Genrepalooza Presents: FG Radio - Tons of Lithium but very little Chill

Just now, KarmaPolice said:

That's what I was assuming, thanks.  I liked the songs, just was curious.

I also loved the Cat Power song on there too.

Yeah, I selected an Otis and and Aretha song, and then as a bonus three others that used samples, were inspired by, or were covers of theirs. So there are three for Otis, five for Aretha on the mix, I think. Dillinger Four's Otis homage was removed by ilov because it was so anathema to the mix, which I agree with.

But thanks for liking them. Sounds like an interesting mix. I'll have to listen to it.

Round 304:

A. Hall of Very Good

See a Little Light -- Bob Mould

Between his output with Husker Du and Sugar and as a solo artist, Mould has exerted great influence on the punk/alternative/indie scene. But the hippies on the voting committee don't really care about such things. This is probably the best-known song of his solo career. It's from his first solo album, the mostly acoustic Workbook.

B. Free Stylin'

Walk This Way -- Run-D.M.C. ft. Aerosmith

You can't tell the story of '80s rap without this track. It broadened the audience for it.

Seriously? Oh, Classic Rewind. Good pick, RA. Good answer! That definitely was a cassette tape song that got played on classic rock radio. Huh.

Least it got played on our independent classic rock station, WCCC 106.9.

Clarification on Hall of Very Good:  would this include someone who was inducted as part of a band but not inducted on his extremely qualified solo resume?

I think so.  I have seen things where they talk about solo snubs for people that are in as a band or a duo, but not on their own.

I certainly think someone induced as a writer but not a performer despite being qualified for that would count*, and I don't think your scenario is much different.

* - yes, I had someone specific in mind when I wrote that

303.k4  Brian Eno - Needles in the Camel's Eye  (Hall of Very Good)

Oh yeah, that's a no brainer. When you add in his accomplishments as a producer, it's ridiculous that he's only in as part of a band he left after two albums.

I'll be interested to see how you get the Fab Four on this playlist. There's only one straightforward way to do it.

I'm in a similar boat with Neil. There are a couple of technicalities I could use but it would seem like cheating. Might have to go with a cover by or a guest appearance with someone who's deserving but isn't in yet.

I take up your challenge with a bonus pick.

BONUS.k4  Billy Preston - Nothing From Nothing  (Hall of Very Good)

Primary Fifth Beatle and contributor to many George projects, too.  Might have single-handedly kept the Beatles together for an extra year or two.  John proposed to make him a permanent member of the band.  Only non-Beatle with a writing credit on a Beatles song.

Played with Mahalia Jackson and Little Richard and others when he was still a child.

Nominated for nine Grammys and won two.  18 top 100 singles in the US, including three that hit #1.

Co-wrote "You Are So Beautiful" with the abominable Joe Cocker.

Miles Davis wrote a song about him.

Legitimately nice guy.  Played that #### as well as anyone ever.  The gods touched him.  Plus, a righteous afro.

English record label doing ska and Jamaican pop music in the sixties. Genericide happened (meaning its brand name became a name for the generalized style, like you ask for a xerox copy of something). Indeed, one of my favorite artists did a ton of bluebeat.

How do we distinguish Rude Youth from The Joint?  Sorry if it’s obvious, but I don’t want to mess up.

Hoo boy. That's one of those things where you know it if you hear it. Like Eephus alluded to, ska tends to be released as singles rather than albums. Ska is also faster and peppier than reggae.

This is a really good basic primer, though it's light on music theory.

Ska primer:

I am no expert in ska, I just dabble, in case anyone is wondering. One of my favorite artists, as I mentioned before, is a Blue Beat guy.

@Raging weasel - you haven't taken the 2 bands I thought you would be on for the Hall of Very Good.

Round 304

Hall of Very Good

I underestimated my edibles today and zoned out watching the Masters. Also took about 4 hours to knock out my 2 hours of chores.

I've drafted the other band a bunch so far but not much of these guys.

Iron Maiden- Revelations
