Pip's Invitation 7,607
For my first Oh Canada pick, I am taking what is probably the most Canadian of Neil's originals. It's a rare autobiographical song about the lessons learned from growing up in Winnipeg. Round 213: Oh Canada Don't Be Denied -- Neil Young

krista4 25,779
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GEORGE HARRISON!!! 🍰 George would have turned 78 today. My selections today will be in George's honor. 213.k4 Randy Bachman - You Like Me Too Much (Oh Canada) Bachman put out a full record of George Harrison covers entitled "By George By Bachman." Some of them work; a lot of them don't. This one and "Don't Bother Me" are the best, in my opinion. I like the guitar work here. Randy and his son Tal (whose one and only hit has been chosen in this very draft) have been hosting a new show on the Beatles Channel, and I think it surprisingly good. They drill deeply into the musical elements of the songs - chord changes, etc. I heard a show they did that was just focused on the middle eights. Good stuff.
rockaction 26,163
Round 213.xx Category: Oh Canada Song: Bishy-Bishy! Band: The Smugglers Away from the bright lights of our Toronto-loving contingent comes this band from the Pacific Northwest. Straight out of Vancouver, B.C., here's The Smugglers! I've seen these guys live. Recordings don't do their brand of suit-wearing, nattily-coiffed punk rock any justice. They're as nonsensical and as bouncy as the title sounds, too, with live stage choreography and everything. There will generally be a guitar soloing during the pauses/breakdowns in most of their songs from this five-piece, serving a rhythm function also. Cool stuff. Glad they have this on Spotify. They used to very much not. Well it's pathetic...yeah yeah yeah Well it's disgusting...woah woah woah Well it's just for you and me... (60s on 6) As part of my continuing tribute today to George Harrison, I'm selecting the first song with a George vocal to reach the top 10, peaking at #2. This is famously the song that John said they gave to George because "it only had three notes," since George hadn't developed his singing ability so much at the time. I think George does a lovely job with it, sounding sly and even a little sexy.

rockaction 26,163
Round 214.xx Category: Stevie Wonder Radio Song: I Don't Know Why (AKA Don't Know Why I Love You) Artist: The Rolling Stones I don't why I'd pick a cover version of an artist that needs no covers done by the Stones, but this sort of jumped out at me in the covers thread of Stevie Wonder over at the Steve Hoffman boards. It's well done.

At the very least, someone should be paying royalties to Eephus. I thought similarly. I thought we might lose Eephus to that thread. I can just see him, hands up on the glass, face pressed flush, looking at the dice like he's mesmerized.

It took me no less than being in and out of the thread for five hours to pick a song today that I felt was appropriate. I'd asked for an extension of Shade/Fly/Heat, so I felt responsible to pick a song. But I've exhausted my Shade picks here and in other places, so I figured I'd pick someone I hadn't before but that I liked. But then the I song I had then chosen for it is just objectionable to me in spirit, so I couldn't. Then there's "Do I pick a cover for Stevie given all the attendant issues?" Then there's a few bands from Canada, but they've been chosen... So I had a lot to think about. Lots on the plate. I'm happy I just said "screw it," and picked what tickled my ear and soul. Orienteering - Canada You're taken by the woods even though you're aware Of the slippery cliffs and the big black bears And the salal snares, taller than yourself Ferns growing as thick as the trees, yeah You're looking for a flag at the top of the hill Its a race against the light One false step could mean staying the night, yeah That's why you should never travel alone No, you should never You should never travel alone And you know that 'Cause just one false step and you might not make it home

I remember way back in like 2015 or 2016 when you took us on a Canadian tour. Within the context of a whole different set of parameters. That was something else.
