IDK probably nothing to see here but I don't believe in Gaskin as more than a 3rd down specialist who can fill in when needed. Ahmed is terrible and Malcolm Brown is going to probably get more run than people realize. But Doaks might be this year's James Robinson lite. Didn't see a thread on him but he is being drafted everywhere. I've taken him as a dart throw here and there.

Don't know anything about him but I have one dynasty league with deep benches and this is exactly the type of player I look for. Thanks for bringing him up, will take a look.

 
Yeah, he went for about a quarter budget in my league during the bidding/RFA period we have. If I had to do it over again, I likely wouldn't be a player even in hindsight, but who knows?

 
I want to be excited about Doaks (as a dolphins fan) but man he just looks clumsy when running. Plus he was behind pretty much every other player on his team that touched the ball in YPC last year.

Gaskin was a much better college RB than Doaks not so long ago. I'll grab him super late as a flyer, but I don't see it happening.

As did Gaskin clearly.

Doaks may be something, but who knows until he actually hits the field. One thing we do know is that draft capital and metrics often mean very little when it comes to RBs. Before last year, few would have thought that either Gaskin or Ahmed would be effective starting RBs in the league, yet here we are.

Doaks could be a short yardage back with speed for a big back and good hands. He had many injuries in college, and overcame them. Its hard to evaluate some players coming from a smaller program. He's self-reported as a good blocker  ("If you wanna protect your QB, draft me."). Worth a flyer for the Dolphins, but not in fantasy, unless he impresses early.  I think he's still doing some rehab. At best, what Ballage was supposed to be.

Funny you mention Ballage. I thought of him when watching Doaks, just based on the tape really not looking like the workout numbers make you think it should look. 

Maybe the injuries hindered him a bit and he'll play up to his athletic profile. I just thought he looked a lot like Jordan Howard, and not the Chicago version. Most of his highlights were even 1 yard TD dives 😂

 
I watched 10 seconds of highlights and saw enough to know he can do exactly what Gaskin did last year. Salvon, I think has some x-factor to him. At 230 lbs, I think he adds some toughness to the backfield that was missing last year.

Would not be surprised if he is starter sooner than later. He can do what Gaskin does and will do a better job in pass protection.

 
How do we know what he can do until he faces actual defenses? At least Gaskin and Ahmed have done it on the real stage.

Honestly, finding out the Dolphins signed Malcolm Brown likely makes him irrelevant. We can only pray this guy turns out to be half the talent the Malcolm Brown is. This is gonna be a project...

Fair enough. I think that unless Gaskin proves his mettle for a full year, he/Brown/Ahmed are probably holding the fort this year for the next guy up - whether that’s Doaks or someone else remains to be seen.

All those guys are somewhere in the ‘serviceable in a pinch but replaceable by a marquee talent’ bucket, but I’ve seen no particular reason to believe that same bucket isn’t Doaks’s upside as well, and they’ve at least done it on the field.

Could he get lucky, the same way they did? Sure, I just wouldn’t bet much on it.

I agree. While we increasingly see RBs as interchangeable, the Dolphins have some cash and draft capital to spend next year if they think a bigger impact player will help this offense under Tua get to the next level.

It's an absolute nightmare to the point where you can make an argument for any of the guys. I put a blackmark against what Salvon Ahmed did against the Patriots (a team missing many defenders and waning playoff aspirations). I think the system / o-line must have been favorable last year.

If you look at it objectively, all the Dolphins really did was bring in some bruisers (Brown 225 lbs, Doaks 230 lbs vs Gaskin 201 lbs, Ahmed 197 lbs) to complement their smaller backs. I don't think it's an indictment on either Gaskin or Ahmed's ability to run the offense, moreso plugging in players to shore up obvious deficiencies (short yardage, goalline, and general durability).

The most exciting thing that is exciting about Doaks is that he is an unknown.

How do you figure? Rookie's typically struggle there, and it's a strength for Gaskin.

And yeah, the OL was definitely NOT a strength for RBs last year, at least not the 1st half of the season. They were brutal in run blocking early. They were better in the 2nd half of the season, but part of that was the schedule lightening up significantly, the other part was probably due to starting 3 rookies, and they got better as the season went on. 

I was monitoring football outsiders rush yards created per carry (by the OL) and the dolphins were 31st in that metric through the rams game (week 8?), and rose pretty steadily as they had some good matchups. I think they finished middle of the pack by year end.

The funny thing with Gaskin is his numbers probably would have a looked a whole lot better if he missed 6 games at the start of the season instead of games against the beat up Pats, Chargers minus Boss, Cardinals, and Jets.

Call me a rube, but having an extra 25-30lbs of man between you and the rusher is a sizable advantage, imo. I say all this as a huge Gaskin fan, I loved him with Browning in that offense (and am truly surprised more of those players didn't become NFL starters).

The same reason you want your QB to be 6 ft 4 and have massive hands. Big difference between a 197 lb back and a 230 lb back blocking for you. We're talking fringe heavyweight versus a super middleweight. Gaskin is undersized against 100% of his blocking assignments. Doaks is a guy who can take on 250lb thumpers.

I think if we are talking dynasty here the most exciting thing is that he is dirt cheap for a dart throw with as much upside as many players that will be taken well ahead of him. I grabbed him for a minimum bid after our rookie draft since, if he even makes the team or shoes any promise, I can stash him on the taxi squad, and if he sucks, he's an easy cut.

If talking redraft, he's probably near undraftable in most leagues right now, but could easily climb like James Robinson last year, though the odds show that it is very unlikely.

You're right. I was just high and typing things that sounded like hot takes.

 
He"s free, and has more value to me than an aging, roster clogging WR6/7. I'd rather gamble on the upside.
