Genrepalooza Presents: FG Radio - Tons of Lithium but very little Chill (3 Viewers)

@Eephus Proposal for Dayton category:

Songs on the Barbie (artists from Australia and New Zealand)
This is already in Dayton under the name The Antipodes channel

ETA:  I added Saxy Time and Tripping Ball channels.

ETA2:  Programming change.  Jack & Dave's AM drive time ratings have tanked due to their extended stay in Dayton.  I've added

The Morning Zoo (Songs about animals)

and rebranded

The Untitled Jack & Dave Show

I’m feeling like my PM Eel Pie pick needs to be 2 songs to fully capture the discourse between the bands
I was absolutely going to do that this morning and then felt it was verboten and that I'd almost already done that with punk and another category. But fortune favors the bold.

Bumping this to the new page. Now including Eel Pie Preservation Society and Rolling Stones Radio.

Round 218.xx

Category: Eel Pie Preservation Society

Song: Jaguar/Coke After Coke

Artist: The Who

This is one I've drafted before, but as long as people are listening to the mixes, I'll throw in this completely underrated gem from The Who Sell Out off of the deluxe edition. Not on the original album, Jaguar is, to me, the perfect culmination of what The Who were going for on the album -- an outright Who song that served a double commercial function, blurring the lines so badly between art and commerce that one didn't know when the art began and ended and where the commercial was kicking in. It is a metaphor for the pirate radio around at the time, and is brilliant in its execution, rockin' to the fullest, and leads into another commercial (the "Coke After Coke" song). There is, coincidentally, a new deluxe re-issue of The Who Sell Out coming out very soon. I think I'll be on that.

EPPS

So in '64 The Who changed their name and tried to fully embrace the mod movement

Rd  218A: Zoot Suit by The High Numbers

I'm the hippiest number in town and I'll tell you why
I'm the snappiest dresser right down to my inch wide tie
And to get you wise I'll explain it to you
A few of the things that a face is supposed to do.

I wear zoot suit jacket with side vents five inches long
I have two-tone brogues yeah you know this is wrong.
But the main thing is unless you're a fool
Ah you know you gotta know, yeah you know, yeah you gotta be cool.

In '66 The Kinks commented on the whole London fashion Mod movement very clearly

Rd 218B: Dedicated Follower of Fashion by The Kinks

They seek him here
They seek him there
His clothes are loud
But never square
It will make or break him so he's got to buy the best
'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion

And when he does his little rounds
'Round the boutiques of London town
Eagerly pursuing all the latest fads and trends
'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion

Was a really nice spring like day here in SE Michigan. Spent the day in Ann Arbor drinking...hopefully there is some action here or else I may fall asleep by 9:00.

I’m actually excited for the Eel mix, Kinks and Who were two of my bands when I was younger but I played them so much that I got a big burnt out. I’m feeling some excitement to jump back into an eclectic mix.
A dedicated channel for the Who and the Kinks will take a bunch of songs off the board for the Concept Concept Channel if it ever gets rolled.

True, they were two of the real leaders in the concept album. That's actually a category that I not too much is jumping to mind outside of the obvious Who, Kinks and Beatles options. I feel like sometimes I am oblivious to the intended concept bands were going for.

I'm often surprised to find out an album is a concept album.

Was working out in our garage today (the only productive thing we did last year was turn half our garage into a home gym), and totally rocking’ out getting ready for my boneyard picks tomorrow.

:headbang:  💪  :headbang:
I went down a deep rabbit hole listening to songs from that one band with the lead singer that got kicked out of that other band that was more famous.  I am amazed every time I listen to these albums, the way they construct songs, and the kick ### guitar solos.

That specific and vague enough?

I'm 99.42% sure I know what you're talking about.

Just got me also pondering about the "big 4" from the 80s and why one stood out that much more than the others as far as mainstream popularity.    I think that applied to Metallica even before Black album and they morphed their sound a bit (which the other 3 never really did).

That had pretty much everything to do with it IMO.

I can't really say. I don't know who the other big 2 are (only know the M bands) and only knew of Metallica post Black album

That had pretty much everything to do with it IMO.
Weren't they pretty big before that, or was it basically the combo of the One video + Black album?

I was a metal guy, so I might just be over thinking this.     I think of the 4, Anthrax was by far the least talented.   Slayer was too dark, and remember my parents getting pissed about their album covers.   I think in the end its probably just that Metallica morphed enough to vault them up so much.

Anthrax, Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth are usually what people refer to as the bigs from the era, but more on the thrash side i guess.
I really liked Metallica and had all of their albums on tape. I had a Megadeath tape or CD as well. Never got into Anthrax or Slayer.

I'm at the beach again.  I seem to spend a lot of time here for someone who doesn't like water.  We had a cool beachy winter storm last night, and then today has been sunny and lovely.  So relaxing.  I'm with two friends, and basically we just eat and drink, get in the hot tub, eat and drink, walk on the beach, eat and drink, etc.

Sounds fun! You'll be happy to know you did not make any drunken picks in here last night.

I listened to the movie instrumentals mix while walking Louis at dusk. It's impossible not to get a little spring in your step when the 007 theme comes on. Turning the corner to Lawrence of Arabia music fills me with wonder even when I've walked the block thousands of times.

But @pitchfork, there's a song with words on it.
