ilov80s on steroids, part 1

Round 431:

Piano Men

A. Crazy Water -- Elton John

Blue Moves is severely underrated. Its high points are REALLY high for me.

B. Big Shot -- Billy Joel

One of the first cassettes I owned as a kid was 52nd Street.

Songs to Play at the End of the World

C. On the Beach -- Neil Young

Inspired by the apocalyptic novel by Nevil Shute.

I went to the radio interview, but I ended up alone at the microphone
&

D. End of the Universe -- Screaming Trees

Chaos, musically and lyrically.

I've had these two songs lined up since this category was first mentioned.

431.NVa - I Know The End - Pheobe Bridgers - Songs for the End of the World

431.NVb - The Greatest - Lana Del Rey - Songs for the End of the World

If this is it, I'm signing off
Miss doing nothin' the most of all
Hawaii just missed that fireball
L.A. is in flames‚ it's getting hot
Kanye West is blond and gone
"Life on Mars?" ain't just a song
I hope the live stream's almost on

Round 431

Songs for the end of the World

Not in my usual wheelhouse of music but actually my second pick by this artist. Remember like a month ago I said I was watching a movie and heard a song for a category not yet in rotation? Well this is it. Title track of the movie and also a kind of running joke throughout.

Sturgill Simpson-The Dead Don't Die

OH suggested that, instead of songs about Memphis, we should have the category be "It Came From Memphis," named after this excellent book.  This category would spring from W.C. Handy through development of the blues to the birth of rock and roll right there in Memphis to Sun/Stax to Big Star to Justin Timberlake and beyond.  Could be songs about Memphis, but also could be songs that sprung from Memphis or from the people who sprung from Memphis.

431.8 or 12 - Tom Waits - The Earth Died Screaming  (End of the World)

There was thunder
There was lightning
And then the stars went out
And the moon fell from the sky
It rained mackerel, it rained trout
And the great day of wrath has come
And here's mud in your big red eye
And the poker's in the fire
And the locusts take the sky
And the earth died screaming
While I lay dreaming
While I lay dreaming of you

4!2!9!.k!4!  Los! Campesinos! - You! Me! Dancing!  (This! Is! The! Beginning!)
Could there BE any more exclamation points in this post?
Fixed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

432.k4  Paul McCartney - Despite Repeated Warnings  (End of the World)

Not a lot to mine in the Beatles' catalogs for this category.  This song is about the world coming to end because of climate change deniers and "certain" politicians who have steered the ship in the wrong direction.

Round 432:

Geology 101

A. Keep Playin' That Rock and Roll -- Edgar Winter's White Trash

One of the many things that I hate about Seger's Old Time Rock and Roll is that a bunch of people made a lot of money stealing from this song.

B. Hot Rockin' -- Judas Priest

I remember enjoying this in the early MTV years.

Bright Lights, Big City

C. Into the City -- Teenage Fanclub

The city secrets open up before my eyes
The colored street is beautiful, there's butterflies
It feels so alive
Feels so alive

&

D. Century City -- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

We're gonna live in Century City
Go ahead and give in, Century City
Like modern men, modern girls
We're gonna live in the modern world

&

THE END OF THE WORLD

431.xx:  NINE INCH NAILS - SURVIVALISM

Link

Hypnotic sound of sirens
Echoing through the street
The cocking of the rifles
The marching of the feet

You see your world on fire
Don't try to act surprised
We did just what you told us
Lost our faith along the way
And found ourselves believing your lies

@Eephus and @ditkaburgers, what's the current dim sum scene in SF?  I just booked a semi-spontaneous trip June 25-28, and one of my must-dos anytime there is dim sum.  I doubt the rolling carts are even a thing at this point?  Any recommendations on a great spot that's open now?

ETA:  XLB a big plus but not necessary.

California reopens tomorrow so maybe there's hope for dim sum carts. I've only had takeout lately.

Our usual spots have been hit pretty hard by the pandemic. Our regular downtown closed as did a place in the avenues we'd been to a couple of times. As for XLB, our hole in the wall dumpling spot on Balboa closed too. Even Martin Yan's $$$ place in the SF Center went under.

I've never had good dim sum in Chinatown. Yank Sing is a safe boring choice downtown. I can't recommend anything out in the Avenues since Ton Kiang is no more.  The best dim sum in the area has always been in the suburbs south of the city near the airport so it could be a getaway day thing.

Thanks!  Sorry to hear about all the places being hit so hard.  Yank Sing is one I've visited several times and would be perfectly happy with it if that is one of the best remaining options.  It's kind of corporate "boring" like you said, but the food is more than good enough for me.
