot," apparently a pseudonym.

Greene's penchant for conspiracy theories is well-documented. In tweets and deleted videos, Greene has voiced support for QAnon. And while speaking at a conservative conference in 2018, Greene suggested the Sept. 11 attacks were part of a government conspiracy, as first reported Thursday by left-leaning media watchdog Media Matters.

... In several now-delected Facebook videos unearthed by Politico, Greene made racist remarks about Black people, attacked Muslims as un-American and called Jewish Democratic donor George Soros a Nazi. ...
_ Marjorie Greene is almost certainly going to be a Congresswoman.

Blame gerrymandering but also the destruction of the Republican Party.

It is seriously mind boggling.  These are the same conservatives that also want to talk about the extremists on the left.   Where has the middle gone?
Love how a thread about a deranged woman being elected by Republicans to represent them somehow veers to “what happened to the middle”, as if this has anything to do with Democrats.
Bothsidesism needs to die already.

I live not to far from this area - like within 5-10 miles of some parts of district close.  These folks generally don't follow politics at all save listening to Fox News and Rush Limbaugh - and they will not vote for anyone other than a Republican.  Not excusing it but just telling you what I know to be true having lived in this area for 35 years.

I think it speaks more about not being hypocrites than anything else.  I mean, you guys had nothing but praise and admiration about "The Squad" in the Democratic Party.

If you expect others to, y'know, denounce "deranged women" (is that even acceptable?  Seems a bit misogynistic.  Aren't we supposed to #believeAllWomen anyways?) as you so eloquently put it, then maybe you should set the example.

Just sayin'.

There is, by design, no middle of consequence in gerrymandered districts.
Excellent point - that northwest corner of Georgia is not really that similar to Cobb and parts of Cherokee (where I live) - that notch you see in the district is where Cobb, Cherokee and Paulding counties are - those (especially Cobb) have slowly shifted from deep red.  Paulding and Cherokee are pretty firmly red still - Cobb has a good chance of being blue this November.

Sure I understand that but didn’t you win a primary against another Republican?

Let’s not side track this please.  There is a middle on the GOP side just like there is on the DEM side.

Any thoughts on my op?

This is a false equivalency.

So I’ve been thinking for a long time about running for office as state rep.  My idea which is crazy is i would run as an independent, fund my own campaign and run primarily that I would vote what my district wants.  Meaning I would email people on important votes and ask their imput, then vote what the majority want.  What do you think.?

I think that's a noble and honorable pursuit and if you do I wish you luck regardless of your party affiliation.

But you'll likely get crushed by another candidate with some well-connected corporate puppet masters "friends."

So should we blame gerrymandering for the destruction of Democratic Party too?..
Gerrymandering should be blamed for people who are corrupt and crazy facing little to no opposition from an opposing party. YMMV and district by district.

So yes it's generally harmful and corrosive to both parties IMO. But in terms of destruction, I don't mean electoral results, and I don't think gerrymandering is the cause of it. The GOP is in a shambles philosophically, morally and ideologically. They could win everything in 2020 and that would still be the case.

:lmao:   LIke I said classy, as always.
I'm being serious.

AOC is a fairly far left (at least for the US) politician who has relatively standard socialist/social democrat beliefs. You may disagree with her, but they are legit beliefs of how a government should behave that lots of people have. Her corresponding politician on the right would be like Rand Paul or at least what Rand Paul says he is.

But this woman believes in crazy, wild, insane conspiracy theories. That's not the opposite of AOC. That's not the opposite of anyone that I can think of. Maybe Kanye?

And I think to believe this stuff - you have to have some mental health issues. Maybe saying "deranged woman" is not appropriate. But there's something going on if you believe in Q.

I just think people are not being represented well now which is a shame.  Our government reps are slaves to their parties.  Hopefully people understand they are puppets to the monopolistic two party system.

There's plenty that think AOC might have some mental health issues  based on things she says.  I'll leave it at that and stand by my classy as always post from the original author

What? Where did that come from? If your only goal in this thread is to deflect by asking non sequiturs then you are not worth engaging.
I took issue with someone calling her deranged.  You asked about mental health.  My question makes perfect sense unless your deflecting my original post into something you want it to be.  I'm fine if you don't engage with me though.

It's okay to be misogynistic as long as the person doesn't think like you.

I agree with most of what you said regarding gop but also think democrats are in a transition as a party.

I appreciate Joe's request that we refrain from name-calling, and I try to comply because a) it's his board and b) name-calling lowers the overall quality of the dialog.  The problem is that sometimes you encounter beliefs that just aren't compatible with reasoned, rational thought.

For example, I don't believe in hard determinism.  That belief strikes me as wrong on several different levels, and even people who profess to believe in hard determinism seem to live their lives as if they didn't except when they're talking about that one particular topic.  But it's a perfectly rational point of view that a thoughtful person might adopt.  It lies well inside the universe of "intelligent but probably wrong" ideas that are worth thinking about.

I don't know how to talk about this Q stuff in a similarly respectful manner.  It's not very interesting to me for the same reason that "the earth is flat" and "the moon landing was fake" aren't very interesting to discuss, so I mostly just tune it out.  But how do you do that when you're talking about an elected official who openly traffics in this sort of thing?

I agree with most of what you said regarding gop but also think democrats are in a transition as a party.
Parties are always in transition.

Each political cycle is a game to garner the biggest coalition of voters you can.

So, as societal opinions change, parties evolve with those changes, chasing groups of voters, while trying not to lose others.

I don’t think your average Q follower is deranged.  Just misguided, gullible and having a poor level of critical thinking.

I’m not completely sure what this has to do with my original post but I do think your desire to do what you posted here is admirable.  To bring it back to my point of the thread, if I found out that you were somebody that spouted crazy conspiracy theories about the government (ie the people you were about to work with) or we overly racist, etc etc etc I would severely doubt your ability to follow through with your desire to do the will of the people.

I almost completely agree with this, with one slight addition...  yes they are slaves to their parties but their parties are slaves to big money and lobbyists. And that’s where I’m disappointed me the most in our government.  Principled people are almost nonexistent in our government today
