The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates on Tuesday announced the six topics for the first face-to-face event scheduled for Sept. 29 in Cleveland. The topics were selected by the debate’s moderator, Fox News’ Chris Wallace, and will each be the subject of 15-minute “blocks” in the debate.

The topics are:

  • “The Trump and Biden Records”
  • “The Supreme Court”
  • ”Covid-19”
  • “The Economy”
  • “Race and Violence in our Cities”
  • “The Integrity of the Election”
The topics are subject to change because of news developments, the commission said.

Those look like good topics  - timely, and not your typical broad generic Domestic and Foreign policy issues.  Though I expect those will be topics for future debates.

These are topics that I think Trump will enjoy - generally speaking, and which Biden will have to be careful not to fall into any trap answers.

I think both camps will have downplayed expectations that both sides will declare victory if their candidate is still standing/awake at the end of the debate.

I expect Trump to make bold, but generally false, declarations defending his record, and it will be important for Biden to not getting in a pissing match on these claims.  Trump will almost certainly go with louder/bolder is better.

Biden has to show that he is still competent and can think on his feet - show that he can be the leader of ALL Americans, not just those who vote for him.

Looks like I was wrong in my stated opinion in the other debate thread that Biden would not do a debate.  I'm glad I'm wrong.

Not entirely sure what is meant by "The Trump and Biden records" but otherwise seems good to me. I feel bad for whoever has to do the closed captioning on this one. It's going to be a battle of gibberish.
I suspect that is simply time for each candidate to talk about their strengths - Trump will tout the great economy, Biden his lengthy political experience - kind of an opening gambit for each candidate.

I wasn't planning on watching til I saw Wallace was moderating.

I really wish Biden were younger, and more acerbic.

The debate would be setting up to be a must-watch train wreck.

"Hey, Donnie, I see you payed your mistress more than you paid the US government in taxes!  Good accountant, bad lawyer?"

"Hey Donnie, nice hair cut, what did that run you?  $70,000?"

"Person, Woman, Man, Camera, TV - How did I do?"

Also - anticipating Trump's response to the Tax Returns being something along the lines of "I am just smarter than everyone else"

Biden: "Every tax dollar you avoid paying is another tax dollar that Bob in Scranton has to pay, or Mary in Columbus.  Just like every time you dodged the draft, another man had to go in your place."

The bar is so low for Biden and so high for Trump.....if Biden shows up and doesn't do the Curly Shuffle on the floor....he'll come out the winner.
Correct.  Once Biden establishes the fact that he is indeed lucid, he's got nothing to win by being on the stage with that bloviating #####.  He should make whatever boring canned speeches he plans to make, ignore Trump, and get off the stage.  You don't wrestle with a pig.

hope questions are not leaked prior to debates.
That seems to be an odd request - given that everyone was given the topics that will be covered in 15-minute segments.

This isn’t a trick question show - I hope they are both prepared for the questions they both know are coming. Mouth

Not really.  The stakes are high, the lines are clearly drawn and the topics are broad plus there is a history of leaked questions.

I agree as Wallace will be the best mod of the bunch.   This should be PPV,  best event since McGregor-Mayweather. 😁

Do you think that’s a big issue with voters?

Yes. Every voter knows what they pay in taxes. And the fact that this guy pays less than, well, pretty much everyone, yes they will care. It’s bull####.
Really?.  So it’s bigger then say the economy, Heath care, education,  race relations/ violence, foreign affairs,  etc?.  Yet big techs and mfg use slave labor and pay no taxes yet it’s all good, right?

the fact that the man in charge of the country is a con man is big.  yes it is.

Wonder if Trump will be allowed to bring in his own graphs like he did for the Wallace interview?  Can Wallace ask a follow up on healthcare and ask if 2 weeks have passed yet??

So the definition of a con man is a man who tricks or cheats someone by gaining their trust and persuading them to believe something that is not true.  You can say this about every president since the beginning of time so your point is ridiculous.

Hey now, don't you remember the time George Washington had to make an out-of-court settlement with all those people that he conned at Washington University?

Or the time Abe Lincoln ripped off a children's cancer charity?

Or the time Ronald Reagan used charity donations to buy a picture of himself?

Because all presidents do that stuff, ya know.

I’m not sure if you realize but this man has been sued for fraudulent condominium developments, he created a fake scam university that was shut down, and a charitable foundation that was also shut down as fraudulent. He’s been in 5 bankruptcies and notoriously one time he bought out his own debt by taking millions in chips out of his own casino. He’s an actual scam artist.

Most of this information was out prior to last election so it proves my point that it’s a nothing burger for voters imho.  There are other issues that are much more important  and it comes across as another democratic witch hunt which is old and tiring at this point.

This is true, they were told.

- That they were told he was a fraud, and that he was susceptible to foreign influence, and they ***did not care*** has been made plain over and over and over again. I think it’s just the poor <redacted> who continually deny it who look foolish, but I think they will accept that for him as well.

I think Saints' point is valid - it may well have been a nothing burger to many voters - but the question is should they have given more consideration to the person they were electing to be President?

Hell, I've heard more complaints about Kamala Harris' qualifications to be president, than Trump.  Not only did Trump have no qualifications to be President, he had so many red flags, you would have thought he was in a May Day Parade.

But, her e-mails.

There is no such excuse this time around.

Pre-pandemic the economy was fine so nothing anyone could have done to avoid.  The 2nd talks about how the us healthcare and education has drop from 21st to 27th in the world form 1990 up to 2014 so pre- trump. The 3rd link is an opinion article from ny times which has  little to no value.
I disagree...GDP growth was crap pre-pandemic (as you can see in the charts), as was the deficit.  The stock market and unemployment was good...(possibly propped up further by the gigantic tax cuts...which did not spur the GDP growth promised).  And his handling of the pandemic had an adverse effect on the economy IMO.  I don't think the economy is that strong of a point for him.

Im sure none of it has value...do you believe healthcare in this country has gotten better during his administration?  An administration that has torn away protections from the ACA and weakened it further...and offered no alternative despite having a senate majority?  An administration that used an executive order to put window dressing on the issue of pre-existing conditions as they fought against such protections themselves?

Its already part of the law

But the administrations actions are working against that...   And there are plenty of articles and reviews of the actions of the administration when it comes to pre-existing conditions and healthcare.

I could go on...pointing out that Before COVID, the number of uninsured Americans grew by 2.3 million under Trump

Do you really think Donald Trump wants to discuss his record on healthcare without lying and making claims about how great his plan will be...a big beautiful plan?

I think when you talk about, it’s about better access for everyone especially lowered income individuals.  On that point, I agree 100% that a Biden administration will support aca more then a trump administration..

I'd like to see Biden on the record about Russiagate.  He's not really had to weigh in on it but it made a lot of Democrats look like conspiracy kooks.  I know Kamala Harris thinks the Colin Kaepernick controversy "wasn't a thing" until "the Russians started taking that on".  It was pretty moronic to center this issue for 3 years, advance a warlike mentality against Russia, and ignore kitchen table issues that actually affect people's lives.  Now everyone acts like it never happened.

100% agree.  It couldn't be set up any better for Trump.

I'm reading the order as something of importance, but, not really sure that is true.  If so, Covid comes in third place, after the SCOTUS nominations?  Slam dunk for Trump.

"Race and violence in our Cities" - home run.

"Integrity of the Election" - Trump wrote this one himself.

The yield curve was inverted last year. A recession was coming pandemic or no.

You mean he should weigh in on the FACT that Russia "hacked" the DNC and spread the information and disinformation in an attempt to affect our election process?

That isn't a conspiracy...it happened.  In addition, the Trump campaign was investigated due to many improper contacts with foreign governments and failure to disclose many of the contacts.

Only 39% of the country thinks that Trump and the republicans should fill Ginsburg's seat before the election.

The violence in our cities has happened under a Trump administration.

Trump did write the script on the integrity of the election and it is one of the most ridiculous scripts ever written

It’s an interesting situation because all the pressure is on Biden. If he delivers a coherent, steady 90 minutes, he’s probably the next President. If he fumbles, that’s the exact opening Team Trump needs to set a better narrative for the closing month.

Meanwhile, there’s no downside for Trump. He’ll lie, insult, and have no knowledge of details. And it doesn’t matter in the least.

also the economy is not great
The Census Bureau reported that real median household income grew to $68,703 in 2019, an impressive 6.8% increase over 2018. It was the largest one-year increase in median income on record going back to 1967. It was also 45 percent more growth in a single year ($4,379) than Obama/Biden produced in their entire 8 years in office ($3,021).

As was the case throughout Trump’s first three years, the economic benefits were widespread. While the overall growth rate was 6.8%, real median income grew by an even greater 7.9% for Black Americans, 7.1% for Hispanic Americans, and 10.6% for Asian Americans. All record highs as were the new income levels for each of these groups.

As for talking points about how the Trump tax cuts benefitted only the rich, well, they were false. As incomes grew in 2019, the poverty rate plummeted 1.3 percentage points to a 60 year low of 10.5%. This was the largest reduction in poverty in over 50 years. It lifted over 4.1 million people out of poverty, the largest yearly decrease since 1966. Just for comparison purposes, over the Obama/Biden era, the number of people living in poverty increased by 787,000.

Minority groups again experienced the largest improvements. While the overall poverty rate declined 1.3 percentage points, Black poverty fell by 2.0 percentage points, Hispanic poverty fell by 1.8, and Asian poverty fell by 2.8. According to the White House Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) “the poverty rate fell to an all-time record low for every race and ethnic group in 2019.”

Child poverty decreased to 14.4 percent, the lowest child poverty rate observed since 1973 and down from 18 percent at the end of the Obama/Biden era. The best family welfare program truly is a job.

Let’s take a little broader view. Over the Trump administration’s first three years, between 2016 and 2019, real median household income increased 9.2% while the economy lifted 6.6 million people out of poverty. That’s the largest 3-year poverty reduction for the  start of any presidency since the initial drop in 1964 when the War on Poverty began.

Agreed.  It's well documented on this board that I'm a fan of Fox News Sunday thanks to Wallace's ability to stay relatively unbiased.

No alternate script or polling can change the fact that 3 conservative SCOTUS will be appointed by Trump.  That's a Trump/Republican win any way you slice it, no matter who wins the upcoming election.  In fact it's probably the only thing that will matter 8 or so years from now.

But Trump!

I know, and it made the list of debate topics.  Think about that..

Wonder if Trump will be allowed to bring in his own graphs like he did for the Wallace interview?  Can Wallace ask a follow up on healthcare and ask if 2 weeks have passed yet??
It shows you how inept Trump is that he won't have a healthcare plan to discuss for the debates.

CBS News ran a video segment on on this tax return story today where they tried to spin a narrative and make this story sound like some type of Trump financial nuclear explosion.    The problem they had was they somehow invited a Tax Attorney whose IQ is around 90 points higher than the combined IQ of both of the CBS TV reporters.     I'd imagine this video segment will only remain on the internet for a few more days before either CBS or YouTube scrubs it.    The Tax Attorney does a nice job of providing expertise and the reporters simply belch out NY Times quotes or sit there overwhelmed by thoughtful answers drawn upon genuine expertise.     Watch quickly before it disappears
