Genrepalooza Presents: FG Radio - Tons of Lithium but very little Chill (4 Viewers)

BONUS FUSION BEFORE IT GOES FISSION

I'll take it up to 25 songs.

Flame-Sky -- Santana ft. John McLaughlin

The Welcome album came during the peak of Carlos' fusion phase. It's all over the place, but this track is absolute fire.

High Falls -- The Allman Brothers Band

If we can have early Steely Dan on the playlist, then we can have this, the most jazz-oriented of Dickey Betts' instrumentals.

Miles Runs the Voodoo Down -- Miles Davis

The #####es Brew album is what brought jazz-rock fusion to the masses, so we should have something from it.

Bumping this to the new page. Now including This Is the End.

I don't think I'm ready to do the concert thing again, but Wilco and Sleater-Kinney are touring together in August.

ETA: Looks like Phish will be out this summer as well.

little confession. the 80s station was, for me, a little too much deep cuts and not enough "light chalk" at least. i don't pine for chalkity chalk chalk. it's played and boring, but when y'all picked some not so deep cuts, that maybe charted but not top 25, the reminiscing was fun. title tracks sort of forces that. so would "shallow grave", not so deep. opening up either from 60s to date could end up weirdly random. not sure if that is good or bad, and i am just rambling, and clearly more peanut gallery than participant, so.
I wouldn't have guessed Shawn Lane if you gave me ten thousand chances although I would have given up long before then.

Triple nice here for me. A story that always amused me about this period with "Carlos". John introduced him to the Mahavishnu guru and after a few spiritual sessions the guru dubbed Carlos, Devadip. For a few years he insisted on being called Devadip, It is even on the fusion era album covers, all but Lotus. I've listened to triple album live from Osaka, Lotus, all the way through a couple times recently. The fusion revisions of his hits are some of my favorite Santana. If ever the chance to see him live come... as essential as Petty was.

I wish Spotify would put all of his stuff on there.
I've zipped my lip best as I can, but every song I have wanted to share, yes, every single one... since i said i would stop complaining, has not been on spotify. Prior to that it was running about 33%.

On Cinco De Mayo, when Eeph made a clever applicable pick, it jogged a memory. I zoomed to Spotty to show off my own Cinco de Mayo tune for the csny station. Pfff...

So as an ineligible pick, this is a great Stills solo number. Maybe my favorite thing he has done alone. Kinda a Suite Judy format, but cinco de mayo-ed.

that's herbie on the outro...

I have Lotus, it's amazing. Got it in college in the early '90s when it was first made available in the US -- before that you could only get it as a Japanese import.

My one Santana show was in 1995; my friend took his wedding party to it the day before he got married. Jeff Beck was also on the bill.

Yep, this is the one I mentioned where the rest of the album is on Spotify but that track isn't. I would have selected it for Jazz-Rock Fusion for the surprise element.

I wouldn't have guessed Shawn Lane if you gave me ten thousand chances although I would have given up long before then.
I'm pretty sure this is the guy who ran the homage site and probably pulled a bunch of bootlegs off of youtube. It's an hour of Shawn at age 18-19 making music in a home studio, and it's a great listen. There's even something fishy going on on spotify. You can see all the tracks that have been disabled.

What he may have done with current home studio tech... ah well.

Maybe in the Hellborg interview I linked or maybe another, he talks about something they had in common. No desire for fame and fortune, much happier if their music could just support a middle class lifestyle while letting them explore what really intrigued them. They both taught music to kids on the side. Most of what little success they had was touring India, a little in western Europe, mostly Italy where Jonas lives.

Digging in a bit for that write-up has me more intrigued than ever to know more of the story.

Some artists have say on what is shared, and some record labels have say on what is shared, etc. In the case of Ray Charles, he recorded for different labels. I'm not sure who controls his material. Some of his stuff that was on there isn't anymore, and some that wasn't is, and some never has been.

365.8 or 12 - The Stone Roses - I Am The Resurrection   (This is the End)

Another band the hasn't been drafted yet.  This song's instrumental ending is more than half the length of the song. The guitar jam on top of the funky beat laid down by Mani and Reni which eventually reduces to the chord pattern from the original melody and floats away.
the opening is slowed down "Mystery Achievement" to a tee ... this is a remarkable piece of work.

I'm going to hop back in on this new category, but the reaaalllly obvious Beatles endings have been taken in other categories.  Entire books have been written about the ending of A Day in the Life, and of course Strawberry Fields Forever, Helter Skelter and I Want You (She's So Heavy) would have been great choices, too.  Harrumph.

365.k4  Paul McCartney and Wings - Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five  (the category about endings)

Not bad for a backup plan.  From my initial write-up:  "The ending, which forms the finale of the album Band On The Run, is phenomenal, starting with a big guitar solo that is then accompanied by a driving drum part and then that huge orchestral arrangement, which gets stronger and more tumultuous until it's nearly overwhelming and then BAM, it stops and is followed by that little "Band On The Run" reprise to harken back to the first song of the album.  Shake it don't break it!"
