Can I make my own comedy recording?  I can do tewnty minutes on the Hill Country Lavender Scented Toilet Paper that HEB is offering.  But wait- they also have Tropical Scent!

Who the actual eff smells their toilet paper?
@krista4 This is almost as ridiculous as an anecdote in Produced by George Martin  in which he mentions that the office bathrooms had toilet paper with “property of EMI” printed on every sheet.

”Who in the world would want to steal toilet paper?” he asked in a pre-COVID world.

Also from a marketing perspective that’s bad brand placement. People are wiping their ### with your logo.

Is this the last time for First Wave or are we rerolling?
I'm not sure, but we agreed to stop categories after four rolls - but that hasn't happened making some of these playlists unwieldly. I suppose at this point you should feel free to pick a song from it if you llike.

Round 63:

Soul Town channel

Show and Tell -- Al Wilson

I wish I could say this was a car-radio song I heard as a child, but I didn't come across it until a few years ago when it was taken in the soul/funk/R&B draft I did on my other sports/music geek board.
Al Wilson was one of those guys - like William Bell - who should have been more successful than he was. He had a classic, smooth voice kinda in the Jerry Butler mold. He had one biggish hit that I can recall before this in "The Snake" in the late 60s, but that was it for his popular success.

Anyway, I DID hear this on the car radio in 1973 and immediately bought the 45. The melody and arrangement are perfect early 70s light soul. And Wilson sings the hell out of the song. One of those records I never get tired of. Great pick.

Never heard this before.  Motown Records in the late-Detroit period had incredible production values.
Yeah the band sounds great. Strings and  some wicked distorted guitar which you don’t think of in a Motown song. Of course the rhythm section is on point as well.

Soul

Not many stories in music as sad as hers. As a teen she dated a much older and physically abusive James Brown. She achieved fame dueting with Marvin Gaye. He would go on to massive solo success and fame while she never was able to really break away from the role of backup singer. From there she spent time with David Ruffin who asked her to marry him. She accepted and announced it to her fans only to find out Ruffin was already married. He was also physically abusive to the point of supposedly even hitting in her the head with a hammer. During this period she developed terrible headaches which turned out to be caused by a cancerous brain tumor. By age 24, her tragic and difficult life had concluded. What a cruel and unfair world it is to so many of its more precious gifts.

(I meant that's the name of the song...)

Another sad story.  Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway met each other while studying music at Howard University. They became close friends and duet partners. They won a grammy in 1973 for their duet "Where is the Love?"  Donny started battling severe depression, and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. In 1977, Roberta wanted Donny to record "The Closer I Get to You" with her, but he was too sick to go to NY, so he recorded his part in Chicago, and it was sent back to NY to finalize.  The song was released in 1978, and it became a #1 hit. In early 1979, Roberta again wanted Donny to record some music with her, and he recorded two duets with her in NY.  On January 13th, he and Roberta worked on the second duet in the recording studio. He later had dinner with her, and then went back to his hotel and committed suicide by jumping out the window (15th floor). Roberta was devastated.  After his death, Roberta said the song "The Closer I Get to You" would always be dedicated to Donny, and that all proceeds from the single would go to Donny's widow and children.

Always get her confused w/ Jean Terrell.

ETA:  which sent me down a Boxrec rabbit hole for Jean's brother Ernie.  I recognize more heavyweights from the 1960s than current day.

ETA:  On his way up, 23 year old Ernie fought John Lee Storey who fought under the name of Young Jack Johnson.  Young Jack was 35 and was pretty much a professional opponent by that stage of his career.  Terrell took two unanimous decisions from Young Jack, both going ten rounds but the crazy thing is the bouts were less than a month apart in Dec 62-Jan 63.

Storey/Johnson fought only once more getting knocked out by Cleveland "Big Cat" Williams and died two weeks before JFK in November.  Couldn't find any info re: his death.

I listened to The Joint mix while on a walk today.  There's a lot of old school reggae that bears more than a passing resemblance to the Soul records being drafted today.  There's also a No Doubt song that only ventures into Jamaican territorial waters during its rap verse.

This slight departure from what one would think of as traditional soul still qualifies on vibe alone. Music by Bacharach, lyrics by Hal David. I jogged my memory with some lists of all-time greats, and this one just struck me, regardless of its position on said lists.

Warwick's string of Bacharach-David hits are such great records.  Her voice is perfect for the material and arrangements.  A more idiosyncratic Soul singer would have upset the balance.

They are great records, IMHO. I personally come to them not from that period in the nineties when Bacharach became cool again and bossa nova was hispter rage, but from simply being in the car at the age of ten listening to cassettes my mother had. Kind of funny, that. "Walk On By." "Do You Know The Way To San Jose." Stuff like that.

Nice ear, I can feel the soul she put into a song that wasn’t meant to be soul.  It’s a keeper.
