Woodward's new Trump book "Rage" (1 Viewer)

To clarify, if you intentionally withheld information that I believed could have saved tens of thousands of lives so that you could cash in on a book at the optimal time, I'd think you were a pretty crummy guy too. Irrespective of what I thought about Trump and his level of blame.
I am curious how you think this plays out if Woodward tells the press he just interviewed Trump who told him Covid is serious and that he's been downplaying it.

A.  Trump admits to it, tells US citizens this is something they need to take seriously, and those who didn't before change their behavior.

B.  Trump denies it and calls Woodward a bad journalist with another fake news story.  Those not taking it seriously continue to not take it seriously.

I'd bet the house it's B and that nothing Woodward does saves ten lives let alone tens of thousands.

I don't want to muck up the Stock Thread but as I posted here, the government wasn't being honest with the public.  As some of you know I sell office supplies, office furniture, IT, anything in an office.  As you can imagine there has been quite the demand for PPE since March.  The only problem was on the morning of 2/28  I received notice that the government "allocated' all masks, sanitizer, gloves and any other item you can think of in regards to healthcare.  I'm talking tens of thousands of items.  All gone.  At first I thought it made sense, get these things for the hospitals and front line people but then tell people to take precautions.  Which is pretty much what happened.  I never imagined a scenerio where being told to wear a mask for your safety would be some sort of political maneuver.  I REALLY never imagined that 6 months later people would still be arguing about the merits of wearing a mask, comparing it to Nazi Germany, or that the federal government wouldn't have implemented a plan in March.

The good news is that with the exception of latex gloves, there is plenty of PPE available.

There were a lot of us around here 19 years ago on 9/11.  We were all Americans.  We were unified and there for each other. It's incredibly sad that this was made a political issue and used to further divide the country.   So much worse they continue to lie while Americans die and too many still believe this is nothing to worry about.

One item:

Feb. 7: Trump tells Woodward he knows of airborne risks and covid is worse than worst flus

Feb 10-Mar 2, 2020: Trump holds five #MAGA rallies each attracting thousands of people in confined spaces

Nice guy!
Let's put the whole timeline together now with this new info...

People do not that just about anyone can be "nominated" for the Nobel Peace prize - right?

There are currently 318 nominees for the 2020 award.

And, this is not the first time Trump has been nominated.

But, it really does look like the whole Israel - UAE deal is made up to get Trump his nomination...
It's weird that someone should be nominated for the Peace Prize for selling F-35s to UAE

March 19: "I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down because I don't want to create a panic."

March 20: Trump's message to scared people is that Peter Alexander is a terrible reporter.

I feel like this is always a funny thing that happens in these discussions. The "well what about this".  Its like we kind of need a Dutch term or something that encompasses the following:

I have a pie (mmm pie) baked with all my anger.  In this issue, I'm going to cut a small 2 cm width slice and hand it to Bob Woodward.  I'm then going to take the rest of that big honkin' anger pie (all 95+% of the total of it) and smash it in Trump's mug.
Small effing pie (math :nerd: response)

When you're interviewing a guy who has told thousands of lies, why should you assume that he's suddenly telling the truth when he says "This is deadly"?

Also, when you're interviewing a guy who has made a career out of attacking the media and screaming "Fake News!," why should you assume that anything would change if you spoke up?
Short answer: Because you have the receipts (the audio recording).

The audio recording wouldn't have changed anything. Trump would have screamed "Fake News!" and then said "Many people are saying that I am treating the virus seriously, believe me." and the march towards 200,000 deaths would have continued unabated and the administration would not have changed course.

You know how I know this? Because that's basically what's happening right now.

Addendum to B. Trump cuts Woodward off from all access to himself and his administration.

Can you cite a time when that's mattered to Trump supporters?
That's probably too broad of a question to answer in a way that you'll feel is meaningful because it lacks an "ah ha" moment. Of course there are things that have mattered to Trump supporters. Often times those things have turned them into "former" Trump supporters.

Good point, there were no "sides" after 9/11.  Sad that "news" opinion shows have caused so much division in the United States (and I'm not saying one side is right and the other is wrong...).  I don't see this country coming together anytime soon :(

IIRC, the country was pretty divided right around Clinton's impeachment, though

Yep the "grab them" quote on tape would've ended any other presidential run, not this guy.  Tapes of paying off a porn star, nope no effect.  Tapes of quid pro quo, nope he didn't mean it that way...it's a crazy time we live in.

Meanwhile those same people are convinced Fauci is running a huge scheme with the pharmaceutical companies, Biden is a child sex offender, and a 17 year old who just shot two dead is a "patriot".

Yeah, I'm sure these Woodward tapes are really going to make them see the light.

Did Trump ever enact the DPA to secure production of masks?  I know he finally did in April for ventilators.

Congratulations President Trump. It took over three years, but the left finally believes something that you said. For the first time ever, they are taking you at your word. It’s truly remarkable to see.

And let's remember we are six months into this and american's got $1,200 one time...that's it!
This really sells the CARES act short. The $600/week UI enhancement was maybe the most progressive welfare policy we’ve passed since LBJ, it’s a tragedy that we let it expire.

Democrats/media throw Fauci under the bus in 3...2...1

Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, defended President Donald Trump on Wednesday after audio recordings revealed that the president wanted to downplay the severity of the coronavirus early in the pandemic.

Speaking with Fox News’ John Roberts, Fauci denied that he ever heard the president “distort” the threat of the coronavirus and maintained that Trump’s presentations to the public were largely in line with discussions he’d had with medical experts. When asked whether he ever felt Trump was downplaying the severity of the coronavirus, Fauci said no.

“I didn’t get any sense that he was distorting anything,” Fauci said. “In my discussions with him, they were always straightforward about the concerns that we had. We related that to him. When he would go out, I’d hear him discussing the same sort of things.”

Why on earth would you agree to let Woodward release hours of audio recordings 2 months before an election? Just ridiculous.
Why would who agree? They're his recordings, it's his story and it's 100% factual. This isn't Russia where the government can say "Nyet, Comrade."

I think the question really is, why would Trump agree to the interviews in the first place. He had no obligation to taped interviews with anyone.

He puts feeding his ego first, and he's not a deep thinker. Pose something the right way (i.e. stroke Trump's ego) and he's in.

I’m sure he was just joking or being sarcastic, too bad those tapes don’t show the sarcasm in his voice 🤣

Did Trump ever enact the DPA to secure production of masks?
I believe he did but it hasn't made much of a difference on the outpatient front lines where I live and work. We're 7 months into this and we still cannot purchase N95 masks for my outpatient pediatric practice.  None of my friends and colleagues in similar practices can either.  And it's not due to a lack of trying----we attempt to do so multiple times a week.

Obviously the ER and inpatient providers caring for the sickest and hospitalized COVID patients need these masks first as their exposure to the virus is far greater.  But it's been 7 months.  If the DPA was truly effective and prioritized, we would be swimming in N95 masks by now.  This is unacceptable and pathetic.  Given the masks I am forced to use, I'm very surprised I have not yet contracted COVID 19.

The Governors were very clear they will control their states. Feds stay out.
This is not true at all. Governors were looking to the federal government for a cohesive national plan. It was only after they were told they were on their own that they started finding their own supplies. Even then, in at least one case, those supplies were co-opted by the federal government for "their own stockpile".

Correct. Some were going on TV and tweeting at him begging for a cohesive national response.

I think Fauci believes he serves the common good more by toeing the company line just enough to stay in that role than by getting himself fired by saying what he really thinks of Trump.  This should be obvious to everyone.
This.

At this point....what's the upside to telling "the truth" (if what Woodward is saying is indeed the truth)?  Anyone who would vote for Trump a week ago is going to vote for him in November.  Its not going to save any lives.

The downside is that Trump cans him on the spot and puts someone less qualified in the chair.

If he's really the best man for the job, he can best serve the country by staying in the job and doing everything he can.

On the bright side for President Trump, here’s Biden today trying to run with this. What a disaster.

Recap:

The problem is not our President's complete ineptitude, the problems are:

1. A journalist released tapes of the president! (nevermind that those tapes are of him completely contradicting his own message in the largest public health crisis in a century) and

2. Squirrel!
