SURF SHOP

340.YM -  Surf Wax America - Weezer

The sea is foamin' like a bottle of beer
The wave is comin but I ain't gonna fear
I'm waxin' down so that I'll go real fast
I'm waxin' down because it's really a blast
I'm goin' surfin 'cause I don't like your face
I'm bailin' out because I hate the race
Of rats that run round and round in the maze
I'm goin' surfin', I'm goin' surfin'

Round 341

Hall of Very Good

Can't skip past these guys any longer. Judas Priest set the standard for what alot of metal bands did that followed. From fashion (started the leather and chains look), to sound(duel lead guitarists)(soaring vocals). Figured I'd get banned from drafting if I took this for Velvet so putting it here. One of the greatest metal vocal performances ever and a game changer for the genre.

Judas Priest- Victim of Changes

Steroid regimen commencing.

Goin' Solo

341.A New Frontier -- Donald Fagen

I would put The Nightfly up against any late-period Steely Dan album except Aja.

341.B Up or Down -- Ken Andrews

After Failure's breakup in 1997, its frontman mostly concentrated on production work, releasing two albums under a pseudonym and starting another short-lived band in the early '00s. In 2007 he finally put out an album under his own name. This is my favorite track from it.

Hall of the Very Good

341.C Persuasion -- Richard Thompson

Despite stellar work since the late '60s with Fairport Convention, as a duo with wife Linda and as a solo artist, Thompson is not in. Given the quality of his work both acoustic and electric, his songwriting ability and his guitar prowess, he may be the closest thing the Brits have to a Neil. 😲 This is one of my favorites of his; it initially appeared on the soundtrack of the Australian film Sweet Talker.

341.D Free -- Phish

They may not be everyone's cup of tea, but to reach the level they have for as many years as they have with almost zero support from the industry deserves enshrinement. Their growth in the '80s and early '90s was completely organic, as the industry had no interest in their kind of music and they built a following on word-of-mouth reputation. They are also deserving because they are one of the best live acts in rock history. This was the single from their most accessible album, Billy Breathes.

341.8 or 12 - John Doe - The Golden State  (Goin' Solo)

A beautiful song from the past, present and future X member and all around cool dude.

I'm going for the original version featuring Kathleen Edwards.  There's also a version with Eddie Vedder and Corin Tucker that has twice as many streams but is only half as good.

Round 341 - Geology 101

The Ramones - Rock N' Roll High School

@Eephus made us watch this during one of our family nights and I've been a Ramones fan ever since

Round 341 - Geology 101 (BONUS)

Shop Boyz - Party Like A Rockstar

I still remember hearing this at a pep rally my freshman year of high school. The teacher who approved the songs didn't listen to it in its entirety, and the nun running the sound system almost had a heart attack (sorry Sister Francis)!

Steroid regimen continuing.

Geology 101

342.A For Those About to Rock, We Salute You -- AC/DC

342.B Rock the Boat -- Hues Corporation

Two songs that should have been drafted by now.

Radio Omega

342.C The Match -- Tsunami

I told the story of their final album, A Brilliant Mistake, when I took a song from it in the jukebox draft. Here's something else from it.

342.D Still Not Satisfied -- Ambrosia

Ambrosia produced two albums of eclectic, at times proggy material, followed by two albums of (mostly) yacht rock. In 1982, by the time it came to record their fifth album, Road Island, which turned out to be their final one, yacht rock was out of fashion and the band needed a new direction. They hooked up with James Guthrie. who had co-produced The Wall, and came up with something that's best described as a cross between late-era Floyd and Escape-era Journey. The songs turned out great, but the album failed commercially and the band broke up shortly after touring for it. This is one of the hard rockers from the record.

I took the Geology playlist on a couple of shuffles today. It's another good walking mix since it expectedly leans to the rockin' side. Thankfully most of the songs have "rock" in the chorus so I get two or three shots at making the connection.

Cherub Rock doesn't have "rock" in the lyrics but it still makes me want to jump up onto a park bench and play air guitar along with Billy. The Mogwai instrumental was a cheeky selection.

I am enjoying a nice BA beer right now
🍻 I've had a couple IPAs and I have a few more up here but I'm trying to ration because I just found out my brother is coming here tomorrow and he'll likely want to share a couple.

I know I've mentioned my friends brewery in here a few times, Mrs. NV and I made an investment in it, not a huge stake but it's pretty cool to be part of it now.

My first order of business was to try to push the June seasonal sour away from guava.  I pushed tangerine, lemonade/pink lemonade or dragonfruit, we'll see what wins (it will be guava, main dude is still majority owner by a large amount and seems locked in on it).

Nice, what are the IPAs like? East or West coast? More citrus or more pine?
