TE Juwan Johnson, Saints

Recommended Posts

Quote

The Athletic's Katherine Terrell writes second-year UDFA Juwan Johnson "seems headed for a Jared Cook-type role" at tight end for the Saints.

Adam Trautman has been hyped as a breakout candidate at tight end for the Saints with Cook now in L.A. with the Chargers, but it was Johnson who paced the Saints in receiving in the preseason opener when he registered a pair of catches for 71 yards while playing a handful of snaps with the first-team offense. It was Johnson who was featured on third-down passing plays with the Taysom Hill unit. Johnson is a former college wideout who converted to tight end this summer and has been one of the stars of Saints camp. He's a name to watch over the next couple weeks and into the season.

Saints TE Nick Vannett is undergoing an MRI to determine the extent of a knee injury he suffered Monday against the Jaguars.

Adam Trautman, meanwhile, was carted off with an ankle/foot injury Monday night. Trautman and Vannett missing extended time would make the unheralded Juwan Johnson the Saints' top tight end headed into Week 1. Johnson leads the team's tight ends in targets, receptions, and receiving yardage through two preseason games. He's not a bad late-round flier for fantasy drafters who have faded the tight end position.

I'm sorry but I refuse to roster a bunch of TEs, even in TE premium leagues.  I'd rather stash a high upside backup RB.  That hasn't always been the case with me, but I'm starting to think that way.  TEs are too risky IMO and take too long to develop.  I'd rather trade for one.  I like to have no more than 3 on my roster and it's killing me that I have 5 in one league :(  Perhaps I should trade a couple :)

Can you even get anything for those back of the roster tes?  I've got a bunch but they're not even worth peanuts no matter how much potential and good off-season press they get.

The league I have 5 are:  Waller, Trautman, Jonnu Smith, Harrison Bryant, and Granson.   All other leagues I have either 2 or 3 TEs only.  I'll give Granson some time to see how he develops and I'm about at the end of my rope with Harrison Bryant.   If he doesn't do something soon I will try to get rid of him.  If I had my druthers I would only have Waller, Smith, and Trautman.

Reportedly Johnson is the man for the next 3-4 weeks while the other TEs recover, but more notably, some Saints reporters believe he was locking down the move TE role prior to Trautman’s injury.

He’s a FA in my dynasty league & I’ve got the roster spot to play with. Due to the volatility of value at the position, they’re always good trade chips if a piece is needed to sweeten a deal. I’ll be attempting to claim him Sat in hopes of a fast start out of the gate. Not sure how much to bid yet.

Let’s see…I added Gronk when he was retired for $1, and just got a 3rd for him this year. I had Ertz as a toss-in to another deal & got a 4th for him this year. I added Tonyan week 3 or 4 last year & flipped him for Curtis Samuel in week 7, which helped me get to the playoffs on Samuel’s good games.

I’m definitely gonna try to get Johnson for the same reason. Couple nice games & I might get a deal going. If not, it didn’t cost much & was worth a try.

I tried trading a 4th plus a backup te (Dan Arnold) to cover bye week for ertz and got a straight rejection.

I dealt both Ertz and Gronkowski during our rookie draft.  Made it a lot easier since both teams needed a backup TE & didn’t mind spending the pick for it.

Feels more like at the beginning since he’s likely to have that role for the 1st 3-4 weeks with Trautman out (foot/ankle).

Agreed.  Juwan Johnson appears to be in line for an extended audition during those early weeks.  If Johnson does not make an impact early, he may relegated to a deep reserve role once Trautman and Vannett return.

You'd have to have really waited to take a TE late if you start him week 1.

I think he's a last round flyer and wait to see what you've got.

Where are you seeing 3-4 weeks with Trautman?  Last I saw he was undergoing further tests but no diagnosis at this time besides him avoiding major injury.

Initially they said “up to” 3 weeks.

They’ve updated it to “1-3 weeks pending further testing”

https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/football/news/saints-adam-trautman-likely-out-1-to-3-weeks/amp/

What’s weird is giving a timeline before an MRI. Sounds like he’s a lock to miss game 1. And in my experience, players don’t go see specialists for minor stuff, so clearly there’s something there that they’re concerned with.

I was saying 3-4 weeks for Juwan because the backup TE is also out for a more definite 4 weeks.

Opening day is 18 days after that article was written. He is pretty likely to be good to go by week 1

When I see that reported I’ll update my rankings.

But what’s more relevant than Trautman’s injury is the reporting that Johnson is likely to be the Move TE regardless. He’s the one running routes while Trautman has been blocking most of the time prior to the injury.

I grabbed him for $11/$500. We’ll see what happens. I’m avoiding Trautman - seems like a lot of hopes & dreams have built up some hype that might be unwarranted.

I’m not sure what to believe yet. Time will tell.

I agree with this. I’m not touching any Saints TE in redraft if I can help it.

ny thoughts in here are purely dynasty oriented.

unlikely, but possible. Winston has been TE friendly in his time in TB so could be sneaky value. He had what, 2/77 in the last preseason game?  That’s 9.7 in PPR & would be a contributor.

Nah - grabbing him in deep dynasty & hoping he flashes early. Purely a Penny stock investment.

Exactly.  Juwan Johnson is a low-cost dynasty investment, and we should get a glimpse early on to see if we want to stay invested or move on.  The hope is he will develop into a "Baby Waller", but the reality is, there are countless WR converts , and rarely do they pan out.  So far, Juwan Johnson looks promising!

Agree.  From what I'm reading, it says that he essentially is the move TE and hardly blocks at all.  Whereas the limited sample size from this preseason, Trautman was called on to pass block more.  Jared Cook never blocked.  There's chatter that this guy will be in the Jared Cook role.

He does have Yahoo WR/TE eligibility which is intriguing.  At first, I thought, who cares.  He's a TE.  I'm never going to play a true TE in my WR spot.  But to play a WR in your TE spot? That's where you take advantage of dual eligibility.  We all remember Marques Colston his first year.  WR snaps, WR targets and catches...yet he could be played as a TE.  The question though is whether or not it really makes a difference.  Will he get enough snaps and looks?  If Calloway will be WR1 to open the season, could Johnson be third in line behind Calloway and Kamara?  Or is that useless Trequan going to mess things up?  If he's still only getting a few looks a game, then there's obviously no reason to stash him.

Go grab this guy while you still can. There is an insane vacuum right now on the Saints offense for WR and TE fantasy points. And he's listed as both in Yahoo. :)

https://www.espn.com/blog/new-orleans-saints/post/_/id/34400/camp-breakout-marquez-callaway-showing-why-saints-had-faith-in-unheralded-wr-depth

Read both articles, as they each contain very interesting insight. Like him or not, Payton has proven to be an offensive wizard - not just at play calling, but also at identifying and developing talent. I am confident the Saints will score a lot of team fantasy points once again this season - the still have the coach and OL, and Jameis is at least serviceable for fantasy even if he doesn't improve from what he's been.

Calloway in the 8th+ is an absolute steal. And Johnson for free could be a godsend for TE-needy teams.

Who is going to catch NO passes this season?!? I am not sure, but right now, these two are first in line.

Talent + Motivation + Opportunity = Success!

Juwan Johnson caught 3-of-3 targets for 21 yards and two touchdowns in the Saints' Week 1 win against the Packers.

Johnson, who picked up steam as a legit pass catching option in the New Orleans offense this preseason, served as an imposing red zone threat for Jameis Winston. The Saints' tight end situation is tough to decipher after one week: Adam Trautman led the team with six targets against Green Bay while Johnson saw the high value targets. Johnson is a good pickup in tight end premium leagues.  Forty-five percent of Winston's attempts went to his tight ends.

  • Faust changed the title to TE Juwan Johnson, Saints

There was some discussion in the waivers thread and trying to wrap my arms about whether he's worth a speculative pickup to replace Jonnu Smith at my backup TE spot (also own Kittle).

Pros: athletic profile, need for pass catchers in that offense, good red zone target

Cons: sharing time with Trautman, limited snap count/targets (at least in game one)

At the expense of chasing points, sometimes guys emerge from seemingly nowhere, and maybe he's one. Tight ends are always a crapshoot, so maybe worth the upside.

Thoughts on Juwan going forward?

I think he's a classic high risk/high reward player. Plenty of opportunities for balls as there's no alpha WR right now (unless Calloway steps up I guess), so he may be able to co-exist with Trautman, though that means he may really be TD dependent would could severely limit upside. But he may have earned more playing time, and there's been enough buzz about him the last couple of months to think they'll open him up more as he develops. I have him on 3 dynasty teams and like what I saw so far. For redraft, tough to gauge. Don't *think* he'll be consistent, but I'd love to be proven wrong. Vs. Jonnu, tough call, as he splits time with Henry, but looks like he'll be involved for sure and probably has a higher floor.

Not sure I'd replace Jonnu with him. He'll end up #1 or #2 in targets on Pats offense and Mac looks like he'll develop sooner rather than later.

He ran 8 routes. How on earth could that production sustain on that level of offensive involvement?

Either he’s a red zone maven the likes of which we’ve not seen in some time, or this isn’t sustainable without a significant increase in routes run.

It was also a really strange game script because the Packers played like a high school team.  Trautman dropped a couple easy passes and the Saints were so dominate they didn't have to throw.  It's hard to tell how he will be used in a competitive game where they have to throw more.

Weird, in my CBS league he's been dual eligible for several weeks. His grey letters are "WR" but when you click for the player card, it lists "Eligibility" next to his photo and I see TE listed.

Johnson has the raw ability to win the job outright. He just might be their best receiver right now (outside of Kamara).

Trautman, a good blocker, could easily be relinquished to that role, allowing Juwan to flourish.

Big-time upside.

There seems to be potential here for Johnson, but Trautman can catch the ball too. With the dearth of viable pass catchers while Thomas is out, the may need Trautman to remain a big part of the passing game plan. The fact that the team just signed Kenny Stills is all you need to know how desperate they seem for depth.

I think it comes down to how much Calloway and the other WRs step up in Thomas' absence. When Winston throws the ball only 20 times, it's hard to make an assessment.  This week should be pretty telling how much more Johnson is involved.

Regarding his CBS designation, it gets even weirder. I have 2 leagues with them, one indeed shows him as eligible in both the WR and TE slot. However, the other shows him as only WR eligible. WTH??

Might be a commissioner setting, I think I saw the option to edit their position eligibility.

I don't mess with that though, too much work and too much whining from year's past where RBs were listed as WRs and the junk with Taysom Hill listed as a TE at one point I believe.
