QB Justin Fields, PIT (8 Viewers)

Justin Fields completed 16-of-27 passes for 174 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the Bears' 24-14, Week 6 loss to the Packers.

He rushed six times for 43 yards, which is actually his best rushing output of the season. The upside just hasn't been there for Fields. He's averaging just 140.5 passing yards per game as a starter with a 2:2 TD:INT mark and 3.75-17-0 as a runner per week. His touchdown in this one was a short hookup with Darnell Mooney. Fields had an open Allen Robinson deep earlier in the game for a would-be touchdown but was under intense pressure and couldn't make the throw. Fields is well off the fantasy radar ahead of a Week 7 date with the Bucs in Tampa Bay.

‘Stay on the same page. Communicate.’ The Chicago Bears are preparing rookie QB Justin Fields to face a high volume of blitzes against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Excerpt:

1. The Bears are preparing Justin Fields to face a high volume and wide array of pressure looks this weekend.

For a rookie quarterback, the task of solving the Buccaneers defense won’t be easy. Not only do the Bucs have one of the most formidable front sevens in the NFL, defensive coordinator Todd Bowles leans on a blitz-heavy approach to attack opposing offenses.

Fields will have to stay poised and be mentally in tune with what he’s seeing. And as Bears offensive coordinator Bill Lazor emphasized Thursday, everyone on offense will have to be sharp to account for the pressures they encounter.

Said Lazor: “You hope that everything you face, even if it’s unusual or even if it’s coming series to series in different ways, falls into the rules we first put in during training camp. … Communicate, be on the same page. As we’ve faced this (defensive) scheme with veteran quarterbacks, it’s really been the same thing.

“For Justin, it’s a great learning lesson for him. ‘Hey, this is why we install things the way we do in the offseason. This is why you have OTAs and you’re here in May and June to learn all the rules and get everyone together. Then you repeat it in training camp.’ ”

Lazor is eager to see how Fields handles the Bucs.

“Throughout the course of the season you’re going to face some teams where their blitz schemes are small amounts and you can really zero in,” Lazor said. “Then you’re going to face some times like this, where (the Buccaneers) have a wide variety (of blitzes) and you just have to stay with your rules. It’ll be good learning for him.”

Justin Fields has excelled with play-action passes this season, posting a 99 passer rating compared to a 49.7 passer rating on straight drop backs.

The problem, of course, is that Matt Nagy and the Bears have used play action on one in four Fields attempts this year. Add it to the list of grievances against Nagy. Fields has completed 65.6 percent of his passes when using play action, 11 percent higher than his non-play action throws. His yards per attempt jumps from 5.8 without play action to 7.6 with play action. The Bears' offense was as stale as ever in their Week 7 demolition against Tampa, doing nothing in the way of misdirection or creative play calling. Nagy seems content letting Fields drop back like a traditional pocket passer. Hopefully Chicago's next coach will recognize Fields' potential as a dual threat QB.

Heard an analogy this morning (not sure how FBG feels about mentioning who):

It's like buying a new stickshift ferrari and deciding not to learn how to drive stick.

Hope he'll be fine long-term but for the short term, yikes.

The look on his eyes sitting on the bench in the 4th made me sick. Why did they keep throwing him out there in the 4th when they were just getting overrun?

I watched most of Fields games at OSU.

At OSU Fields had so much time and his WRs were better than all the DBs they played against. So his reads could be slower, his WRs more open. OSUs offensive talent level was always much higher than their opponent.  Not anymore

The NFL is a different animal and that is why Fields stock dropped on draft day.  Had the Bears not traded up who knows how far he would have dropped.

Can Fields still be successful?  I think so but he is not ready at all right now.  Been better off sitting 1-2 years and learning the NFL game as are most QBs. But that is not the case anymore as we see with Zack Wilson as well.

FF wise Fields has little value this season.

I’m guessing it’s Day’s system. Haskins looked like a stud and shattered school records in that system and look at him now. Of course it didn’t hurt that he had an amazing receiver corps. But that’s kind of the point isn’t it? OSU surrounds its QB with so much talent and it’s such a QB friendly system, it’s tough to truly evaluate the position. As a Skins fan, I hope they aren’t in a position to be tempted to take Fields. Let some other team take that chance.
7 weeks in and I see nothing to make me change my opinion on this kid. Sure, Nagy isn’t doing him any favors, but he looks like he doesn’t belong out there.

Justin Fields completed 19-of-27 passes for 175 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the Bears' Week 8 loss to the 49ers.

The highlight of Fields' day was a 4th-and-1 in which he eluded numerous oncoming defenders and cut back for a gorgeous touchdown run. It's also worth mentioning that Fields' best game came without Bears coach Matt Nagy, who missed due to COVID-19 protocols. For fantasy purposes, the most notable stat is the rookie's 10 rush attempts and 103 yards. Fields could become fantasy-viable if he maintains that level of rushing volume.

Drafted him late teens and he clogged up my redraft roster for 6-7 weeks.

Naturally when I drop him for Winston, he shows out and Jameis gets hurt.

The farther away Nagy is from the offense, the better Fields does. Is there anybody (not named Nagy) that doesn't recognize Fields is held back by the coaching/system/play calling? He may be a kid that isn't good but we won't know until we see him play for a staff that at least attempts to use his abilities as the advantage they should be.

Justin Fields completed 17-of-29 passes for 291 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the Bears' 29-27, Week 9 loss to the Steelers Monday night.

He added 45 rushing yards on eight carries. This was easily Fields' best to-date game in his young career, throwing for a season-high 291 yards and taking just three sacks while averaging a crisp 10.0 yards per attempt. It was a tale of two halves for the rookie, as he went to the break with less than 100 yards before the Bears eventually fell into a 20-6 hole. Fields had an awesome fourth quarter, however, engineering a pair of touchdown drives, finishing the second off with a 16-yard touchdown strike to Darnell Mooney to give Chicago a 27-26 lead with 1:46 to play. Fields made a number of top-notch throws, particularly while rolling to his left and squaring the shoulders up. He was taking a bunch of deep shots, too, hitting Allen Robinson for a 39-yard gain late after dropping a 50-yarder into Marquise Goodwin earlier. Cole Kmet also led the team with 6-87 receiving. Fields is getting more comfortable but is still just a QB2 for fantasy ahead of a Week 11 date with the Ravens after the bye.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Justin Fields avoided broken ribs in Week 11 against the Ravens.

Fields appeared to be in serious pain after landing awkwardly at the end of a third quarter play. Rapoport said Sunday night testing showed Fields had suffered bruised -- not broken -- ribs. His status for Thanksgiving Day against Detroit is very much in question; Andy Dalton is likely to start on a short week in what could be the most depressing Thanksgiving game in league history. Fantasy managers in 12-team leagues shouldn't feel obliged to hang on to Fields, who is a last-ditch streaming option at best. He was wretched against Baltimore, completing four of 11 passes for 79 yards before leaving in the second half.

FOX's Jay Glazer reports Justin Fields (ribs) will likely return for Week 13 against the Cardinals.

Per Glazer, Fields would have been "50-50" for Week 12 had the game been on Sunday instead of Thursday. He should be good to go with 10 more days of rest. Although Fields arguably does not give the Bears their best chance to win right now, we hope they continue to go all in on his development and keep him out there even as he struggles.

Justin Fields (ribs) returned to practice on Wednesday.

Bears coach Matt Nagy noted that Andy Dalton got the starter's reps in practice. Fields suffered "a few cracked ribs," per Ian Rapoport but the injury isn't expected to sideline him for long. The fact that he didn't practice with the starters suggests that he could be out one more week though. It's also possible that he's active in Week 13 but only as an emergency option. In the four starts leading up to Fields' injury, he was averaging 57 rushing yards per game. That will be scaled back because of the rib issue but Fields would remain in the QB2 conversation if he gets the nod to face Arizona this week.

Justin Fields (ribs) is out for Week 13 against the Cardinals.

Fields got in some limited practices this week, suggesting he could be good to go for Week 14 vs. the Packers. At this point, his status is going to depend as much on Andy Dalton as his own health. If Dalton plays well against the Cardinals, Chicago figures to keep giving Fields "all the time that he needs."

Dec 5, 2021, 11:41 AM ET

Bears head coach Matt Nagy said the team is having an "ongoing discussion" about Justin Fields' rib injury and his Week 14 status.

Nagy emphasized that that team was “never going to put [Fields] at risk medically” as he recovers from a rib injury he suffered in Week 11. He's missed two games and could miss a third in Week 14 against Green Bay. Nagy said Fields' pain tolerance would be a factor in determining his status against the Packers. Fantasy manager should consider Andy Dalton the likely starter for Week 14, however bleak the prospect.

Justin Fields will start for the Bears in Week 14 against the Packers.

Andy Dalton was dreadful against the Cardinals. He managed just 229 yards on 41 attempts (5.6 yards per attempt) and tossed four interceptions. Fields hasn't played all that well this season, and shares some of Dalton's accuracy and decision-making question marks. However, Fields offers the Bears a mobile option that could open up the Bears' offense. Matt Nagy will decline that option, as he has all season, but Fields does at least provide upside as a scrambler. Fields will be a QB2 against the Packers.

Anyone seeing fantasy potential here where you would use a keeper spot or don’t hesitate to dump for a weekly fill in at this point ?

Justin Fields completed 18-of-33 passes for 224 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in Chicago's Week 14 loss to the Packers.

Fields also lost a fumble on a sack where he didn’t feel the pressure. He finished as Chicago's leading rusher, going for 74 yards on nine carries, but there were a lot of negatives in his first start since Week 11. Fields missed open throws when he had time, failed to convert on two red-zone chances, and one of his interceptions was pick-sixed on a floater to the edge. This still qualified as one of Fields' better games and his first multi-touchdown game of the season. Fields' rushing floor keeps him in the streaming mix should he remain the starter in Week 15.

Dec 12, 2021, 11:59 PM ET

He makes some really poor decisions that lead to TOs or massive loss of yardage. Second and twenty-something then puts more pressure on him to make up for those mistakes. He's looked better than last night this season but he shouldn't have been that bad at home vs an exploitable defense.

Justin Fields completed 26-of-39 passes for 285 yards and one touchdown in the Bears' 17-9, Week 15 loss to the Vikings Monday night.

With play-caller OC Bill Lazor out with COVID, coach Matt Nagy took over play-calling duties and guided his Bears offense to three points before a completely meaningless 19-yard Jesper Horsted touchdown catch from Fields as time expired. An extra point wasn't even attempted. Nagy's simply coaching out the string of the season and will certainly be fired on Black Monday, if not sooner. His offense is completely stale, and he isn't adjusting his scheme to Fields at all. Fields wasn't dialed up on any designed runs against Minnesota, and he took three long sacks to put the Bears in unmanageable down-and-distance situations throughout this one with bad decisions. He ended up finishing with 35 rushing yards on seven scrambles. Fields will be a low-floor, upside QB2 next week in Seattle.

Dec 20, 2021, 11:22 PM ET

No designed runs specifically but there were a good number of RPOs where he kept and scrambled for better or (usually) worse.

Justin Fields was limited in Wednesday's practice with an ankle injury.

Andy Dalton remains on the reserve/COVID-19 list so Nick Foles should be getting some extra reps in practice. Still, a limited session this early in the week usually means a player will play without any issues on Sunday. The Bears face the downtrodden Seahawks this week. If healthy, Fields will have a shot at QB1 numbers via his rushing production. The rookie is averaging 7.6 carries for 56 yards over his past five starts. Even if his passing production and decision-making have been lacking, he remains a solid fantasy option this week.

Dec 22, 2021, 12:58 PM ET

Justin Fields (ankle) did not practice on Thursday.

It's actually a downgrade from Wednesday's practice, when Fields was limited. With Andy Dalton activated off the COVID-19 list, Fields' chances of seeing the field against the Seahawks on Sunday are all of the sudden looking quite questionable. This will be one to monitor on Friday. Fields would be in the back of the QB2 conversation if he's able to play.

Dec 23, 2021, 4:58 PM ET

And to boot, add in the fact that the current weather forecast for the Sun afternoon game at Seattle is:
     32 degrees
~50% chance of snow for the entire game
   ~6 mph wind

I was already wondering how Fields would perform in the snow............but now with the ankle, I'm starting to feel uneasy about him as my Qb2/Superflex.
anyone else?

ESPN's Jesse Rogers suggested more run-pass options could "be in order" as part of the Bears' efforts to maximize Justin Fields' strengths.

Rogers said the team's offensive strength is in the backfield, with the blazing fast Fields and productive David Montgomery creating a potentially dangerous duo. Fields' disastrous rookie season included a designed run on a meager 10.5 percent of his snaps, a lower rate than Trevor Lawrence. New Bears head coach Matt Eberflus has said play-action would be central to Chicago's offense in 2022. An offense predicated on ball fakes could keep defenses off guard against the dangerous Fields.

The Athletic's Kevin Fishbain reports league sources pointed to Justin Fields' "elongated" throwing motion as a long-term concern.

Fishbain said "several league contacts pointed to Fields’ mechanics, specifically his elongated throwing motion" as something the team's new coaching staff would need to address in 2022. Fields' throwing motion was an oft-discussed topic in the lead up to the 2021 NFL Draft. “He can be good,” a league source added. “But there are obviously some things that need to be fixed. … How long will that take?” Fishbain said there's been confusion about why Chicago hired Andrew Janocko as its quarterback coach after Janocko spent just one year as the Vikings' QBs coach. Improving Fields' throwing motion will be a top priority for Janocko and the Bears after Fields proved erratic throughout his rookie campaign. He was 38th in adjusted completion rate in 2021, below Carson Wentz and Zach Wilson and just above Mike Glennon, per Pro Football Focus.

The Athletic's Kevin Fishbain believes the Bears "might have to consider the possibility that [Justin Fields] isn’t the guy" if he struggles in 2022.

The team's new regime should have a good idea of Fields' long-term potential after the 2022 season, Fishbain said. "Fields’ rookie performance comes with a lot of disclaimers, and some are legitimate, but the struggles can’t be fully ignored," Fishbain said. "If the sack numbers remain high, if he’s not doing a good job taking care of the football, and if he’s not leading scoring drives often enough, then the organization might have to consider the possibility that he isn’t the guy." Fields in 2021 struggled mightily in Matt Nagy's inflexible, uncreative offense, ranking 37th in adjusted completion rate -- just ahead of Mike Glennon -- and 22nd in yards per attempt. Fields' expected points added (EPA) per drop back was lower than any quarterback besides Zach Wilson. His best-case scenario would be a Bears offense that better utilizes his strengths. A bad 2022 could have the Bears itching for a new QB option, however premature.

Great post. I hope folks will click the link and thumb up the post on Youtube as well as here. We need more content like this on BOTH sites. Thanks again.

It would be interesting to hear how some of the well known draft experts would have graded Fields as a prospect in this draft crop of QB.
Speaking as a draftnik and as a Bears fan, I'm happy with Fields. I think he performed as expected as a rookie, and I think he's a better prospect than any QB in the 2022 draft. I'm also happy with the trade to get him, even though it ended up costing the #7 pick.

Watching that video, it really stands out how little help Fields had last season, and is a little scary considering they haven't upgraded anywhere, and on paper look worse at WR and OL, after losing Robinson and Daniels. I'd love to see them sign a veteran WR and draft a guy in round 2. Something like Fuller/Skyy or Landry/Pickens. Right now its just Mooney and a good backfield.

If Fields is to break out fantasy wise, I'd say it will almost certainly be because he runs a bunch.
