Five Word Song Titles  - LAST CHANCE

simey said:
Tell rock that getting angry over ignorance or stupidity isn't worth the energy that it sucks out of you. By the way, I hope Snoopy gives you a ride sometimes in his Camel plane. You've been working those wings a lot over the past year.
The Sopwith Camel goes unmanned most nights. Ol' Snoop is getting old, I'm afraid. His vision isn't what it used to be, and the air turbulence gets to him when he's flying. He's got problems from getting shot down so much by that Red Baron that he's not sure what to do with himself in the air once the wind takes hold of his propellor plane, even in peacetime. I kick rocks for the old sop and generally just stay grounded most of the time in my bird feeder. It's how I'm able to fly most times relatively unperturbed without our beloved beagle unleashing a screaming coming across the sky. I think he secretly harbors up his energy to fly in to see his cousin Spike and his big brother Olaf. They're all getting up there in years, Spike in the desert and Olaf no great model of health, and I think seeing them is important to him. Spike gets lonely, Olaf is not long for this mortal coil, I am afraid.

Anyway, enough with the dispatches from the front. See you all soon.

Round 518 - 100k

Biond - TFW

She only had 69k streams of this song and I might be responsible for at least half of them lol

Round 518:

100K

Flatmax -- Great Time

Up-and-coming Philly band with 9,079 monthly listeners that gets occasional play on WXPN. The drummer is the brother-in-law of one of my best friends. We were in the wedding party together, and I met the rest of the band during wedding festivities. The afterparty was held in a barn and they played a brief set.

Their music is varied and hard to describe. The above track, from their new EP, has a trip hop feel to it.

Round 518

100K

Just making the cut at 97k

Detroit Cobras- Cry On
@Dr. OctopusPlease don't forget to add these to the 100K playlist.

519.8 or 12 - Wolf Parade - Yulia  (NASA)

Song is based on an apocryphal Soviet space program where Cosmonauts were sent on suicide missions with no plan for return.

BONUS FIVE WORD SONG TITLES BEFORE WE SAY THE WORD AND THEY'LL BE FREE

Say Hello to the Angels -- Interpol

The first Interpol album was another big one for me during my Lost Years. It even has a nine word song title if we ever go  that route.

Walk Through to This Side -- Screaming Trees

As I said earlier, Invisible Lantern is chock full of good songs, so why not take a second one today?

My Heart Is a Flower -- King Missile

Another one played at the Princeton eating club set where I had my brief conversation with John S. Hall about fruit punch. This was their current single at the time.

What Deaner Was Talkin' About -- Ween

Gener wrote the lyrics after he took acid for the first time.

A Shot in the Arm -- Wilco

Another favorite line of mine:

The ashtray says you were up all night
&

Punch You in the Eye -- Phish

Also a candidate for This Is the Beginning, this song was played at the first Phish show I saw (in 1993) and it grabbed me instantly. It has never appeared on a studio album. This version is from the Ventura live album, taken from a 1997 show.

Hold Me in Your Arms -- The Black Keys

I saw them in 2003 at a small, now-defunct venue in a shady part of Philly after a friend encouraged me to come with him (the same one who got me into the Walkmen frat house show I mentioned earlier). I loved their set and picked up Thickfreakness, their current CD, at the merch table. This was one of the songs from it that grabbed me. Never would have guessed they'd be playing MSG less than a decade later, but they were.

Then You Smile at Me -- Bill Withers

Exemplary slice of late '70s R&B.

The Hissing of Summer Lawns -- Joni Mitchell

Never has suburban disillusionment sounded so haunting.

Round 521.xx - Filthy Lucre - Tell The Vision - Pop Smoke ft. Kanye West and Pusha T

We made it, [ ] made it, we made it, thank God that I made it, look Momma I made it

For his new album, DONDA, Kanye West is living in the Mercedes-Benz Center and making personal appearances at events. While at first it seems glamorous, he lives in a spartan manner there, in a room with a bed on the floor, and apparently a personal chef.

"Mercedes-Benz Stadium appeared to embrace their newest tenant with open arms, changing its Twitter name to 'DONDA Studio at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.' West has become a fixture at the stadium over the last week, even appearing among the fans at an Atlanta United soccer game on Saturday. A representative for the stadium confirmed to CNN that West has set up a studio inside the 71,000-capacity building. West relocating for an album release has some precedent: In 2018, his string of five album releases in five weeks emerged from the base he had set up in Wyoming.

From what could be heard from Donda so far, the album includes features from Jay-Z, Lil Baby, Lil Durk, Pop Smoke, Travis Scott, Pusha T, and Baby Keem, and addresses West’s family life after Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from the artist in February. West’s mother speaks in audio clips that played amid the album during the listening party."

This song has been burned into my brain for about a week now. While not necessarily explicitly about the lucre (and there are so many songs in the game about the lucre it's almost like inventory day at the rap-a-lympics) there's definitely that element of making it materially.

I used to eat fifty-cent cake/Now it's Philippe's/It's Philippe's for the steak

RIP Pop. So much nonsense in the world, and its entertainment has gotten crazy and gets crazier all the time.

Round 522.xx - FIlthy Lucre - EMI - Sex Pistols

Back when you could announce you were getting rich and slag your former label for wanting to get rich off of you before dropping you and you getting shot. Here Johnny Rotten sneers:

And you thought that we were faking
That we were all just money making
You do not believe we're for real
Or you would lose your cheap appeal?

Don't judge a book just by the cover
Unless you cover just another
And blind acceptance is a sign
Of stupid fools who stand in line

Like E.M.I/E.M.I/E.M.I

Unlimited edition
With an unlimited supply
That was the only reason
We all had to say goodbye

Unlimited supply (E.M.I)
There is no reason why (E.M.I)
I tell you it was all a frame (E.M.I)
They only did it 'cos of fame (E.M.I)
I do not need the pressure (E.M.I)
I can't stand those useless fools (E.M.I)
Unlimited supply (E.M.I)
Hello E.M.I
Goodbye A & M

This track scorches any earth in its path. Consider this the lyrical foreshadowing or the progenitor of the "Filthy Lucre" tour and in symbiosis with the "Rock N' Roll Swindle" claims and subsequent projects put out by Malcom McLaren, their manager, over Johnny Rotten's objections (if anyone truly understands the history or competing claims of the participants, please chime in). One of the best corporate label diss tracks mixed with a little bit of admission of greed and art and everything else.

I'm not cool enough to listen to either of these bands on the reg, though I've listened to both quite a bit, actually. Huh. So it is. Culled from a nice list of Velvet-y sounding songs, herewith:

Round 515 - Velvet Underground and the Bands... - Walking With Jesus - Spacemen 3

I could hear Nico singing this with the organ in the background. The throbbing drone and the propulsive drums make it a Velvet-y sounding affair.

Round 516 - Velvet Underground and the Bands... - Stoned And Starving - Parquet Courts

This one reeks of VU in a very, very good, skunky way.

Round 517 - Talk Radio - #####in' Camaro - The Dead Milkmen

"Hey man, nice car."

"Thanks, my parents drove it up from the Bahamas"

"You're kidding!"

"I must be...the Bahamas are islands."

Round 518 - Talk Radio - December 4th - Jay-Z

Jay-Z's first full-length track off of his "retirement" album, replete with endorsements of his greatness by his mother. If the segment where they both talk about her labor not causing her any pain during his birth doesn't convince you of his greatness, nothing will.

Round 521

Filthy Lucre

I just heard that ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill died in his sleep yesterday :( .

This one is for you Dusty, may you rest in peace.

ZZ Top- Just Got Paid
Round 521

Filthy Lucre Take 2

This song is about the televangelist scandals of the late 80's. Is there any money dirtier than that made in the guise of religion?

Iron Maiden- Holy Smoke
