Genrepalooza Presents: FG Radio - Tons of Lithium but very little Chill (3 Viewers)

Alright, a little vent here because Mrs. NV is in bed and I want to get this off my chest.

The guy who hired me at the job I was at for 6.5 years until recently was out on his bike a couple nights ago and got hit by a truck, he's in a Toronto hospital with a broken back and internal bleeding.

He's the most inspiring person I've ever worked for, maybe I've ever known. He hired me but aside from a couple brief terms after the omnipresent "restructuring" I never directly reported to him, he was a couple rungs higher. But he made you want to work and be your best. He was let go by the company about 9 months ago, which was ridiculous, he should have been the guy they targeted as a future president. In hindsight, writing was probably on the wall for me as soon as he left.

We became friends outside of work through a love of OHL/junior hockey - he'd come to Peterborough (~45 minute drive for him) almost weekly to watch the Petes and we'd grab a beer at intermission - he was usually there with his daughter or girlfriend and I go with my mom and a buddy.

In terms of being on the bike, he did an ironman triathlon three years ago, and a few before that. Twice since I've known him, he's done a ride across Canada in support of childhood cancer, so he's avid and very experienced. I am/was in the process of interviewing with the company he works for now, with a lot of pushing from him on the back end but that really isn't what I'm concerned with now, just really sucked to get that message tonight.
Ugh, sorry to read that, NV.   Positive thoughts your way, and hoping your friend pulls through.

It may be because I have a very specific, very fond memory of watching this band with their stage set up full of neon palm trees and inflatable pool toys at like 2:30 in the afternoon at a summer music festival in the blistering heat from beside the Bacardi tent that was offering up free rum and lemonades... but not many songs scream summer to me as much as this one.

Fusion

Most of the songs on the list so far have been some pretty heavy rock jazz fusion so this is a bit lighter and an easier listen as the jazz influence is a light touch, the rock side is stronger

Rd 311 My Old School by Steely Dan

Rd 312 Eat that Question by Frank Zappa
Can I give this half a like?  For whatever reason, that Steely Dan song grates on me like no other.  And rest assured, all of Steely Dan grates on me.  But I want to "like" the Zappa.  :)

@simey, I don't know why it came to her today, but I must have mentioned to my mom how I had a friend who was interested in the blue cheese fondue, so she sent me this today for my friend.  By the way, no wonder it tasted creamy and not much like blue cheese!  And to think I thought she'd worked away for hours on this one.

Blue Cheese Fondue Recipe

8 oz. milk

8 oz. cream cheese

8 oz. Stilton or other blue cheese, grated

3 tsp cornstarch

2 tbsp cream

Put the milk and cream cheese in the fondue pot and, using a whisk, beat until creamy.  Put over gentle heat and gradually stir in blue cheese.  Continue to heat, stirring constantly to make a good mixture.

Blend the cornstarch with the cream in a small bowl.  Stir into the cheese mixture and cook another 2-3 minutes until thick and creamy.  Goes well with crusty bread and celery sticks – or anything you like, really.

Bonus

Shock Me (Live) - KISS (Guitar Hero)
This was my favorite song back when I was five or so. No lie. Kiss Alive II was the album of choice. Ace was guitarist par excellence.

Shock me/make me feel better/Shock me/put on your black leather

I love the guitars in this song. I love the intro, the midtro, and the outro.

Round 312

The Needle and The Spoon - Lynyrd Skynyrd  (Guitar Hero)
Sick song. Don't mess with the needle and the spoon/take a trip now to the moon/take me away...

From a Hair Nation band that couldn't make the cut because they're little remembered and not on Spotify.

Law And Order

My arteries just cried out in protest from reading this. Oh my.

The guitar is indeed great and Neil-like.

Then I went to Wikipedia and learned that the drummer was killed in 2005 when his car was hit by someone who was trying to commit suicide.  :(
Yes, Michael Dahlquist (I might have spelled wrong).  Was a good buddy of ex-Mr. k, and just a tragic and somewhat infuriating story.  Killed three people.

Can I give this half a like?  For whatever reason, that Steely Dan song grates on me like no other.  And rest assured, all of Steely Dan grates on me.  But I want to "like" the Zappa.  :)
I am not a big Steely Dan fan but Old School is one of their songs I really like.

I love the categories AGAIN so I'm doing ilov80s style AGAIN. Plus it's Friday.

Round 313:

A. Saxy Time

I was struggling with where I could put this amazing cover. Then as I was listening to it again this week, I realized, duh, there's an extended sax solo by Andy MacKay in the middle of it.

Like a Hurricane (live) -- Roxy Music

B. All About That Bass

As I mentioned when we were doing Lithium (and when we did the jukebox draft), Failure's Fantastic Planet is one of my favorite albums of the '90s. This song has a towering, thunderous bass part.

Heliotropic -- Failure

Frontman Ken Andrews and writing partner Greg Edwards traded off guitar and bass duties. Andrews played the bass on this track.

Looking at the Bass channel - I was a bit surprised that there were 2 Muse songs in there.  Not that I disagree, just thought they weren't well liked around these parts.

Thank you, and thanks to your mother!

Andy makes a guest appearance on this tune. His sax solo near the end of the song begins normal, and then sounds like someone polishing a window. 😃

Round 313

All The Way To Memphis - Mott The Hoople  (Saxy Time)

I was listening to guitar hero playlist (very good) and I remember not being happy with my Pink Floyd (Gilmour) choice of "Run Like Hell" because it's not really guitar driven but when I tried to change it that night I picked 2 or 3 songs already taken and got frustrated so just stuck with RLH.

Anyway I just removed RLH and replaced it with Have A Cigar  for the sake of the playlist. Hope that's ok - it's been bothering me for a while.

Uh... I think I took that one for RRHOF.

Six more weeks of stay home and lock down being announced here today. Our provincial government is completely useless. This is the 4th "lockdown" but there hasn't been a real one yet with half the province being declared essential. They are banning camping, tennis, golf, basketball etc... with this one while continuing to leave construction sites and all manufacturing open. Still no paid time off available (there is a federal program but it's an apply and get later situation, which the true working poor can't do).

There is some/a lot of blame federally in not getting enough vaccines and we're hampered huge by not making them in Canada but other provinces are doing significantly better in terms of rolling them out and getting them in people's arms. We regularly have a million left at the end of the week because the logistics are so bad and Moderna keeps delaying shipments. Pfizer keeps increasing orders but not enough to meet demand, meanwhile there is surplus AstraZeneca from people vaccine shopping. It's only being offered to people 55+ but not enough of them want ### to fill the slots - I would take one tomorrow if they would open it up to larger populations/start a waiting list.

So frustrating. Anyway, I just opened a beer and we're ordering pizza tonight. Could be the long awaited return of ITALICS LYRICS later on

Also the announcement of these new restrictions hasn't actually been made yet - it's been delayed from 2 until 4 and now 4:45.

What's that cliche about dumping bad news on a Friday afternoon...?
