Genrepalooza Presents: FG Radio - Tons of Lithium but very little Chill (6 Viewers)

I almost picked this, but when I read the lyrics it was less about the Netherlands playing soccer in the seventies and more of everyone sociopolitically getting together to reject certain strains of thought in America. Regardless of what you think of their program (pogrom?) it was less sporting that way. And the blank Tom Brady is likely because he and Kraft and Belichick were seen as sporting progenitors of a certain red hat, which they all wore at first.

I found the song rather arrogant and off-putting, actually, once I realized what it was about. But I begrudge them nothing. If the only way I could issue a clarion call to all the erstwhile classical liberals out there was through musical expression, I suppose I would, though the word "total" in anything politically-themed or named immediately sends my Spidey senses aflutter and almost tilted.
I just thought it was funny.

One of the books I've had the most pleasure reading (drunk, as F. Scott would have appreciated) ever. F. Scott was ahead of the game with that book in so many stylistic, emotional, and insightful ways. He was a little bound by the imperfect psychiatry of the time (isn't it always?), but managed to turn the events of the novel into universal observations, little affected by psychiatry or its seeming dominion. He moved it away from mere discipline into the unique realm of human emotion and long-standing philosophy and yearning. And his criticism and prognostication of what would happen in modern society through the coupling at the end is something to behold.

Be interested to hear the song.

I reread Tender is the Night in middle age after originally reading it in my early 20s. I wasn't as blown away the second time around but that's probably just me being jaded. My biggest problem was Nicole who wasn't as believable to old man Eephus.  Still some lovely prose though.

You will walk differently alone, dear, through a thicker atmosphere, forcing your way through the shadows of chairs, through the dripping smoke of the funnels. You will feel your own reflection sliding along the eyes of those who look at you. You are no longer insulated; but I suppose you must touch life in order to spring from it.

Tuesday last chance

  1. Moar Cowbell
  2. Bright Lights Big City (Songs about the urban life)
  3. NASA Mission Control (Songs about space, being spacy or taking up space)
  4. This is the End -- songs with great endings, codas, etc.
  5. Beat It (Great drums and/or percussion parts)
  6. Illiterature (Songs about books, authors and literary characters)
Roll set 1
Die rolls: 1
Roll subtotal: 1
Roll total: 1

Moar Cowbell - LAST CHANCE

Well, I'm back to work and catching up on my picks. Hopefully, I can back on schedule, so I'm not dropping these longs posts every few days. I already love my new job, and it's only the first day! I feel like I haven't been able to say that in a long time 🎉

Rizzle Kicks - Skip To The Good Bit

Round 520 -  NASA (Thurs)

This was taken a long time ago for another category. I was gonna draft it myself until I realized that.

ETA: Looks like there was a typo in the spreadsheet, which means it might not have come up in a search. It's fixed now.

Maybe I should go back and read a Fitzgerald short story.

Oh shoot! Thanks for letting me know!

Round 521 - Zero to Sixty (Fri) Re-do

Amerie - 1 Thing

One of @Eephus' favorites lol
Mine also! Took it for a recent draft. The sample, by producer Rich Harrison, is a completely cut up and chopped version of the break in The Meters' "Oh, Calcutta." The sample in the song is right about here, at 1:41-2 or so in: https://youtu.be/UJtRScjGK0U?list=RDUJtRScjGK0U&t=99

It works like this: https://youtu.be/pnLGmjcgLQw. Another of a similar bent. https://youtu.be/shWHONN_VbY

On the D.C. Go-Go influence of her album: https://www.okayplayer.com/music/amerie-1-thing-touch-interview.html. Sort of a bittersweet label tale. A telling line, paraphrased: "I felt like we had to break in urban radio before they would try to make you a pop star. I didn't necessarily appreciate the extra step."

I always hear about D.C. Go-Go. I spent five years there hearing about the Go-Go clubs. I cannot tell you how to identify a piece of Go-Go music, surely something I missed in the ether of my own sort of lost years.

I'm not musically intelligent enough to explain it in technical terms, but.....

One way I'd put it is that Go-Go  swings more than typical funk, which can be a little knotty at times (I'm mainly talking the '70s versions here). And, while both use a lot of percussion effects, Go-Go's percussion seems smoother to me - lots of bongos, too.

Go-Go had some good singers, but the main emphasis was on the band making music to dance to. There are about a billion mainstream funk band records that don't lend themselves to dancing. That's all Go-Go was about - dancing.

Trouble Funk, Rare Essence, Experience Unlimited, and Chuck Brown probably had the biggest effect nationally, but there were dozens of good DC Go-Go acts in DC back in the day.

@KarmaPoliceor whoever, please add the following picks to the Working for a Living playlist:

Working in a Coal Mine by Devo

Mr. Cab Driver by Lenny Kravitz

If I Were a Carpenter by Robert Plant

Factory by Bruce Springsteen

Private Dancer by Tina Turner

Oh, the Boss is Coming by Arkelis

Plus the two I just picked.

Also, Lee Scratch Perry's I'm the Upsetter is on here but it was picked for Rude Youth.

Round 531.xx

Category: Radio Alpha

Song: My Name Is Jonas

Artist: Weezer

First song off of first album with an acoustic guitar part and then a bar chord bomb of an introduction. This immediately came to mind when the category was picked. Lest anyone think I'm Weezer-centric and that they're a terrible, hokey act, I looked up "Best Songs Off Of Debut Albums" and this made NPR's best "debut album, first song" list. Just a killer.

Guess what I received/in the mail today
Words of deep concern from my little brother

The building's not going as he planned
The foreman has injured his hand
The dozer will not clear a path
The driver swears he learned his math

The workers are going home
The workers are going home...

Thanks, Uruk. I remember Chuck Brown's name and can vaguely remember the areas (in NW/NE D.C. only, really) where Go-Go was big (and can hear the music coming from the clubs) but never knew what distinguished the music. It makes sense when I think about it.

Rock says he's taken two Phoenix songs off of the Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart album. "Armistice" is this other. He claims he almost took it twice for Side 2, Track X.

There are a handful of bands that peaked with their debut album, Weezer is one of them imo.

Yeah, Pinkerton makes an argument from confusion, but it’s really not as good in the end. Give me the Blue album, even though I love the sing-along element of “El Scorcho.” Pinkerton is a snapshot in time of a twenty-two or twenty-three year old me, still on campus, wondering who that funky dude in the mirror is, staring back at me. (Not necessarily in a good way.)

Since this thing keeps going, here are some channel ideas for the next Dayton rolls.  If you hate any, now's the time to speak up.

Itchy & Scratchy Show (Songs with turntable scratching)
The Remnants (Undrafted songs from Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and their members)
Beelze and the Bubs (Songs about the Devil)
Emerald Isle (Irish Acts)
Remixes (NOT REMASTERS)
Songs that make you cry
Radio Radio (songs about the radio)
N'awlins (The music and musicians of New Orleans)

Additional ideas welcome.

Do we have a playlist of songs using samples? Maybe a double song playlist like the segue one? @woodstock's comments about Amerie and The Meters was fascinating!

Some winners here. I've long thought a radio channel would be excellent, but then thought it might be too shallow. But I totally dig it if it's just a mention of the radio or something in a song. The only two I'm not really up for are the Irish Acts and the Remnants. I absolutely do not hate either one, though. I think Irish will be tough because of the Beeb category and Led Zep and Floyd are way out of my wheelhouse. I was going to suggest a Simon and Garfunkel artist channel the other night, but I feared we have too many songs already taken by them, a fear I share with Zep and Floyd.

I'm ducking behind the couch as Raging and KP throw things at their screen upon reading this.

I can deal with most of these. Will probably get flagged for taking songs already drafted for a couple of these tho, lol.

How do I sort the spreadsheet by artist or alphabetically?

Thanks a bunch! We do not have a list like that. But I have a Desert Island mix of songs with samples, including the original and the sampled, from a previous draft that I did with the fine folks here. It was edited in retrospect. I'll see if I can link it (my Spotify is down). It's a collaborative playlist now, because I want people to be able to see it and I'm not sure if mere linking will work without that feature.

"Apache," "Amen, Brother," and "Rock Co.Kane Flow" are the only three songs missing certain brethren or sister records.  "Apache," by the Incredible Bongo Band, is the first known use of sampling. It samples The Shadows' "Apache" and gives the song credit. But it adds bongos and other things to the mix to become a hip hop staple. "Amen, Brother" has no corresponding song whatsoever that they either sampled or that sampled them to go along with it. It's stand-alone. Both "Apache" and "Amen, Brother" are in there because they're the most used samples in hip hop and considered foundational breaks within the sampling world.  The "Amen Break" is a term of art in DJ'ing the break is so popular.

"Rock Co.Kane Flow" has no corresponding sample involved, I just thought it was great DJ'ing. De La Soul even knows it and says during the track that they refuse to say the producer's name because they're old-school. Nah, guys, you weren't doing it because he stole the show.

I learned a ton doing the playlist and included both modern and older songs that incorporated the format.

Herewith a mix for your perusal:

eta* Santigold's song is a stand-alone, too. I think Spotify kiboshed "Brooklyn Go Hard" since I did the list and I didn't edit it to reflect that. Brooklyn. We. Go. Hard. We go hard.
