Are Dems starting to lose the Centrist Democrats? (1 Viewer)

There was no republican health plan (well, there was Romneycare), There was no republican infrastructure plan. etc etc.  When the right had the wheel all they could pass was a tax cut.  There were no policies we could have a robust debate about, it was "hey free college for everyone sucks", but no clear plan.
I'd love to hear the GOP healthcare plan, infrastructure plan, and immigration reform. Unfortunately only the Dems have offered anything tangible. The GOP needs to give me something to consider. Real policy. Otherwise, why should I vote for them, they're against everything.

They haven’t had a platform in 4 years that wasn’t “own the libs.”

His approval rating says otherwise.

It seems that Biden's focus has been solely about going after low hanging fruit to appease centrists.  Ensuring basic voting rights is very popular.  The stimulus plan was very popular.  Investing in infrastructure is very popular.  Prosecuting the Jan. 6 rioters is very popular.  Closing gun loopholes is very popular.  Expanding access to vaccines is very popular.  The stock market is up substantially.

Fox News and the Twitterverse are certainly crowing about how we are descending into communism, but that is just false propaganda.

This will be the problem with any R - escaping the shadow of Trump.
Pretty much.   The thing that really sucks is that Trump being Trump...he's not going to pick a candidate who has the potential to outshine/out Alpha him......so we're going to be left with a cycle or two of top ticket boot lickers; candidates who have to play the cuck to Trump to get his support.

This is left. Too left for me. I think legalizing all drugs is blind to the evils many contribute to society. I think that "free" higher education is problematic because the more federal money that goes into the system, the more bloated it becomes. While I agree with criminal justice reform, I am in favor of capital punishment and longer sentences for some crimes.

I'd sign up in a minute for the above if the alternative was a ban on abortions, a ban on immigration and inaction on climate change.
I don't think any of these things are being discussed seriously by the democratic party besides maybe universal healthcare.  Even then the democrats chose Biden as their nominee, who was the furthest right on this issue of all the candidates.

I’ve voted R before.  I voted W twice and honestly I would have voted for Jeb or even 2015 Marco Rubio over Hilary. That ship sailed so far off course now. I’m shocked that Republicans didn’t take Trump’s one term as a huge flashing sign to steer away from him.

I hear all this criticism of Biden's infrastructure plan and I think, ok give me an alternative. Don't just block this one, debate it, amend it, show me YOUR plan to contrast with it. They may have a point, but I'd never know it because I haven't seen it.

I think it has been longer than 4 years.
Fair enough but it went into super overdrive cokehead reality tv mode at that point. I overlooked and laughed at it because I didn’t take the possibility of Trump seriously until 11pm on election night and even then I thought something still might change. That result was a huge wake up call to how different the Republican party in reality to what I viewed it.

I consider myself middle of the road in many areas, but I also know I’ll never vote R again unless there’s a massive house cleaning.

I heard there there was a big, beautiful healthcare plan* from the Republicans.

*must commit to recurring "donations" to the Trump re-election campaign to see it

Yes, Centrist voters that may be up for grabs,
I was hoping for more context. Not from you; from them. I get that it's difficult though. Cause centrist casts such a wide net and the pools that make it up are constantly changing. And I think in our system ultimately that is part of the 'problem.' The Trump cult and the progressive wing are both loud and like-minded, so it's easier to start there then see how much you can veer from it without losing them.

Many more layers to it than this and it depends state-to-state/county-to-county, but from 30,000 feet I think our current government makeup (federal level) exists because progressives generally showed a willingness to go along with (not support) a democratic agenda whereas the Trump cult vilified anyone that didn't fall in line. Since it's pretty much been more of the same in the 3+ months since January 6th I expect more of the same, but our society has shown time & time again we have a very short memory so that can change in an instant. I don't think many that voted for this are happy about any of it though. Progressives get crumbs, fiscal conservatives/(reasonable!) libertarian types (hi) get nothing, and I think it's fair to characterize those in between as unsatisfied...but I think this was the expectation. Cause this is a 2 party system and I think this is a substantial improvement over the alternative. Til it changes it's really no more complicated than that.

I have fault with this logic and I always have.  Just because the dems have introduced something doesn't automatically make it good because it has been introduced and the republicans have not.  That's just weak logic.

Candidly, this is a great way to govern. ETA, if we combine it with someone that is willing to leverage the political system masterfully, then we could get this #### show back on track.

Super weak.  If you introduce the only pile of #### it is still, after all, a pile of ####.  No one likes a pile of ####.  And the simple fact it's the only pile of #### doesn't mean it's the best pile of #### ever either.

OK, give me the GOP alternative. I've seen the Dems plans, give me a reason to consider a GOP candidate besides "I'm against what their planning". The GOP had 2 years of total control. Where's their healthcare plan? Their infrastructure plan? Give me something besides keeping people out.

Unless the GOP gives me an alternative, it is the best I have to consider.

You know what's even weaker? Having no plan.

Negative.  Sounds like you'd rather have a pile of #### because you think it's your only choice.  It's not.  You have two choices:  the pile of #### in front of you or NOT the pile of #### in front of you.

At least they’re trying.  I’d rather someone try and fix a hole in the wall even if they don’t have all the materials than just decide it’s better kick a larger hole in the wall, set the wall on fire, and then make fun of the person trying to fix it.

I don't think there is any plausible outcome other than their internal polling showed that they need the Trump cult to win. This left the party with two options - placate them and do what's necessary to maximize wins right now or shove them off the plank and accept losses now then reform for later.

Something needs to be done about our healthcare, whether you like the Dem proposals or not. Our prices are still skyrocketing. We desperately need infrastructure plans. Show me the GOP plan. Doing nothing is not an option any longer.

I think you are missing the point.  I'm saying, just because the republicans have not offered a plan, that does not automatically make the democratic proposal the one to choose. It could be lousy as well.

I don't see it that way, but fair enough.

Easy to throw stones when you have nothing to offer. If the Dems were pulling that move you’d hear about the do nothing democrats 24/7.

Right now, the Dem's plan is the only one on the table. Why can't the GOP give me an alternative? Show me a reason to vote GOP besides "Dems bad".

No ones throwing stones.  Just saying that just because you're offered the only choice at the moment doesn't mean you have to accept it because it's still a TERRIBLE choice.  Like Obamacare.

Ok..I'm going to try this a third time.  After I repeat myself again, I'm gonna move on.

JUST cause the democrats have proposed an infrastructure bill and the republicans have not, it does NOT automatically mean the democrat plan is an automatic yes....At least not to me.  I cant say the same thing 4 times so that's it for me on this.

I think what is being said is the Republicans do have a plan, it’s a plan to denigrate whatever Democrats propose. That’s not productive. Instead of coming up with anything of substance, they just ##### and moan.  I keep hearing about these plans. Trump had all these plans for healthcare, he was just never ready to talk about them. It was complete garbage, a shell game.

Edit to add: What do republicans stand for now, anyway?  Police?  No they killed one on the 6th.  Military?  No their savior called them losers?  The deficit?  Nope..  All the right has right now is voter suppression and guns.
Family values.

I never said it was an automatic yes. We used to have a functioning government where a bill was introduced then we had bi-partisan compromise and amendments to get something passed. OK, the Dems infrastructure bill has flaws. Now we need to work to improve it. We need Republicans to offer solutions too.

As I said, the GOP had 2 years to get infrastructure done. It didn't happen because they were focused on a wall that even Republicans didn't want to fund and a tax break. No healthcare, no infrastructure, no real immigration reform. GOP needs to present a real platform besides guns, God and owning the libs.

Then we are agreed.  Not an automatic yes.   Good

Can’t tell if you’re joking or not, but if the leader of your party spends his time banging porn stars while his 3rd wife is pregnant, you don’t get to play the family values card.
Check your sarcasm meter. It's broken.

What could demonstrate a dedication to family values more than having three families?  That is like triple my family values.
Hmmm..Well based on the % of single family homes in the black community(which we all know vote mostly democrat) I' not seeing a strong dedication to family values with that party either.

Seems family values as a whole ha been tossed out the window entirely by both parties.

I always thought it was weird when Romney tried to attack Obamacare, despite how closely it resembled his own health care bill. There is plenty of space to criticize the fiscal policies of democrats, but you have to articulate a serious alternative. IMO, the GOP hasn't really been able to do that since about that time.

Family values was a BS made-up term. Regardless, your post is borderline racist at best, and at worst...  you can decide.

I respect that completely.
Good, so we are on to something.  I'd love to see a well thought out plan by the right for these things.  I'd likely disagree with them, but at least it opens the door to negotiation.

(I think the right had the beginnings of an infrastructure plan that was basically "give money to our donors to fix our infrastructure" It never went any further than that and I' still want to see it bc at least it would let me know what they thought was important)

Biden is a good placeholder and palette-cleanser, but he's at least 10 years too old for the job and while having the country on autopilot is fine compared to the last guy, it's not ideal.  Romney would mark a return to having a normal president again.
Odd take considering Mitt Romnney will turn 78 years old shortly after taking office

I get that, but you have to admit that Biden really does seem to be past his expiration date in a way that's not really the case for people like Romney, Warren, and probably Sanders.  And I say that as somebody who gets up everyday happy that Biden won the primaries and general.
