WR Tutu Atwell, LAR (1 Viewer)

Louisville junior WR Tutu Atwell has opted out of the Cardinals' remaining games and will enter the 2021 NFL Draft.

Atwell (5'9/165) was one of Louisville's most prolific playmakers on the offensive side of the football this season, along with RB Hassan Hall. In nine games the junior wide receiver caught 46 passes for 625 yards and seven touchdowns, most recently catching five passes for 78 yards and a score in Louisville's Nov. 28 loss at Boston College. Atwell was outstanding in 2019, as he established a new school record in receiving yards (1,276) and tied the school record in touchdown receptions (12). The Louisville standout is projected to be a Day 2 selection in next spring's NFL Draft.

Atwell is a 5'9" 165 lb speedster expected to run a sub 4.3 40 at his pro day. Production was the best in his sophomore season with just under 1300 yards receiving in 13 games. Expected to be a day 2 pick, he will give some team a dangerous deep threat.

At 165 I don't care if he runs sub 4.0. He isn't much of a WR. Schemed open a lot, very gadgety, not much skillset other than fast. Poor mans Ruggs, very bad version of Tavon Austin.

2021 NFL draft: Can 165-pound Tutu Atwell thrive among the big boys?

Excerpt:

82. Louisville WR Tutu Atwell

5-foot-8, 164 pounds

Yahoo Sports draft grade: 5.78 — potential starter

TL;DR scouting report: Minuscule, electric home-run threat whose size and limitations will complicate his evaluation and system fit

Games watched: Notre Dame (2019), Clemson (2019), Western Kentucky (2020), Virginia Tech (2020)

The skinny: A 3-star Rivals recruit as an “athlete” out of the Miami area, Chatarius “Tutu” Atwell converted from high school QB to college receiver with the Cardinals. Atwell played immediately as a freshman, starting two of 12 games in 2018 and catching 24 passes for 406 yards and two TDs. He experienced a breakout in 2019, leading the ACC in receiving yards (1,276) on 70 catches with 12 TDs, also averaging 21 yards on four punt returns. In 2020, Atwell caught 46 passes for 625 yards and seven TDs in nine games (seven starts), earning first-team all-conference honors his final two years. He opted out for the final game of the season and declared early for the 2021 draft.

Upside: Big-play threat every single time he touches the ball. Defenders must come with population to make sure he’s down. Wasn’t a huge tackle breaker, per se, but his electric speed and quickness typically made that point moot. Can shock defenders by hitting a third gear most of them don’t possess — varied speeds and made would-be tacklers look foolish at times.

Elite athletic traits — lightning in a bottle. Should test with outstanding numbers in the 40-yard dash, 3-cone drill and shuttle drills. Tremendous deep speed that can be used to dictate coverage and occupy safeties. Good luck catching him with the ball in his hands. Explosive burst to hit the corner like a rocket.

Highly productive over his final two seasons — nine 100-yard receiving games and 18 TDs grabs. Didn’t require high volume of targets to amass chunks of yards — averaged more than 10 yards per target in his career. Tracks the deep ball nicely and shows good body control to haul in off-target throws downfield.

Trick-play weapon. Has taken snaps under center — had a 33-yard TD pass in 2019. Can line up in the backfield and be used on jet sweeps and end arounds.

Suffered through inconsistent QB play in his college career. Got open deep plenty yet didn’t always see the ball.

Downside: Built like a welterweight — extremely small build with little mass. The list of players who have been great at that size isn’t long — small even by slot-receiver standards. Extremely thin with lean ankles. Didn't add much mass over three years in college. Might prove to be even smaller than listed height and weight.

Can’t run a full route tree. Limited usage — most of his targets were short or long, layups and three-pointers. Ineffective going over the middle to make plays in traffic. Likely resigned to a “gadget” role in the NFL.

Small hands. Dropped about one out of every 20 balls thrown his way. Won’t offer much, if anything, in contested situations — lacks the length and play strength to battle for 50-50 balls anywhere on the field. Had passes knocked away at the catch point.

Route discipline is not up to snuff. Must learn how to get off press coverage (if he’s even asked to do it). Likely will be a full-time slot/gadget. Could require creative offensive coordinator to manufacture touches.

Limited special-teams experience — only four punt returns, all in 2019. No kickoff experience. Likely won’t have a lot of utility on special-teams coverage units.

Best-suited destination: The team that drafts Atwell must have a defined plan for him. He’s likely never going to develop into a diverse, 65-snap receiver, so he must be unleashed in a calculated way to maximize his effectiveness. But with blurring speed and big-play ability, he’d be an asset in any offense that wants to mimic a fast-break pace like the Chiefs.

Did you know: The original “Tutu” was Chatarius’ father who played receiver at Minnesota and caught 171 passes (fourth-most in Golden Gophers history) for 2,640 yards (fourth-most) and 17 TDs (sixth-most). As a senior in 1997, the elder Atwell also ran back two kickoffs for touchdowns and threw a 31-yard TD pass.

Player comp: Not as gifted an all-around receiver/returner as, say, DeSean Jackson, Atwell looks like a supercharged version of a Taylor Gabriel or JaKeem Grant or perhaps similar to Broncos 2020 second-rounder KJ Hamler.

Expected draft range: Rounds 3 or 4

Louisville WR Tutu Atwell ran the 40-yard dash in an unofficial 4.32 seconds during Tuesday's pro day.

It is no secret that Atwell is one of the fastest players in this draft class. Perhaps some expected Atwell to crack the 4.30 mark, especially with this year's slightly inflated testing times, but a 4.32 is still absolutely flying. Atwell measured in at 5-foot-9 and 155 pounds, though, so it is clear he is terribly thin for the position and will have to really prove himself to be among the league's best deep threats to find a consistent role in the league. For what it is worth, Atwell's first testing run was clocked at a 4.42.

I swear to Jebus this draft class is the equivalent of a Volkswagen full of little clowns at the circus.  Every time I look at a new prospect he's smaller than my teenager.

Rams selected Louisville WR Tutu Atwell with the No. 57 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Atwell (5'8/155) first broke out with 70/1,276/12 as Louisville's primary slot receiver in 2019, leveraging his blazing 4.39 40-speed as a former track athlete to haul in the ninth-most deep catches (25) in college football over the past three years. Atwell averaged just 6.6 touches between every touchdown scored during that timespan. Albeit vastly undersized at the next level, 'Tutu' can quietly squat 460-lbs and bench press double his body weight, all the while keeping his elite agility (3.9-second short shuttle) intact. Overall, Atwell comps to Marquise Brown as a burner who can succeed both outside and from the slot. With the Rams' three-receiver sets already locked in, pint-sized Atwell can be brought along slowly.

Second-round WR Tutu Atwell expects to serve as the Rams' punt returner in 2021.

Atwell had extremely limited return experience in the ACC, handling just four punts in 2019. He never returned a kick. Nevertheless, the return game will probably be the quickest way for him to get on the field behind Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods and Van Jefferson. "It’ll actually help me," Atwell reasoned. "It would be a great spot for the team. I’m just excited and ready to take over the job and do what I have to do. ... It'll be a nice (demonstration of my) skill set to get back there and do what I do best." Atwell's blazing speed/quickness and under-sized frame certainly profile him as a natural in the return game. Atwell's No. 57 overall draft capital can't be completely ignored in Dynasty rookie drafts, but he's a fringe second-rounder behind a bevy of later-drafted wideouts who landed in better situations.

Rams placed WR Tutu Atwell and the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The season is a long way out so Atwell should have no problem rejoining the team before Week 1. However, he was going to be competing with Van Jefferson and DeSean Jackson for WR3 duties. The missed time could hurt his odds of earning a meaningful role as a rookie. Jackson projects to start the year as the third pass-catcher for Matthew Stafford with Jefferson backing him up and Atwell returning punts. With Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods already soaking up targets, Jackson is the only wideout beyond them worth drafting in all but the deepest of leagues.

Rams second-round WR Tutu Atwell suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the Week 8 win over the Texans.

Atwell needs surgery. He was the 57th overall pick in April's draft and played all of 10 offensive snaps as a rookie, getting the vast majority of his action on special teams as the Rams' return man. The second-rounder isn't looking likely to be a promising pick for the Rams.

Has there been some positive news about Atwell recently? Some of my dynasty leagues are going through a Free Agency bidding period and he has been getting some large $ thrown his way. He strikes me as a gadget guy like Tavon Austin, but others are snapping him up. Have I missed something?

i’m not really optimistic about any wide receiver on the Rams behind their top 2. And I’m not even that optimistic about Allen Robinson.

that said, Van Jefferson was pretty bad last year, so maybe the folks in your league are hedging that someone else might step up into the WR3 role?

I agree with this. I figure a gadget player would be utilized immediately by McVay and he couldn't even find a way to put him on the field. Return specialist at best.

To be fair about the bolded, he did suffer a season-ending shoulder injury week 8, but he didn't really use him weeks 1-7 either so you have a good point.

Looks to be relegated to 4th in the WR pecking order.

Tutu by fourfour, if you will.

ESPN's Sarah Barshop named WR Tutu Atwell as her offseason standout for the Rams.

Matthew Stafford said he's noticed that "everything" Atwell does "seems to be that much more intentional," earlier this offseason. Atwell is blocked behind Cooper Kupp, Allen Robinson, and Van Jefferson before we even get into the possibility of Odell Beckham coming back to the Rams, but he should remain on the dynasty radar and still has some outs to fantasy relevancy this season.

The Athletic's Jordan Rodrigue reports Tutu Atwell "has bought in more to the behind-the-scenes work required of his position over the last few weeks."

Atwell has emerged as a top option in the post-Cooper Kupp LA passing offense, seeing 14 targets over the past two weeks as something of a gadget player and a blazing fast -- if tiny -- downfield threat. The second-year wideout also has six rushes in those two games. Used across the formation in recent outings, Atwell in Week 14 against the Raiders ran 63 percent of his routes from the slot. His 63 percent route rate is a bit concerning, however. Atwell can be treated as a WR4 in Week 15 against the Packers.

Rams head coach Sean McVay said Tutu Atwell will have a role in the team's passing offense this season.

McVay had high praise for Atwell during and after the Rams' mandatory minicamp. "If last year taught us anything, you got to be ready for contingency plans," McVay said. "[Atwell] is a guy that's going to have a role for us [because of] his ability to move around and make sure that we don't have to have certain guys play every single snap. … He's a nice complement to some of the other guys that we have, and so I'm really pleased with what he's done." Atwell in 2022 took on more snaps and routes in the LA offense after a lost rookie campaign. The speedy, diminutive wideout had 298 yards and a touchdown on 18 receptions, mostly in the season's final five games. He'll profile as LA's best downfield threat this season, but will be frustrating for fantasy purposes.

Tutu Atwell caught 6-of-8 targets for 119 yards in the Rams’ Week 1 win over the Seahawks.

Atwell tied rookie Puka Nacua for a team-high in receiving yards, though Nacua earned seven more targets than him. Nacua was close to the line of scrimmage while Atwell saw a mix of short and deep throws. With Cooper Kupp out for at least three more weeks, Atwell looks poised for FLEX-worthy numbers for the remainder of the month. He will attempt to replicate this performance in Week 2 against the 49ers.

Tutu Atwell lead all Rams players with 75 snaps in the team’s Week 2 loss to the 49ers.

The 75 snaps for Atwell marks a new career-high for the former second-round pick, who has been eased into the NFL game. Atwell has seen 17 targets through the Rams’ first two contests, and has a solid 196 yards on 13 reception. While clearly behind rookie Puka Nacua in the target order, Atwell’s week-to-week target output is enough to make him a high-upside WR3 who could very easily provide a splash week for fantasy managers. Atwell will have a chance to continue his hot start in Week 3 against the Bengals.

When (if) Kupp comes back, I believe Tutu is the one who is going to see less work. He and Kupp both operate out of the slot and Puka is a better, bigger blocker.

Plan accordingly.

If Kupp comes back I expect Jefferson to be the odd man out. The Rams love Tutu in motion and running deep routes to create NFL records for other receivers.

I think "Will he have a role in the offense?" and "Will he be startable in fantasy?" are two very different questions.

If Kupp comes back at full strength and Puca keeps up his pace, it would be hard to imagine Tutu being a reliable fantasy starter. But of course neither of those things are guaranteed

This guy is the same age and size as Tank Dell. How would we feel about him if he stayed in college 2 more years and was doing this as a rookie?

Plus he was a second round pick so McVay is invested in him. Apparently part of the problem was he couldn't get off the line and this year McVay is putting him in motion more.

Atwell, Dell and Flowers all look like legit fantasy assets. I guess I have to abandon my rule to never draft sub 190-pound receivers. I'm glad they can roam around the middle without getting obliterated now.

My line had been 175, but yes it's looking like minimum weights are a bad idea now.

I'm big on Tutu. He's got that track speed and Stafford loves ripping it downfield. Less concerned about him losing volume with his speed than I am Puka.

Would rather have Puka of course, which I think helps Tutu's value. Like the Anquan Boldin to Larry Fitzgerald.

Plus, I love WR 3rd year breakout. He's averaging 5-6 catches for 82 yards a game (17 for 246) in Puka's shadow. He's only on pace for 1,394 yards on 85 to 102 catches.

Which normally, would generate a ton of buzz but that just goes to show how ridiculous Puka has been.

Solid WR3 this week vs Steelers or relegation to decoy?

Their DBs are pretty average so maybe there's a chance he gets some big plays. Kupp and Puka will eat the target shares but anyone playing Tutu with confidence?

In 16 man league with 8 byes on my roster this week. I may have to play him because I have no other choice!! It’s down to him or Jauan Jennings if Deebo is out. Problem is, I may not have confirmation Deebo is out until Monday.

Without their main RBs I think the Rams are gonna air it out. Not sure how that will shake out for Tutu but passing game should be seeing more action as a whole.
