Genrepalooza Presents: FG Radio - Tons of Lithium but very little Chill (4 Viewers)

Shouldn't Jose, Jim, and Johnnie be on their sixth roll? I thought we just had them at five. Could be dreaming. I picked "Doublewhiskeycokenoice" and made it a two-fer Dillinger Four day just about a few days ago. (A song I just realized I already picked for Aretha and Otis but not for the playlist. Whoops.)

I stop counting rolls after #5 when channels head to Last Chance Kitchen for elimination rolls.

Channels can get rolled six or more times if they manage to escape the Last Chance roll.  I think Southern Rock had eight turns but there have been others with seven.

Bumping this to the new page. Now including Illegal Pulp Noir, Motor City and Upstairs, Downstairs.

Round 535 - Bad Brains - Right Brigade - Screaming

Nobody could quite scream like H.R., nobody had quite the ethereal reggae voice he had. Just singular.

But the funny thing about you is
You remembered to leave it behind
And the funny thing about me is
I'm a member of the right brigade

Jerry Jeff was a heavy drinker for years, and earned his reputation as a party animal.

Round 535

Sangria Wine - Jerry Jeff Walker  (The J, J, & J Show / Booze)

Jerry Jeff eventually gave up drinking.  He got throat cancer in 2017, and in 2018 made his last album, which included this song he wrote about getting sober.

Rain Song - Jerry Jeff Walker  (The J, J, & J Show / Booze)
I put a sad face because it seems too little, too late. I often worry about the development of problems with my own throat and lungs (twenty year smoker). No bueno.

We could include songs that mention the name of the city they play in or their team name.
I agree that we need something new. I'm not sure that'll carry the day, though. NV said he had some stuff percolating. I was thinking broad categories, as doing this draft has sort of tapped my song base, to be honest. Unless I come up with more somehow. Which I probably can in some way.

I don't know what I'm writing right now other than to say we probably should do something different other than X miles away, which we've done two or three times.

Round 535 - Bad Brains - Right Brigade - Screaming

Nobody could quite scream like H.R., nobody had quite the ethereal reggae voice he had. Just singular.

But the funny thing about you is
You remember to leave it behind
And the funny thing about me is
I'm a member of the right brigade

i took the platter in the last album draft i participated in, with that tune as one of the nuggets for the Spotty list ... needless to say, i feel i snagged the s.o.d.  :coffee:

(not the Billy Milano version).

The lightning building ROIR sessions album (simply usually titled Bad Brains) or Rock For Light? I ask because I get very few vinyl albums, just got the live one, and am deciding on whether to get one of the two. I'm leaning Rock For Light, which has long had hardcore fans decrying Ric Ocasek's production "touch." I disagree with them. His production sheen is fine by me. I personally just like Rock For Light better and am leaning that way because of the strength of the songs. What says otb?

oh, yes ... it were "RFL" 🤘

i though the "polish" from Ocasek that most fans decried was more akin to a spit shine ...

... cohesive enuff to smoove some imperfections, while still allowing the sheer power to hit center channel.  not unlike Thomas & Price working their knobs to the bone spiffying up the "Bollocks" sessions.

Nice to have an ear like yours in agreement with an unpopular opinion that I happen to hold. Decision made! RFL it is.

Round 536 (Early) - Uptight - The Interpreters - 100K Listeners

437 listeners this month, now 438. An album I genuinely love. I was introduced to it by my friend's roommate in the late nineties who was from Philly. Pip, any recollection?

Beat that, fellas! They were supposed to be huge, then they played the R convention in 2000, lost their base, their moorings, everything. I'd liked them before that, in case anybody is wondering. Philly was the home of the convention and they picked a hip, local band.

Oof.

The few-note intro to this song fuels a bit of tension, and then we get a bar chord freak-out. No bands in the nineties were playing this sort of stuff, and in my opinion, this paved the way for the disco-punk or the guitar tone of the aughts. They got compared to the Buzzcocks a lot. They sure had chops. Among the many that never made it for reasons beyond them.

eta* I said this was a record-breaker, but KP clocked in with only 7 monthlies? Oh my. That's too rich for my blood.

Yes, it could be songs that mention the state or any city within the state of the NFL team the player is on, and it could also include the state or city within the state of the college the player played for. That would make it broader and easier than in the past. I want easy.

I'd seriously advocate for anybody who likes punk or disco-punk or the Buzzcocks to check out that Interpreters album. It's sonic, but diverse, with just enough in the rhythm section and beat changes to make it very interesting. They're right in my wheelhouse. Perhaps YMMV, but I always thought this was one of the best of the nineties.

Buzzcockian

The Rains Are Coming

The beat change in this one is wonderful

Make Up Your Mind

A little bass walk. Another weirdly textured pop-punk song with an almost talked-out yet hushed vocal

Or mascot. That could make it broad enough hopefully.

Loving the Unwed Teenage Mothers track. All the bands listed in the "Listeners Also Like" section are righteous. The Marked Men are *chef's kiss* the best punk rock had to offer from the late aughts. Radioactivity was still kicking around as of 2015 at least. The other bands, I just took a listen to. Straight indie/punk.

A nice B-side, for sure. This could have been my favorite Radiohead song back in the aughts (around 2002-2005) if not for a few off of Amnesiac.
good to see some Amnesiac appreciation. i'm not sure it gets the appreciation it probably merits. some strong experimental and jazzier stuff

"Life In A Glasshouse" and "Packt Like Sardines In A Crushed Tin Box" could be my favorite Radiohead songs. Yorke had the jazz ensemble for "Life In A Glasshouse" play repeatedly for about eight hours until the band cut that take and just left, leaving Yorke to implore them to come back, so the story goes.

i've read that too. they were like 80 years old too iirc

5 monthly listeners! Take that, KP!

Round 536:

Transmission Is Static Free -- The Sixfifteens

I took a song by Dryer for Grrrls Grrrls Grrrls. My high school buddy was the drummer for that band and this one, both based out of Saratoga Springs, NY. He and the male frontman formed The Sixfifteens when Dryer broke up. Their only full-length, Feature, Conference, Transfer, was mostly songs about how much the frontman hated his day job. His boss was my buddy's (now ex) wife. Awkward! This was my favorite from that collection.

Unlike with Dryer, the peak of the Sixfifteens' activity coincided with my Lost Years, and I would go in to NYC to see them whenever they would play there. At one gig I met Jason Loewenstein of Sebadoh, who was friends with one of the other members of the band.

Why 5 monthly listeners now? Musicians tend to not have their #### together about anything other than music. Most bands who achieve a modicum of success have at least one member who does have their #### together about other stuff. This band ... did not. Also, things didn't end well for them and my buddy and the frontman basically don't acknowledge that this band ever happened, so there's certainly no effort to promote their Spotify page. They reformed Dryer in 2008 and that band has played sporadic gigs in Saratoga since then.
