President Trump deserves credit for... (1 Viewer)

Well, besides the fact that I almost never agree with Jim Cramer, you really didn’t answer my question. What is the difference between the old NAFTA deal and the new one?
So you're going to disregard the opinion and article from a major liberal media outlet.

I'll keep posting articles that basically state that Trump's china policy will be mimicked by Biden, and is a complete reversal of Obamas EIGHT YEARS of doing absolutely nothing.

Third times the charm I hope:

How is the new NAFTA deal significantly different from the old one? Please explain.

Few things..No, I don't believe Biden will mimic Trump’s policies with China...that would again leave us in a worse position than we already were.  Also, to claim Obama did absolutely nothing in regards to China is flat out false.  What do you think the purpose of TPP was?

"Why isn't Biden dropping Tariffs?" - Washington Post

So many liberals in this thread and in this forum parroting from liberal media source how bad the Tariffs were.

Here is an article from your beloved Washington Post.
Oh, it's not just the liberals....us conservative/moderate types also understand tariffs are merely a tax on us.  They will get us nothing and if Biden continues them as the sole means in his approach he'll be as foolish as Trump.

Yeah did you read the article? I suspect you only read the headline.

If you had read even the first paragraph of the article, you would have seen this line:

There are NO defensible reasons for keeping Trump’s tariffs in place.

Please read the rest of the article as the writer explains why. And thank you for posting it.

Sigh, of course I read the article.

Because he hasn’t been inaugurated yet?

Odd to be critical of a man who isn’t in office yet.  Because he said he wouldn’t immediately drop them?  Odd logic.

For the record, I absolutely believe Trump was on the right side of China policy as opposed to do-nothing Obama.  So this is a shockingly good decision by Biden...if he just repeats Trump policy I'll be tickled pink.

I just wanted to see the liberals in this forum try to explain their discontent with Trump on China and then all of a sudden okay with Biden continuing those policies.

I find that interesting.

Who said they are ok with Biden  of he does the same as Trump?  Biden is not in office...he cannot enact policies.

And he is not saying he will just keep tariffs.  Your criticism is again misplaced.

You have yet to explain yourself why these tariffs are a positive. You have yet to explain why the new NAFTA deal was a positive.
I'll get to it.  I have other fish to fry...currently stewing over nimrod Newsom.

Well, first you have to find someone doing this right?

A major difference will be that Biden will work with European allies and Japan to confront China. Farmers in the USA were crushed by the tariffs, and China is falling short on its phase one "agreement" to buy. Peter Navarro has been wrong so many times, there's bound to be a better policy.

I'm not OK with it.

Obama's policies were pretty bad with China...Trump surprised me and doubled down on "pretty bad".  Asking to compare the two sets of policies is like asking someone if they want to eat two spoons of crap or three.  It's nonsensical.

This makes a lot more sense to me.

Is your stance that we should have more Obama-era policy with China?
Yes.  We should use multilateral trade pressure not unilateral.  The tariffs hurt American farmers and consumers far more than it hurt China.  Besides, even the hurt it did cause China, the people that run that country don't care.  They knew they could outlast and outwit Trump.

I think Trumps intent with China was good. I think his execution was poor.

How would you characterize Obama's China policy effectiveness?

How would you forecast Biden's?

not to mention the "socialism" these policies create which I find pretty funny given the fear mongering around the word.

They involve capital moving from the consumer to government (i.e. a tax).
In this case the Chinese currency debased itself by the approximate amount of the tarriffs, so the consumer didn't see a rise in the cost of goods.  So it really wasn't a tax, the consumer didn't pay it - the Chinese did through their currency.

This, of course didn't solve the issue of demand destruction done in retaliation (to US farmers, etc.).  Nor did we make much headway into further protections of our IP.  Clinton gave that away and we haven't really been able to get it back.  I do appreciate DJT trying.

It did? What was the Yuan worth in dollars in January of 2016? What is it worth today?

You do realize that there are other variables in time space that have had an effect since 2016, yes?  The U.S. has been actively debasing its currency during this COVID issue and the dollar has dropped dramatically this year.  This talks about China adjusting its currency in 2018.

The establishment of the Energy Resource Governance Initiative (ERGI) could prove to be a huge, huge deal as we accelerate the transition to clean energy. It is a multi-country consortium established in 2019 by the State Dept. designed to reduce dependence on China for metals and other supply chain components for EV's, solar/wind, batteries, etc.

This is obviously ironic given the rest of Trump's environmental agenda...but is expected to be expanded further during the Biden Administration.

The Trump administration’s top energy diplomat said on Friday he expects an initiative aimed at securing supply chains for metals critical for the clean energy transformation will continue with President-elect Joe Biden’s administration.

Increasing demand for renewable energy, electric vehicles, and battery storage technologies will create unprecedented demand for energy resource minerals. Energy Resource Governance Initiative (ERGI) is a U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Energy Resources (ENR)-led effort designed to promote sound mining sector governance and resilient energy mineral supply chains. Through this initiative, ENR will engage countries to advance governance principles, share best practices, and encourage a level playing field. ERGI will also promote resilient and secure energy resource mineral supply chains.

One of the bright spots....glad they decided to continue the pursuit of this during this admin.....when they implemented the absurd tariffs on canadas solar panels i wondered if theyd do something with this too, cause "obama bad" seemed to their measuring stick with these things.

I give Trump credit for not supporting this garbage budget with crappy COVID support.

Pull COVID out of that garbage budget, pass it separate for $2k and proper unemployment benefits.

Lots of people are hurting in real time because Trump is bitter about losing the election. He deserves no credit for this.

Please stop enabling the fear mongering of lazy politicians.  The bill needs fixing yesterday. It should have been done weeks ago. Fix it now. As a matter of ideaology I refuse to reward bad behavior.
