2021 Music Thread - Spoon, The War on Drugs, Parquet Courts (1 Viewer)

Listened to the new Viagra Boys album, Welfare Jazz, on my walk today.

I enjoyed the WHOLE thing.

Lot's of good songs to offer as samples, but I'll stick with the good, old fashioned, instrumental jam - Six Shooter.

Viva 2021!

Please don't sleep on Viagra Boys. Every song of theirs that pops up is a winner for me, going back to Sports. They keep getting called punk, but like long ago fellow swedish fun band, The Leather Nun, not really the right tag in spite of some punk attitudes.

Listened to the new Shame album in the background to typing, per NV's recommendation. Good stuff.

Really looking forward to the new Vince Staples this year, if Stereogum's list is to be believed. Him and Spoon were the ones I remember. Love to hear new Spoon. Was listening to Hot Thoughts about a month ago and was thinking about how good it was for a band that far into its tenured status.

Also really looking forward to Pusha T and Lorde -- and Dinosaur Jr., another tenured band that manages to still make really interesting rock records.

Kiwi Jr. released their new album today. Their first album was really fun and this one is good too.

The two comparisons they always get are Pavement and Parquet Courts and those are fair but they're more than just a derivative rip off.

Thanks for this rec...gave it a whirl today and didn't really turn my crank, even though I see where the PQ & Pavement comparisons come from. Kind of a light, poppy version (at least this new album), which doesn't work for me as much. Kept waiting for the guitars.

On first listen I think I prefer their first album to this one but I'll give it a few more spins.

I was thinking they have a new album since they've been all over my spotify ...but it's Goat Girl. They don't like being called Miss Goat.
Like Goat Girl's album a lot.  They do a good job handling a bunch of different styles so it doesn't get repetitious over its 54 minute runtime.

Lead singer Clottie Cream has a cool name and a voice that's sits somewhere on the axis of Siouxsie and Chrissie Hynde.

I've been enjoying "Look Alive", the newest album by the Black Pistol Fire.  Admittedly, I don't feel any of the individual songs are exceptional, but as a gestalt, it's a very listenable and entertaining album.  Granted, I'm a big fan of The Black Keys, The Blues Stones, etc so it fits my genre preferences.

The Notwist released their first new album in 7 years last week---Vertigo Days.

It's a nice return to form.  It's not at the level of Neon Golden greatness (one of my favorite albums this century) but it's quite good and will likely improve with further listening .  My favorite album I've heard this year thus far.

I remember a very good friend- mutual buds with @Eephus- tell me about this place...I can't remember, but I think she lived there at the end? (ETA...this story with above video link was on my news feed this am @rockaction)

And I saw the pop-o-pies a couple times back then. Most memorably booed off the stage under a volley of thrown garbage (blues brothers rawhide style) after playing one chord full tilt while slowly reading a scathing review of them from the SF chronicle. Most punk thing I'd seen on stage.

Mogwai’s new album is awesome.
I tried. I kinda like it. It's just not the same anymore. I miss the days of squalling guitars and burnt amps, really. The dynamics of their more ferocious guitar burners coupled with the quiet minimalist and orchestral beauty of their other pieces is just sort of missing now. It's become all synthesis - they take the ideas of those jaw-dropping dynamics, condense them, and put them into the same song. It's almost as if they try and distill that feeling into twenty or thirty seconds of song and then loop it. It doesn't work as well, IMO. "Here We, Here We, Here We Go Forever" is an example of that at work.

I'll have to give the four or so songs I heard another listen. It's not as bad as I thought Rave Tapes was, that's for sure. Which I didn't really find "bad," just not up to par with their other stuff. Perhaps I've also outgrown post-rock. That's always possible.

The Hold Steady is appealing right now.

Seems like another good release day.

  • Julien Baker - Little Oblivions - apparently her "fullest sounding" yet, which means I'll probably love it.
  • Nick Cave/Warren Ellis - Carnage - getting excellent reviews and described as very much a lockdown album
  • Cloud Nothings - The Shadow I Remember - kind of snuck up on me but I like all their albums and there's usually one or two songs that really stand out and rise above as best of the year types.
  • Maximo Park - Nature Always Wins - A 3-piece now, this is getting good reviews. I've never stopped listening to them, so curious to see how their  "mature (and "woke")"  third act plays out.

The new Cloud Nothings is decent...not groundbreaking, but still good. Nothing's grabbed me, single-wise from that.

Today's RR looks solid, including them:

King Gizzard etc... Kind of a middle eastern vibe to what I've been hearing from them.

GBV- nothing's grabbed me yet, but as always sounds good.

Spoon single...sound alike just acoustic guitar and vocals. Nice- want to hear a full band though.

These New South Whales...love them, although these singles aren't tippy top for me.

Surfjan Stevens sounds identical to some of his other stuff...which is fine.

Paul Weller seems to have moved away from the overwrought and boring soul he's been doing. A little more back to the guitar roots. Intrigued.

Show Me The Body and Kadaver singles. Banging.

Wedding Present's stripped down covid releases have been nice. The songs all hold up.

Haven't listened yet....

Slothrust (slow-thrust or sloth-rust?)

Secrets of the Beehive

Sleep the Owls (my gb on drums and I wish somebody else on vocals)

The Walkmen

helado negro

The Vaccines (and not a moment too soon!)

I love everything I've heard from Slothrust so far.

Spoon song is a demo from 1999.

Not sure about you guys but I sure am looking forward to the next eight King Gizzard And Lizard Wizard albums to be released this month

My favorite RR find this week is the new Happyhappy album. It's, ummm, psychofolk- punk and it's so weird, but it's the only albumb from this week that I've listened to several times.

Here's the title track Psych Ward Chess Champion

I don't know if this song/video will resonate and have the same impact outside the Toronto area but holy #### it just hit me right in the feelings.

@bssmusic
This is an Unreleased jam to remind us that we must keep holding on — reach out —help each other— look around--we shall all be together soon —we love and miss you xoxo

How's It Going - Kevin Drew/Broken Social Scene

Two full listens now, Open Door Policy is easily the best Hold Steady album since Stay Positive
Hmmm.  I've been trying, and it's certainly better than Heaven... and Teeth Dreams, but I just like the songs on Thrashing better.  My continued reaction seems to be that it all just sounds so adult.

Worst of all, the second Unpleasant Breakfast came on, I sat up and took notice. But as I was telling @JZillayesterday, that ridiculous "woooo" in the chorus kills a great song.

Regardless, I keep listening and hoping it clicks.  And as much as I would like to, I'll refrain from asking about the "woooo" next time I get tickets for a soundcheck/Q&A.
