Capitalism wins again - Countries and Continents begging the US for Vaccines (1 Viewer)

I always believe in capitalism. But in this case- are you absolutely sure that the companies that developed the vaccine received no government help whatsoever?

And if it’s capitalism that should be celebrated then why are these countries asking our government for help? Why aren’t they contacting the companies directly?

Is this rhetorical

I'm gonna stop you right there...you support the party where 60% of the primary voters voted for open socialists (bernie/Warren)

Your vote doesn't support the notion that you believe in capitalism.
The current Republican Party believes in tariffs, is anti-immigration, pro-nationalist. They believe in government support of oil and coal and other large industries. They also believe in interfering in personal freedoms in a way I find incompatible with a libertarian, pro-capitalist perspective.

I believe in capitalism with the government stepping in when the free market won’t suffice-would call myself, in general, an old style, pro-New Deal and Great Society Democrat. I am centrist and pro-business on most issues. I am no socialist and I strongly dispute your implication that the Democratic Party is pro-socialist. If it was, Joe Biden would never have been our nominee.

He's the POTUS.  His administration is handling the vaccination distribution.
But my understanding is, and I could be wrong, it isn't about distribution issues, it's about actually GETTING the vaccines that the EU is struggling with.  The US went all in early and bought tons of them.

Can you imagine Fauci leading a government run lab and facility trying to make a vaccine?
Fauci jumped the shark bout 6 months ago.  Fuaci has contridicted himself and flip flopped so much it is hard to believe anything he says anymore.

And yet he got the most votes in the history of presidential elections. Seems pep rallies, on top of being a bad idea during a pandemic, weren’t too necessary.
COVID was good for something.  As far as most votes though Trump got 5 million more votes than Obama did in his best year and second most in history which is a little frightening.  So I take that with a grain of salt.

Yeah I was being a little tongue in cheek there. The next Prez will probably have the most votes ever.

Biden smoked Trump is the important takeaway.

Which is the "capitalism" component to this exactly?

The part where the government is responsible for the distribution?  Government distributing to other governments must be the ultimate in this version of "capitalism".
The part where the government is responsible for the funding of the research?
The part where the government has it's hands in the funding for the production?

Looks like TripItUp continues to be flummoxed by what the term "capitalism" actually is/means.  It's either that or a fishing trip right?  Can't be a fishing trip can it?  Na...he'd never do that

Weird how they didn’t get Covid but like everyone in Trump’s world did  :coffee:
Hard to get it in the basement.    Trump got it before vaccine.   Biden riding Mr trumps coattails.    Did you somehow miss when trumps vaccine was released?    Glad to jog  your memory.

Being “in the basement” and not jamming people into pep rallies seemed both smart and effective.

Ok.   People see it differently.    But Biden wanted vaccinate 100,000,000 people in 100 days.  Which he was lauded for.

Trump left office only vaccinating 1,000,000 a day.

Biden passed that in like 50 days so we should laud him for that.
We are at just over 80mm.   For first jabs

44mm. Fully vaccinated.    Looks like trump set him up for a success.   But he should be recognized  for front running.     And his messing up the souther border is a scandal.   Maybe he took over a mess.   But it wasn't this mess.   This mess is brand new.   And it's on him.

I'll give him props for screwing up so quickly.   Much quickerly and massively than Trump did.

He is doing the a job.  But I didn't expect him to be the Mulky's of presidents.

It is so cute when supporters of the GOP claim they are pro-capitalist.  Trump spent more money than any president in history during an economic boom.  Massive subsidies to all sorts of industries that control the senate GOP caucus.

But, capitalism!
I love posts that start with "it is so cute" - please everyone bring more of that, i enjoy it.

Wait Mexico/Europe aren't capitalist?

And didn't the US Government give Moderna $1 billion in research aid to develop the vaccine?

Him and vp Harris both got the vaccine and they are the only two in a room and they are still wearing masks.    They are saying the vaccine  doesn't work.    Pitiful.
No, they are saying "hey, until everyone here in this room is vaccinated, it is a good idea to keep wearing a mask".

I know, the horror of an administration willing to sacrifice a tiny bit for the greater good

We hit 100 million shots last week.

Game, set, match for capitalism?
What the end game of capitalism?  Extend it out 2000 years.  How does it not end up with Oligarchs controlling every single thing.  Or taken even further, how does it not end up with one person controlling everything?

Who really cares?  Give Trump credit for investing in "Warp Speed" and getting the vaccine out in record time.  Give Biden credit for trying to get distribution out to the people.   Think of it as Trump being the brewmaster creating a good brew, and Joe driving the beer truck getting the brew to the people who want it. Need both of them.

They aren't true Alphas like the last guy. ;)

That question seems to takes some things for granted that aren't obvious.

I don't believe there is a consensus among economists (or political theorists, etc.) that capitalism would lead to oligarchs controlling every single thing. That assumption probably needs some supporting legwork.

Its almost like you cant read.

Didn't it take a concerted economic effort to incentivize the vaccine at the government level and weren't command economy tactics basically used to help fund the immediate R&D into the vaccine to make the vaccine profitable for the corporations to come up with? Now, one could argue that the previous capital accrued by these companies allowed them to be in a business position to work on a vaccine -- and that would be the most fair and compelling argument for capitalism in this instance -- but weren't there command instruments being used here? The creation and distribution of the vaccine, not to mention its price (nothing), seems like a very large, temporary government takeover of the vaccine sector.

Or am I dreaming?

Over a thousand years?   Pure capitalism? Whatever that means.  Assuming humans still existed, and capitalism reigned, who do you think would control “every single thing”?

What is taken for granted?

It’s the same thing Christians have done for years - equating the right with Christianity.  Equating the right with capitalism without many true capitalist policies.

I guess I thought it was a pretty safe assumption.  If you have 10 teams and they keep playing games where the loser goes out of business, eventually there will only be one team left right?  At least that's how it seems to me theoretically.

Agreed.  Both this and "socialism" seems to simply be code for "what I like/don't like" Pretty safe to say, the lack of response to this is deafening yet predictable.

The government buying and distributing hundreds of millions of doses of vaccines to people who don't have to pay to receive it--capitalism at its finest.

That they also had a large hand in funding....don't forget that part.  It's the trifecta of "capitalism"

Everybody would individually control their own stuff. I view this as a weird question, like asking: if physics continues to be true a thousand years from now, won't everyone fall off the earth because it's spinning so fast?
