I think my money would be on Portugal based on these odds.   @The Gator

I really like England's squad and do think they could win the thing if things break their way but no way do I think they are co-favorites with France.  France should be alone at the top.

My buddy from Germany just joined our fantasy league.  He will stack his team with max Germans, but probably won't read the rules.  He's trying to get his neighbor to join as well - a 70 year old VfB Stuttgart supporter.

I m guessing this is as much a function of more money coming from drunk brits, than reflective of real odds to win.

(Having said that, I could see France as a big disappointment - relative to expectations.)

"The 24 teams have been drawn into 6 groups of four nations.

The group winners and runners-up will advance to the knockout rounds, along with the four best third-placed teams."

First diplomatic row went to Russia v. Ukraine - when Russia complained that the Ukraine shirt had a map of Ukraine, that included Crimea.

UEFA sided with Russia sort of - they allowed the map, but said a slogan "Glory to the Heroes" (in Ukrainian)  stitched into the inside of the collar would have to be removed.

Anyone tracking national players on MLS rosters?

I was hoping Slovakia had called up Martin Skrtel one last time, but instead of seeing his name I saw 2 guys playing in MLS: Jan Gregus (DM, Minnesota United) and Albert Rusnak (AM, Real Salt Lake). Leaves me torn about rooting for them.

The key to this Group is Hungary, playing its first two games against France and Portugal in Budapest, third in Munich.  They will finish 4th, but will take points off someone.
I think the interesting part will be to see if the 3rd place team gets enough points to advance.  If Hungary takes points off the 3rd place team, they might no make it.

Another interesting aspect about this tourney - because of Covid - there are a lot of host nations.

England will get all three group matches at home, if they win the group, Round of 16, and the Semi's and Final are also in London

BRACKET - ROUND OF 16

Monday, June 28
41 - Runners-up Group D vs. Runners-up Group E (Copenhagen; noon ET, 6 p.m. CET) - ESPN
42 - Winners Group F vs. 3rd in A/B/C (Bucharest; 3 p.m. ET, 9 p.m. CET) - ESPN

Tuesday, June 29
43 - Winners Group D vs. Runners-up Group F (London; noon ET, 6 p.m. CET) - ESPN
44 - Winners Group E vs. 3rd in A/B/C/D (Glasgow; 3 p.m. ET, 9 p.m. CET) - ESPN

This is a weird schedule quirk.  Whoever wins Group D (probably England or Croatia) has to play the Group F runner up  (likely Germany, France or Portugal).  However, the team that finishes second in Group D plays the second place team from Group E (likely Poland or Sweden).

Incentive to finish second in Group D rather than win the Group?

Hungary lost their most promising player just prior to tourney.  They will get 0 points and more than likely 0 goals from this group.

They have a 27 game unbeaten streak (22 wins) which is close to tying the all-time record for Italy of 30 unbeaten back in the 1930's.
Italy has a very good side, and will be a tough team to breakdown as their midfield is terrific, assuming Pellegrini and Veratti get back to health sooner rather than later.

However, Bonucci and Chielini are like 100 years old so I wonder how they will hold up as they are still great positionally, but not nearly as good athletically.  I also wonder about how they will score, as I'm not that found of any of their attacking options tbh.

Italy will be a bit of a dark horse coming off the 2018 WC fiasco, but they have been playing well.

One of the pods I listened to said Italy has been called the dark horse by so many, they are really a horse, no longer dark.  Veratti injury is a concern, but they seem to have some good depth in midfield.  Chiellinni/Bonucci back line is quite old in the tooth.  It seems the goals will have to come from Insigne, maybe Belotti or Immobile for the Azzurri.

Yeah, I think Italy will go back to leaning on their defense as they have in the past and look to grind out some 1-0 matches.  It'll be interesting to see how they fare against some of these potent offenses like France if they get that far.

The recipe for the EURO is to win ugly, so I think they are right in the mix.

And the drinks!
As I knew would be the case I was lazy and haven't gotten a new version - https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/aaabatteries/viz/Euro2016_1/Euro2016DrinkingGuide

Let me see what I can whip up.  If you need to drink today go with a Negroni - I gave away my bottle of Campari so maybe I'll make a Negroni with Aperol instead.

  • Wine - ask Bobby Sac
  • Liquor - Grappa
  • Cocktail - Negroni
Turkey

  • Beer - Gara Guzu Blonde Ale
  • Wine - ??
  • Liquor - Raki
  • Cocktail - ??

Already some classic drama going on in the French camp, as if bringing back Benzema after 5+ years in the sin-bin isn't enough.  Giroud scored two late goals in the last friendly against Bulgaria on Tuesday, and then remarked after the game that he would have scored earlier but wasn't getting any service.  Of course, Mbappe takes that as a personal insult.  They are truly their own worst enemies.

One other great tidbit - Griezman is apparently a Football Manager wonderkid, just won the Champions League with a Newcastle team (@McBokonon) led by Mbappe, whom they acquired for E134mil.
