Biden and Putin: the Summit (1 Viewer)

They’ve been behind closed doors now for 90 minutes. Biggest issue: Biden wants Putin to clamp down on these cyber terrorists hanging out in Russia. Second, Putin needs to ease tensions in the Ukraine. Third, stop supporting that crap White Russia pulled- hijacking airplanes and imprisoning passengers. Fourth, stop meddling in our elections,

Putin will no doubt interrupt with a bunch of whataboutisms and denials. What we don’t know is what the carrot and stick will be, exactly.

A lot of Putin’s long term response to this meeting (irrespective of what he says today) will be based on his estimation of what’s going to happen here in 2024: will the establishment Democrats stay in power? Or will the isolationists return? (Putin is surely aware that the Trump led Republicans aren’t the only isolationists: if the Bernie/AOC types gain control of the Democrats they will also be more indifferent to Russia than Biden has been.)

Already more trustworthy than when Trump refused anyone else in the room. No one knows what exactly was said or agreed upon in the Trump/Putin meetings.

For the initial part of the meeting, which lasted 90 minutes, the two men were joined by just one top aide each, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. It was then opened up to a larger circle of aides.

No way anyone leaves Biden alone with any foreign leader. In this case Putin could walk out with Alaska at less than the original purchase price.

Sorry, Trump is the one who broke precedent. There were always others present when a US President met with foreign leaders. Trump wouldn't allow it and only met with Putin alone. There are no official notes of what was said or agreed on.

Biden is following protocol, no matter what you think of him.

As expected, rather than offer any kind of critical assessment or analysis about what’s happening today, the Biden critics in this forum and elsewhere are limited to stale, dumb jokes about his supposed senility and incompetence. It’s sad and depressing, but no surprise.

Is it true Biden's people wont let them address the media together following this meeting?
Addressing the media together is a move that only serves to elevate Putin. Why would you want them to address the media together? They're not allies or equals.

Addressing the media together leads to questions and analysis like "who spoke longer?" "who shook hands with whom?" etc. It's foreign policy 101 not to elevate your adversary.

Sanctions are likely the carrot and the stick, easing them or levying additional/harsher ones.

I liked the part where dr. Jill Biden had to lead joe back to his table.   Where those orthapedic tennis shoes?

As expected, no one can say anything about Biden without the same stale, dumb recycled boring stories about Trump. Sad, but not surprising
I just pointed out a return to normalcy. Apparently this summit's private meetings won't be secret and kept from other top administration officials. A return to normalcy.

It’s impossible to analyze Biden’s performance in this instance without comparison to Trump, since so much of what Biden needs to accomplish today is correcting Trump’s gross mistakes.

I get it. Just sooooo tired of hearing about Trump in every Biden thread

Which gross mistakes is he correcting ?

Sure, but you can't discuss how Biden is returning to how we used to operate without bringing up the previous administration. A joke was made at Biden's expense (talk about tiresome), but the reality is it isn't about mental decline but rather how its now back to normalcy, a direct line to the Trump admin.

Jokes at the expensive of a president are tiresome now?

Sorry but it wasn't a "dumb" joke.  A joke yes, but it was pretty darn funny.

what do you think Putin will demand from Biden and the USA ?

It was a dumb joke because everybody knows at this point that Biden’s opponents think he’s senile. It’s a tiresome complaint, without real evidence. And it’s irrelevant to what’s actually happening.

But thousands of pages of orange jokes were hip and cool?

The joke itself was funny.  If you're not happy the joke was made, that's different.  But the joke, especially about selling Alaska at less than we purchased it for, was actually pretty funny.
