NBA Top Shot Thread - kind of like sports card + crypto, seems money to be made.... (1 Viewer)

Oh man, missed it. :sadbanana: Didn't get an email notification like I did for other packs.
There is some message that says for standard drops they will give at least 8 hours notice via email, etc.  For these tests, they are saying they'll just be pop ups.  I saw it on Twitter and thought it was a joke but checked anyways.  Still ended up 100k+ in line.

Yeah. The Lebron no look 3 was over $2000 at one point, now it’s $600
Yep. Some of these have really taken a huge hit.

I think their withdrawal issues/procedure have really turned a lot of people off......particularly the marketplace. They want to boast how much their raking in.....then they can get people to expedite the withdrawal process sooner. There's always going to be a market for unknown packs.

If they want to hide behind the whole "collector" nonsense......then give them away for free   And stop running as a money making business.......no reason to limit others from doing the same.

I’ll be honest, not a big believer in these NFTs. I see it as a place to buy stuff for future virtual worlds/games but just as a simple purchase. People paying $500k for a virtual house are insane or have so much Ethereum rolling around that they don’t know what to do with it or the are in on it so to speak. There’s just 0 real uniqueness because there’s so much product. The people who make money are the people who run the market and sold the stuff. Investing in NBA highlights? Just assume there’s 1 highlight a game for each team and 2000 “cards” per highlight. That’s 5 million “cards” per season. Throw in special additions, more highlights per game, other sports, historic highlights and you are talking a glut in just one year.

Maybe I’m missing something but it’s basically virtual cards and the sucky part is that it’s not even as exclusive because in real cards there is a notion of grading so some are better than others.

Oh well, not surprised to see values falling barely over a month into this thread.
Oh, I agree. It doesn't really make sense, but neither do a lot of collectable markets to me. I'm not a fan of bitcoin in general and a lot of the NFT craze is just advertising IMO.

This one is pretty fascinating to watch for NBA fans and there is more money in my dapper account than I've put in (which isn't much)....if I can ever withdraw it.

I completed the "Welcome to the All-Star Family Challenge" which ended yesterday.  I got the Mike Conley moment below as a reward.  This is the first card where the player commentates his own highlight:  Mike Conley card

I'm a little surprised there are only 6,688 of this card since all the cards needed were 35k common cards.  I should probably sell it before they issue more but not sure yet.

I thought about doing this one but I'm down so much that I figured I should just buy more physical sports cards, especially since my daughter is getting into the hobby.

It's pretty cool that they got him to do the audio on it, I'd keep it and may try to buy one still lol.

I hear you, I think I'm done depositing Dapper funds as well.  That's cool your daughter is getting into collecting cards!

Hopefully Conley's commentary will be the start of a trend, and more NBA players will want to get involved going forward!

Yeah I'm done too lol. I've got about $2,500 in and was happy with my moments until recently haha. I've been through this with crypto so maybe if I wait long enough I'll come out ahead.

It definitely seems like some of them are collecting so I would imagine they'd want to partner too. I'm guessing Herro will be next.

Those challenge rewards don't lock (new mints) when the challenge ends?  How will there ever be more than 6688?

The more expensive challenges that do lock say something like "Shoot your shot and complete this Challenge to snag this rare, never-to-be-sold-in-packs Moment."  I didn't see that comment on this challenge, and the card says 6688+ CC. The cards that are closed don't have the "+" and I think are all at least LE (limited edition).

I could be wrong, but that leads me to believe this was the 1st issue of this card, and it may be in some future packs.

Yeah, I see what you're saying now and agree.  Wow, I thought all the rewards were LE never to be minted again.  I think that would be important to know up front since there are multiple ways to accurately see how many people are completing challenges real time.

If you sell the Conley for lowest ask, I think it's in the $140's now, do you at least get out ahead?  I see the 5 moments needed dropped quite a bit.

I did that on some other cards and did pretty well.  I don't think there will be any more at least until another "Seeing Stars" pack is released, but I have no idea how many more they'll issue, maybe enough to get it up to 10k like the other Seeing Stars cards?  Hopefully that would be the max.  My one hesitation is that I feel like this is a unique moment, and even if it becomes the norm that players do their own commentary on their moment, this will always be the first.  Plus, my serial # indicates it was part of the first issue of the card.  Not sure how much value that would hold in the future, but I would think some?

The price is all over the place on this one so far.  As soon as the card was issued yesterday, I jumped on the MP and I saw one for $75.  A few hours later, the lowest was $225, and right now $144.  If it gets back over $200 it may be tough not to sell though.

I'm 0/19 over the last day trying to get a card using that token site as soon as the view refreshes.  And that only includes the times I got all the way to the Dapper page and then back to the Top Shot site only to see the transaction fail.  There are other instances where I don't even get to Dapper.  I don't think this level of failure is possible without bots scooping the best values immediately after they are posted.

Without a doubt.

I've refreshed Topshot and that site simultaneously on 2 different PCs, they never even show available on the topshot marketplace from my experience.

I've seen many trying to flip right away on that site.   There was a rarer type DeAndre Jordan card that was getting reduced $10 in price every couple minutes. Obviously no one was interested because Deandre Jordan is trash.

Lebron no look 3 down to $469, another $150 in the last two days and the huge pack dispersal hasn’t happened yet.
This.

I've been monitoring some other moments and they've completely crashed in value as well. They'll have to fall quite a bit more before I may consider jumping in. More likely if I do, likely will holding off til offseason where I think they'll fall off even more. Perhaps they can get their withdrawal system under control and just improve the site in general. You can only hide behind being in beta for so long.

Yeah, I'm making my exit move. Not completely, but I'm selling all my highest value cards. I'll keep 3 little crap cards just in case they have the moment requirements for future drops, but I'm done. The only way to play this is sell any card with value quickly, and pray you can hit the lotto and win a rare/200 or rarer card to really make a big payoff.

This is going to end badly for those heavily invested. I'm leaving with more than I came in, so that's good enough for me.

Opened my pack and got a pretty amazing Anthony Edwards dunk that has a lowest ask of $53.00. I am going to hang onto it--I mean I have a whole $18.00 wrapped up in 6 cards. I bought physical packs of this year's Hoops and paid $19.00 a pack.

You can tell the Top Shot market is drastically constricting. It will be interesting to see where it goes.

This prompted me to look for my pack which was supposed to be coming a few days ago. It's here now...

1) Iguodola alley oop.

2) Chris Paul fadeaway baseline jumper...

...and my browser crashed before it even finished showing that clip

I got a Lamelo Ball layup, 16182/35k, some white guy from the Cavs blocking a shot and Gary Harris dunk.

I assume I can get my 9 bucks back out of that Lamelo.

Decided, for the near term, not to open my new pack.  The MP is depressed as it is, so I wouldn't be selling anything from the pack anyways.  I also got it well after other people which is sort of a flipper's disadvantage.

I'm bearish overall, but I do think the bigger names, low serials, and unopened packs of Series 1 & 2 will increase in value over time (especially when new customers are allowed in).  Series 3 will be way oversaturated in comparison.  Not sure what will happen with badged cards of ordinary players.

This weekend I grabbed a couple commons on the cheap, Anthony Davis (with Lebron getting the assist) and Ben Simmons, and a $4 Hunter, to get my collection up to 5 moments and 2 unopened packs.  I'll add more cheap stars if I see them.

Love paying a 1000 dollars for a video highlight of Mo Bamba getting his shot blocked by somebody 7 inches shorter than him.

I mean if I met the requirements I'd probably be throwing my hat in the ring for a stupid $999 pack. You probably make money on it, although there are definitely some potential stinkers in there.

Definitely trying for the $999 packs. So far if you land a pack it’s free money. I don’t see why this will be different.

I wonder if their strategy isn’t getting new Top Shot members as much as monetizing the hell out of the existing, engaged ones. I mean sure they’ll try and get new customers, but that might not be the right measure of success for them.

Yep. "We want COLLECTORS!!"

.....Too bad so sad you're gonna be a collector anyway because we won't let you withdraw your money!!

My Gary Harris ‘card’ sold for 8 bucks, essentially getting me my money back  💰
Congrats GB.

Money should be available -- maybe -- to withdraw by December.

Lol I’ll try to keep the lights on till then.

I can see how this is addicting. I don’t understand it and it’s very dumb but it can be fun I guess. At 9 bucks a pack. Not a grand.

I dunno how you can spend a grand on a pack not knowing if you can ever cash that money out, seriously. I’m in on these for 10-20 a pack though.
The NBA is a partner in this, and Dapper just announced a $300M funding round that values them well over a billion. This isn’t some internet casino run out of some guy’s hut in the Caribbean. The risk of them vanishing overnight with everyone’s money seems quite small.

(Aside: Lots of these same conversations and criticisms of NFTs and these Topshots sound eerily similar to what people said about Bitcoin 5 years ago).

Yeah, you have to be pretty heavily invested already (or got in on the cheap early on) to get any of these $999 packs:

this drop will only be available to select accounts that met specific requirements as of Sunday, April 11 at 3 PM PDT.

Qualifying collectors must have met at least one of the following criteria:

  • Collector held at least 15 Moments at time of snapshot OR
  • Collector held at least two rare Moments at time of snapshot OR
  • Collector held at least one legendary Moment at time of snapshot
Qualifying collectors must maintain their eligibility through to the drop itself.
I'd update you on my withdraw status but I can't even log in to my Dapper to see if I can withdraw bc it won't text me the verification code. :lmao:

I’m in the drop. Seems like it’s hard to go wrong with packs but I majorly screwed up with buying moments too soon lol. I think we’re early here but feels like buying Bitcoin in 2017 lol. I just gotta wait four years to get rich, right?
