Dynasty & Redraft: TE Tim Tebow, Jaguars (1 Viewer)

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports free agent QB Tim Tebow has converted to tight end and worked out for the Jaguars.

It is 33-year-old Tebow's latest flight of fancy after he spent four years in the New York Mets' minor league system, for some reason. Signing with the Jaguars would reunite Tebow with Urban Meyer, of course, but it has been six years since he played as much as a padless offseason rep. For years, people inside the league suggested that Tebow switch to tight end, but the former Heisman Trophy winner and first-round pick also resisted the move. Now it is quite simply too late. If Tebow gets a spot on the Jags' 90-man roster, it will be nearly impossible to convert it into a 53-man spot.

NBC Sports' Peter King reports the Jaguars could sign Tim Tebow as a backup tight end.

After flaming out of the NFL in 2012, Tebow continues to get comeback chances. To be signed as a backup tight end in the NFL's worst tight end group is, well, something. King said Jacksonville "will wait till after this weekend’s rookie mini-camp to assess their roster and maybe see how much they think they can get in the overall blocking/receiving from fifth-round tight end Luke Farrell of Ohio State." Farrell was a blocking tight end at OSU, where he caught 12 passes in his final 22 collegiate games. Tebow's name recognition and college-era fame in central and northern Florida will draw some fantasy managers' attention this summer. The 33-year-old converted tight end is a long way from fantasy relevance though.

Jaguars signed TE Tim Tebow to a one-year contract.

The deal isn't 'official' just yet but will be in the next week or so. Tebow, 33, hasn't played in a regular-season game in nine years and will be attempting to change positions once he does make it to camp. It's another wacky (albeit fun) move that brings Meyer's tenure into question after the organization also added a first-round running back and drafted multiple injured players. There is no competition among Jacksonville's tight ends if Tebow does somehow sneak onto the 53-man roster.

man, Meyer is so bad

This is so dumb, and when you factor in how poorly they drafted, yikes
  I thought their draft was decent, above average anyway.

But yeah, there's no good reason to bring TT in. Other than maybe you want to mentor Trevor to read his bible.

The Florida Times-Union's Gene Frenette said for Tim Tebow to make the Jaguars' roster, he'll "undoubtedly" take on a role besides tight end.

Frenette, a longtime columnist who has covered the Jags, said "it's highly doubtful Tebow would be used exclusively as a tight end. Any shot he has to make Jaguars roster will undoubtedly involve another role as well." What this means is anyone's guess until we get into training camp and the preseason. The team using the big-bodied Tebow as a goal line bulldozer is certainly within the range of outcomes though. Such a role would be a downer for everyone in the Jacksonville offense -- Trevor Lawrence and the team's running backs in particular. Tebow functioned as the Broncos' primary goal line ball carrier during his short run as the team's quarterback -- scoring 12 rushing TDs in 14 regular season starts -- following years of ramming in short touchdowns at the University of Florida. Tebow touchdowns could be the most universally tilting experience for fantasy managers this season.

Yeah thats my point. its decent or slightly above average when you include the TLaw pick...

The ETN pick is unforgivably bad. Holes everywhere on that team, and they go RB. Also allegedly Meyer wanted Toney. Which is also not a good prospect or a need really.

Drafted a few guys coming off knee injuries. How many times did that work out for you in SF Baalke?

We disagree on the severity there, but I do agree that I sure wouldn't have made it. Probably would have gone newsome, but they sort of made up for that with Campbell.

Then again, my team took a DB with a broken back and didn't play last year.

It's the perfect opportunity for Tebow to start his coaching career. He is close to the end of being to play sports for anyone on any level.  Is he going to start at TE and run routes and block on 60 snaps a game? I doubt it but he might be able to be a reserve TE or someone that isn't going to fill the stats much but can be used at times in the red zone if and when Jax approaches the end zone which I am having my doubts the more Meyer makes moves.

Tebow should use this opportunity to get himself established as a potential future coach, the guy can be very inspiring and if he can get a grapple on coaching and teaching, think he might have a future in that at some point. I honestly thought he might have wanted to do that already when he was no longer a viable NFL QB.

unforgivably bad is a bit hyperbolic, but the talent at other positions of need that were on the board there mad much more sense. I find it hard to believe that even if they were drafting BPA that ETN was the pick there, but maybe for them he was. Just strange strategy to have wanted Toney who is a gadget player and presumably his Percy Harvin/Curtis Samuel type role player, and then take ETN as a consolation. They pass on a couple corners at 25 to take a corner at 33 who has played 3 years and has 1 int. Pass on Friermuth 2x in the 2nd, just to sign tebow who wont make the opening day roster. As well as a couple guys who might red shirt if the injury doesnt come along well enough. Very confusing

Best case scenario is TT is the taysom hill of Jax. Which would be fine, if Urban Meyer was Sean Payton

Agree, horrible teacher BUT Tebow gets a chance to get back into the swing of the NFL, he will see many teams on the road and talk/shake hands with many future coaches and I'm sure he has relationships but he has been out of the NFL for many years now and a return, even 1 year as an ambassador of sorts could be just what he needs and don't be surprised if he doesn't go into coaching, I could see him in the front office of most NFL teams, there's a dozen different things he could do and he has a charming personality to a lot of people especially those rooted in their Christianity, he connects with all those folks. He could be invaluable to an organization depending on what they want and what he hopes to achieve.

Don't underestimate Tebow and his ability to generate interest. The Jags are horrible in general and could use a guy like Tebow out in front for their fan base. I can tell you that Tim Tebow would get as big an ovation or cheer Week 1 in Jacksonville as their new golden boy Trevor Lawrence, that's the truth in Florida.

Tim Tebow would have been, at minimum, my second or third string QB for the past ten years.

Give him a great defense, good line/strong running game and he would win you games. You guys underestimate leadership and toughness at the QB position.

This philosophy works for almost all QBs but teams are built so piss- poorly.

I don’t get why people are getting so bent out of shape over this. If they sign him, it will likely be on a dirt cheap / league minimum deal to get added to the 90 man roster. The likelihood he makes the opening day roster is exceedingly remote, and the chances he makes a contribution are minuscule.

New England went through this exercise 8 years ago. I can’t see a 34 year old switching positions after not playing for 8 years and making an NFL roster. Like the other tryouts Tebow had, this will be another footnote to an already footnote heavy career.

All the power to him.

I wonder why...it's astonishing it has even risen to this point. Couldn't they hire Tebow as an Asst Coach to the Asst Coaches and just have him in the building if he is that vital?

Some Jags fans or some with Jags fantasy assets might be bent out of shape. Others might just think this isn't something you subject your team to if you're serious about installing a new culture. Setting aside the optics, you're entirely correct - cheap, low risk, minimal chance of making the final roster etc. You can't set aside the optics though and those are pure Barnum & Bailey. If I was a player coming into work and see Tebow with this big media scrum around him, I wouldn't think "Wow! Tim Tebow"! I would roll my eyes and worry that my boss might be adding a little too much "Irish" to his coffee...

Tim Tebow officially signed his one-year contract with the Jaguars.

Tebow, 33, hasn't played in a regular-season game in nine years but will reportedly "take on a role besides tight end" assuming he makes the team's roster out of camp. Having previously bruised his way for 12 rushing scores in 14 regular season starts as Denver's starting quarterback, it's possible Urban Meyer views his friend/new weapon as a versatile tool inside the five-yard line. Although there's skepticism Tebow can even make the final roster at his age, run-blocking TE Chris Manhertz is the only competition for him in the room.

I again place my stake in the ground that Tebow won't make the Opening Day roster. Without knowing the terms of his contract, it's hard to tell how committed the Jags are to keeping him. I would guess it's a one year deal for close to the league minimum with little to no guaranteed money. But it will keep Tebow and the team in the eye of the media for awhile and keep both of their brands trending for a little while.

haha you are REALLY anti-Jacksonville this year! :P
FTR: MoP is NOT anti-Jax, not the fans or the team itself. Not a fan of the hire and would prefer they avoid guys like him when they have a franchise QB at their fingertips, they should have a state of the art offense minded guy from the NFL ranks and at $12M a season that they flashed for Meyer, that should have gotten them a F2F meeting with almost any OC in the league. My opinion.

Seems like if a team was desperate to improve the TE room that there are better options out there. Like guys who have played TE before and are still in their athletic prime. Just seems like Tebow had his chance and it’s time for some one younger to get their shot.

Jaguars TE Tim Tebow has no guaranteed money in his one-year, $920,000 deal.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said the lack of guaranteed money is "another sign that he’ll have to fight to make the team." Tebow, 33, is expected to take on a position besides a traditional tight end if he cracks the Jags' Week 1 roster. That could turn the fan favorite into a touchdown vulture near the goal line, affecting the fantasy prospects of Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne, and James Robinson. Tebow's chances to making the team are probably higher than most believe; Jacksonville has one of the NFL's worst tight end groups, led by James O'Shaughnessy and blocking specialist Luke Farrell, a rookie out of Ohio State. Tebow could be drafted absurdly early in August if signs point to him making Jacksonville's roster. All of the top-selling items in the NFL.com store are related to Tebow, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

As I have mentioned several times in multiple threads, the chances of Tebow making the roster are pretty slim (unless he is able to blackmail Meyer with something that would be earth shattering if it came out). The Jags have no risk to move on from him at any point (which I still contend is how this circus will end before September). Maybe I missed something about development of athletes, but I'm guessing playing outfield for 4 years in minor league baseball did not improve his TE playing abilities any. I am not sure that Tebow will be the one player that picks up an entirely new position at 33 (almost 34) after not playing for 8 season.

For now, it gets the Jags clicks and media attention, and someone is making money off of all the Tebow jersey sales. There are any number of more qualified tight ends available (you know, guys that have actually played the position before). Shame on any fantasy reporter that is suggesting Tebow could be drafted "absurdly early" in fantasy drafts. Let's be real here . . . he'd end up going undrafted and stay on the waiver wire in the All-Tebow Family Member league.

I suppose that the Jags could have done their due diligence and number crunching and determined that they would make more than $920,000 by keeping Tebow around all season, in which case that would be a business decision and money grab. But I have a hard time seeing Tebow making many contributions if the Jags kept him around for on-field football purposes.

Any Gator fan wouldn't be shocked of anything. There's been countless rumors for yrs that Urban left UF because the NCAA started breathing down his neck on possible violations at Florida so he left and took a break. A scathing report came out shortly after that about Meyer's Circle of trust and how his favorite players got to eat before everyone else, Percy Harvin's multiple failed drug tests covered up among a ton of other things However given the person Tebow is I doubt he'd even go that route.

My guess is he makes the team though. Why? I don't think he's gonna solely play TE. He's gonna be the Taysom Hill Guy there. Few packages as a WR/TE, few at Hybrid back and some direct snaps at the QB position IMHO. Things they wanted to do with SHenault but they seem to want him to focus more on WR this year then anything. If he can do all of that well enough and be close to what Hill gives NO then I think he makes the team. I think too many people have their mind sets he's solely being used at TE. Look at how they are talking about how they might use Etienne as a hybrid WR/RB. I hate Meyer the person but as a football coach if theres one guy who could make Tebow a success it's him. I'm not saying it works but it's out of the box thinking. if it doesn't work out in the end it's a win for the Jags who get more people following the team and make a ton of money off his merchandise.

Leave whatever role(s) or position(s) out of it. I don't see someone that hasn't played football in 8 years having to learn all new skill sets making an NFL roster and starting over at 34 years old (by the time the season starts). IMO, if Jacksonville wanted to mint a new Inspector Gadget, there are any number of better (and far younger) options to do that with. And Tebow being Tebow, he was adamantly opposed to playing anything but QB, and suddenly he is going to embrace a limited role potentially filled with a ton of contact? Color me skeptical.

Tebow is starring in The Natural Part II

I just want to say Mel Kiper is less then impressive with NFL Draft prospect opinions. This is a guy who was caught yrs ago after the Jimmy Claussen fiasco of overhyping prospects there were clients of agents Kiper was friends with. Anything this guy says should be taken with a grain of salt and give Mel less credibility
Kiper is like that relative you only see once a year around the holidays and don't say two words to except hello and good-bye, see you again next year.
