Job interview next week

My mom is finally home!  They think the cancer had only spread to two lymph nodes (which they removed), so it is good news so far!  Full pathology report will come out next week.

Maurice Chevalier - You Brought a New Kind of Love to Me  (from 1930)

Zeppo: Hey, do you know who's on this boat? Maurice Chevalier the movie actor. I just ran into him.

Groucho: Did you hurt him?

Chico: How do you know it was Chevalier?

Zeppo: I got his passport. Right there.

Groucho: Now, he can't get off the boat.

Chico: [Pointing to Harpo] Hey, he looks like Chevalier. I can look like Chevalier.

Groucho: I certainly look like Chevalier.

Zeppo: But, that's not enough. You gotta sing one of Chevalier's songs to get off this boat.

[singing]

Zeppo: "If a nightingale, could sing like you, they'd sing much better than you do..."

Groucho: Outstanding. You sing like that and they'll throw us all off the boat.

That never gets old!!

373.k4  John Lennon and Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band - Jealous Guy  (Keyboard Warrior)

This category will understandably be dominated by the Elton Johns and Jerry Lee Lewises, but as a piano player I also love the (sometimes) more subtle performances of people like Nicky Hopkins.  This is one of his best, IMO, as that gentle, gospel-inflected sound forms the emotional core of the song.  Yoko Ono has said, "Nicky Hopkins’ playing on ‘Jealous Guy’ is so melodic and beautiful that it still makes everyone cry, even now."

I reserve the right to move this if we end up with a whistling channel, since it also features the most poignant whistling I've ever heard.

What did Harpo have to say?

Oh...

373.8 or 12 - The J. Geils Band - Whammer Jammer  (Harmonicapalooza)

Magic Dick on the harp

All four categories appeared in the first six picks today, in contrast to yesterday, where the first squillion picks were for This Is the Beginning.

Like it or not, there's gonna be some prog and pseudo-prog on this channel.

Keyboard Warriors

373.PIP The Cinema Show -- Genesis

Firth of Fifth is probably the ultimate Tony Banks keyboard performance, but it was taken for I Heart Prog. This one is from the same album and is every bit as good.

374.PIP The Squirming Coil (live) -- Phish

A Live One version, recorded at their first festival, The Clifford Ball. Page McConnell's playing on this, especially on live versions with extended outros, owes a lot to ... Tony Banks.

I assume this keyboard warrior is more piano, less Synth Smorg?

It's the keyboard equivalent of Guitar Hero, All About That Bass, etc. Outstanding performances. Doesn't matter which keyboard instrument(s).

Some interesting harmonica songs, maybe...

Round 373.xx

Category: Harmonicalooza

Song: Start Today

Artist: Gorilla Biscuits

Featuring the world's first hardcore breakdown with a harmonica solo at the end for some reason. Sounds good to me!

Round 374.xx

Category: Harmonicalooza

Song: Orange Blossom Special (Live at Folsom Prison)

Artist: Johnny Cash

Even gets a shout-out and total solo, if not a virtuoso one until a little bit later into it. "Have to change harmonicas faster than kiss a duck!"

I ain't to worried about getting my nourishment in New York
Well I don't care if I do-da-do-da-do-da-do-da-do

Aaaaah... thanks for the clarification.  Makes sense.   So basically kick ### piano/keyboard solos/parts.

Been on a deep dive the last week for another category, and forgot how much Matt wailed on the piano for some of their songs.

374.8 or 12 - Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Clubland  (KB Warriors)

Steve Nieve plays a huge role in the Attractions and Imposters. He provides a lot of lead parts on keyboards because Costello is mostly a rhythm guitarist.

It's rare for a pianist who can be flamboyant like Nieve to also be concise. His solos are never very long and on sometimes like Get Happy!, they're nonexistent. But Nieve always makes his presence felt.

It's late to be messing around with Dayton. If the dice come up on a retired channel, I'll re-roll.

I have to have a song with a good beat if I'm dealing with a breakup.

I'm pretty much retired from dating/marriage, but I like this advice. I've always gone maudlin as hell in my music whether I've been the dumpee (most often; also is that a word?)) or the dumper (sounds even more inappropriate). Those songs always made it worse.

375.8 or 12 - Oran "Juice" Jones - The Rain (Breakup)

A creepy and vindictive 80s R&B breakup song from a singer who shared a nickname with O.J. Simpson.  SNL and Donald Glover did a sketch about it in 2018 that isn't as weird as the song they were parodying.

I can feel the burn from here.

When that guy sideswiped me recently, and then dismissed me while walking in to get his food, I wanted so bad to dig my key across the side of his door. The goodness in me won over, but I wanted to. 🔑

Breaking Up

Rd 375: the remedy for a broken heart (why am I so in love) by XXXTENTACION

I'm sadder than most of y'all with the money and the freedom, #####
What is money really worth if it ain't love?
I'ma find a perfect balance, it's gon' take time
I heard shawty still in love through the grape vine

Rd 376: Screaming Infidelities by Dashboard Confessional

Well as for now I'm gonna hear the saddest songs
And sit alone and wonder
How you're making out
And as for me, I wish that I was anywhere, with anyone
Making out
