The Australian federal government is planning to de-anonymize the internet to introduce a social credit system to combat "online abuse" - police will have access to individuals' social media accounts, which will be linked to people's passports.

I know its not the most credible news source, but TikTok has some head scratchingly insane video and commentary. Its damn near scary how the gov't has completely locked the citizens down and the police are enforcing such mind boggling rules.

by reading some replies, that was something that explored a few months ago but never happened. Still its GD scary to even think it was a consideration

Pretty wild stuff

People in South Australia will be forced to download an app that combines facial recognition and geolocation. The state will text them at random times, and thereafter they will have 15 minutes to take a picture of their face in the location where they are supposed to be. Should they fail, the local police department will be sent to follow up in person. “We don’t tell them how often or when, on a random basis they have to reply within 15 minutes,” Premier Steven Marshall explained. “I think every South Australian should feel pretty proud that we are the national pilot for the home-based quarantine app.”

Each story coming out of Australia seems to be crazier than the last. And I'm not talking about monster spiders taking over towns. Government lockdowns seem to be increasingly authoritarian and totalitarian.  I'll post some updates (with links!) with examples.
The crazy thing is that it's supported  by the majority of the populace.

Soviet Russia had more freedoms.    It's a great time to be a petty dictator.    The petty dictatorship of the near future in Australia  should stop it here.

I thought Australia was behind our corona timeline but now fear they’re about 6 months ahead of us . This could be a preview for us

I think it’s hard to say what a good timeline is when they are doing things so differently. They have been pretty bad with their vaccine roll out.

Lockdowns I think - we never really had lockdowns like they have.
Something about that data has to be wrong.

No deaths from COVID-19 were recorded in Australia from 28 December 2020 until 13 April 2021.  Australia closed it's borders In March and has instituted different levels of lockdowns nationwide.  Cases are going up even with lockdowns.  So we know Delta beats lockdowns.

As usual you are following right wing propaganda. The governments, both left and right wing are doing what 70-80% of what the population want.

I know its not the most credible news source, but TikTok has some head scratchingly insane video and commentary. Its damn near scary how the gov't has completely locked the citizens down and the police are enforcing such mind boggling rules.
Lockdowns vary in size and scope. They are supported by the vast majority of the populace. Those that hate it are very vocal. Lockdowns are supported by both sides of politics. The two major left wing state governments that held an election during covid were returned with massive majorities.

Queensland - A conservative state, but previous conservative governments effed up big time. Labour has been in power for about 22 of the last 30 years. The Labour gov were expected to be thrown out in a massive defeat....until covid. Only 6 deaths in 18 months and they successfully have held out delta....will happen soon enough. They were returned to power with an increased majority primarily due to their handling of covid

Western Australia - A first time labour government and popular premier has had the hardest stance of any premier. The state has geographical advantages in stopping spread. Its basically a different country with empty land surrounding the city of Perth. The conservative opposition was decimated with minority parties scoring more seats. The labour government has something like 70% of seats. Covid has been rare here.

How bad is COVID down there?
Good question.

delta ruined the success Australia had in holding it off. The right wing federal government was slow in getting its hands on vaccines and have delegated all responsibility to the states. Other countries were much more forceful in getting vaccines. The biggest state New South Wales, had the most relaxed rules around covid. A right wing government. They currently had 1400+ cases yesterday and 12 deaths. All from an unvaccinated limo driver who was taking a person from the airport to hotel quarantine in June. The state government was slow to lockdown and was a step behind the whole way.

The second biggest state, Victoria has been unlucky. 6 lockdowns. They had australias biggest lockdown last year where it ran rampant in nursing homes, this time they beat delta the first time, but opened up too early. Yesterday they broke 200 cases and had 3 deaths. The left wing government here was very popular, but has been incompetant in many ways...unlike the left wing governments in western australia and queensland who have been successful to date.

South Australia had an outbreak last year and has had the odd case here and there, but have beaten it off every time. The right wing government here is just as strict as its left wing counterparts in qld and W,A.

Tasmania has been relatively free....an island state it had strategic advantages. The right wing government here has also been strict. Successfully

All cases have originated from hotel quarantine breaches. The federal government has been responsible for this and refused better options. The most successful quarantine facility is an isolated place in the northern territory. Other states have wanted to follow this model, but the federal gov has refused. Some states are going their own way now,

You know not of what you talk of. Your emotional post of nonsense doesnt even come close to the reality. People are incredibly free in Australia. The australian population clearly doesnt want covid. Masking is tolerated by over 90% of the populace. Vaccine acceptance is high, but the lack of supply is causing issues. The states are racing to hold off covid before it overwhelms the hospital system. Lockdowns work. People can still do shopping, exercise, go to the park. Social distancing is practised. Hand hygeine is practiced. Masks are worn. The economy has recovered quickly. Is everyone happy, of course not. Some businesses have gone under. Some industries are on their knees. Government financial support has been huge in keeping some afloat.

Sure there are rules that are enforced, but the punishment is relatively minor for infringements. Fines. People who break an ordered quarantine cop the biggest punishment behind those with covid spreading it. Yeah there are those screaming “freedom”, but they are seen as lunatics who destroy any argument they have by going on about bill gates, 5G and other such laughable points.

Yes. Good post.

Delta can be beaten with short sharp lockdowns. Queensland beat one. Victoria did until they opened up early, NSW dithered and now its out of control. Other states have shut the borders to nsw, but victoria, south australia and qld have all been affected by nsw truck drivers coming in with covid. Vaccines supplies are finally coming in.

In another mistake the federal goverment relied entirely on astra zeneca with pfizer as the backstop. No one wants AZ. Pfizer is now coming in larger supplies and moderna soon will arrive. Hundreds of thousands of people are being vaccinated every day in well run and managed government centres. Australia will reach 80% vaccinated by the end of the year, maybe earlier after starting behind. The vocal minority who wont get vaccinated will be the ones that suffer the most. The key to stop the hospitals being overun, is getting the vaccine into arms before its rampant. Too late for Nsw.

basically australia knows the dam is going to break. They have successfult had enough fingers to plug the breaks. The water is too strong now so they are vaccinating to get people out of the way. Some want to stay at the dam and ignore the reality.

Unfortunately you're right. The population wants security over freedom as a majority. Even if they feel the government is going too far, they still favor the "security" government provides. It's just how they've been bred. They have no gun ownership rights. They have no means to tell the government to back off if they wanted to.

Several impounded dogs due to be rescued by a shelter have instead been shot dead by a rural council in NSW under its interpretation of COVID-19 restrictions, alarming animal activists and prompting a government probe.

Bourke Shire Council, in the state’s north-west, killed the dogs to prevent volunteers at a Cobar-based animal shelter from travelling to pick up the animals last week, according to council’s watchdog, the Office of Local Government.“

The western world has lost its absolute ####### mind.   Unbelievable.

@John Maddens Lunchbox is the Australian government doing anything for the lowest paid  essential workers like grocery store workers. Always thought it was terrible how we depended on these people to work through covid for low wages

Daniel Andrews is the most left wing Premier in Australia. He also has a very good working relationship with the right wing Prime Minister. He will not deny healthcare to those sick. The system simply doesnt allow him to. What he is basically trying to do is scare people into getting vaccinated. His comments about unvaccinated not being able to go to sporting events, restaurants etc is more within the remit of his powers. Many places in the world do such a thing. Restuarants, sporting events etc will be free to choose if the accept unvaccinated people. Its all talk for now. Andrews has had bad luck and bad management in dealing with covid. Lucky for him the opposition is probably going to change their leader soon to their previous leader who also was unloved. Incompetant oppositions rarely get elected, even if the government also is.

Guns are not the way to tell a government how to back off. Maybe in the early 1800s lol. Anyone who needs a gun in Australia can get one eg farmers, security, sporting shooters, gun range etc. Australians do not have the right fo bear arms, arm bears or bare arms. The ballot box works as a scare tactic. Voting is compulsory ie 100% turnout, dont vote, you get fined. You can turn your ballot into a paper aeroplane, write any obscene thing you want on it, but you have to get your ballot papers.

A small minority follow US right wing propoganda but make themselves sound stupid doing so eg when they go on about Liberals destroying everything etc. in Australia the Liberals are the right wing, currently in government.

Australians are plenty free, but they dont want covid. Sorry if that seems an issue. When both sides of government have the same opinion, voters can only go the fringes. The fringes hold the balance of power in the Senate eg the Greens, One Nation (Ultra right wing nationalist racists) and individuals who are all over the map. Federal elections are held every 3 years so governments are constantly trying to keep an electorate happy while making little structural difference.

@John Maddens Lunchbox is the Australian government doing anything for the lowest paid  essential workers like grocery store workers. Always thought it was terrible how we depended on these people to work through covid for low wages
This is a tough question HT. The federal government has been very generous to individuals and companies affected by covid,  but a lot fall through the cracks. In the rush to get money out they basically asked any business who thought they would be affected by covid to make a claim. Huge companies made millions and actually increased revenue during covid. They were not asked to pay it back. Meanwhile average joes have to pay back any money they were overpaid. I think the top 3 companies given money that went straight into shareholders pockets got more money than 90% of average joes.

The minimum wage in Australia is well over $20 an hour so grocery workers were well looked after. Shops that have to shut during lockdowns not so much. All stores require masks in lockdown areas, well practically everywhere and registering/checking in when you enter a store. Makes contact tracing easier. If anyone with covid was in a store, anyone there at the times has to isolate and get tested. Delta is making that impossible in NSW and soon Victoria. The vaccinated very soon will be given normal freedoms. Life is about to made awkward for the unvaccinated.

The federal government led by the Prime Minister, when he was health minister led the No Jab No Pay initiative. Any parent who refused to vaccinate their child for measles etc would get no government funds. They arent threatening that yet for covid vaccines, but both sides of the political spectrum would agree to it if they did.

You see these videos of police threatening people drinking tea on their porch or arresting people daring to walk out of their houses not during their allotted time? Yea the happy little brown shirts aren't going to be as authoritative if they think a homeowner is packing.

It's not right wing propaganda. Every dictator, despot or communist regime that has ever come to power first started with disarming the populace. No guns, no ability to defend your freedom. Why do you think the US Constitution has it as the 2nd amendment?

I thought our 2nd Amendment had something to do with a well regulated militia. I strongly support the 2nd and I get the point but I think the post above mine is taking too many liberties with history. Nobody is coming for your guns or my guns as a precursor to autocratic rule. I think that kind of 'what if' language is a bit inflammatory.

The reason: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State,

The Right: "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Link?   As a student of history, I see dictators typically start by demonizing the media and finding a subset of the populace to blame for all the problems of society.   I'm not aware of regimes starting with taking guns from people as a first step.

Fine Mr semantics. First step, demonize a subset. Then disarm the populace in the name of protecting them from that subset.

It’s not semantics.  Dictators follow similar playbooks.  Where have they disarmed the populace?
Dictators, despots, communist regimes basically any tyrannical form of government. Many of them disarm the populace. Some don't as you stated but many do.

The obvious is King George against the colonies tried to disarm them leading to our founding fathers including the 2nd amendment as a founding principle for a free nation.

The other obvious one is Nazi Germany. The National gun registry (which wasn't created by the Nazis) was used by them when they came to power to identify and confiscate as many weapons as they could leading up to their complete take over.

The less talked about ones include the Ottoman Empire, Soviet Union, China, Cambodia. A lot of ethnic cleansing that took place after a country was able to control or remove the weapons from the people's hands.

Australia took the guns away in the 90s. A right wing government after the Port Arthur massacre. Like I said before you can still get them, but you need to have a legitimate reason. If you think a gun is going to stop Government, police or well armed forces from “defending your freedom”. Good luck. If a 1000 strong militia took on the US Defence forces, Im guessing the casualties would be 1000 to 10. Your gun may have helped in the 1800s. Now if they want you, they will get you. Unless you have a private air force. The second amendment is an archaic relic of its time. Just admit it. You like guns. You like to shoot them. As long as you dont hurt people nobody gives a ####. How many tyrannical governments in the last 200+ years?

As for the police....when people defy government directives. Like refusing to wear masks or having picnics with people not from their household, they get asked to wear a mask and go home. They can, but do not always fine people. If their state is in lockdown. 2 states are in lockdown now. 4 Arent. Police for centuries have had to follow and enact laws that are unfair, strange or heavy handed. When it comes to public health, its an easy choice for them. The coming months are likely to get ugly as those that want to use horse wormer cause Joe Rogan used it, but wont follow medical advice by professionals refuse to get vaccinated and get their freedoms curtailed. You are free to do as we tell you.

The reason: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State,

The Right: "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Thankfully Australia doesnt worry about this. By the way how many well regulated militias are there?

Taliban is doing it right now in Afghanistan.  Door to door gun confiscation.
Thankfully the taliban isnt in charge in Australia. Or anywhere else. They barely are in charge of Afghanistan. Follow the money. Where do the Taliban get their funding and equipment from? Cut off the head and the body is useless.

Australians who live overseas may be unable to leave country if they return for visit

This is aimed primarily at the large Indian community who have been able to circumvent border restrictions by claiming emergency family issues and instead going to weddings, birthdays etc and bringing back Delta in quartantine, which then escapes quarantine. Only dual citizens can be refused reentry. If you want to have one foot in india and one in australia dont be surprised if your #### gets salty.

Legitimate family or business can still be managed,. But the Australian populace is sick of people not playing by the rules and bringing consequences on the entire society

Only posh boys play rugby.

Golf.

Thats it. The rest are available in schools, general public etc. English cricket is considered posh, but Cricket is the opposite in Australia. Rugby League is a working mans sport. You can put up an argument on Aussie Rules, especially in Melbourne. There is a divide between grammar and public schools in the sport, but its mainly just banter.

Tennis, Swimming, Basketball, Soccer and Netball are freely available with equal opportunity

Rugby Union is almost exclusively private and grammar schools. Rah rah rah

Thanks for that. More than I would have thought. Funny theyve really only popped up since the early 90s. Maybe i misread that. Im not sure what their purpose is. They seem to be at odds with whoever is in power, right or left. They dont have the strength to even get close to defending anything,. Are they more like social clubs? Wouldnt it be easier to get these guys to defend the borders? Give them a purpose?

I think I know the answer, but @John Maddens Lunchbox how do you feel about the quarantine app that uses facial recognition and geolocation to check in on you?

https://www.buzz.ie/news/australia-tests-orwellian-covid-app-24904570

Residents who sign on for the trial will install the Home Quarantine SA app on their smartphones to monitor their compliance with quarantine requirements through random in-app checks. Users will have 15 minutes, when the app pings them, to prove they are at their homes by showing the app their faces and giving it access to geo-location data.

Should they fail to do so, the local police department will be sent to follow up in person.

Rugby or Rugby Union is a 15 a side sport, more popular world wide. Associated with posh people. They have rucks and malls and respect for the referee is integral. Lots more to it, but w will keep it simple.

Rugby League is an offshoot of Union. Formed in about 1900. 13 a aide. Its working class, faster flowing and more violent. It essentially is only played in 2 states in Australia, NSW and QLD where its a big deal. Internationally it really only is played in the north of England, as an alternative to Rugby in New Zealand. When they have their “world cup” they get a lot of people from sydney playing for Lebanon, Fiji, Samoa etc

It actually offers people a choice. It is voluntary as far as im aware. Currently if you have to quarantine at home or in a hotel, police can and do arrive regularly on your doorstep without warning to ensure you are complying with mandatory quarantine. This pilot program saves resources so police dont have to go around the community and can do it remotely. If you are at home anyway, does it matter if you answer the door to police or check in via your device? If it does matter, then normal quarantine for you.

If for arguments sake it is mandatory in this pilot program in south australia. Currently South Australia has zero covid cases and very few in quarantine. Once vaccination rates hit 80% double dose, expected by the end of 2021, Australia opens up and quarantine options change.

It actually offers people a choice. It is voluntary as far as im aware. Currently if you have to quarantine at home or in a hotel, police can and do arrive regularly on your doorstep without warning to ensure you are complying with mandatory quarantine. I think the thing that gets me is the "police involvement" aspect. If everyone is so "pro-quarantine" why do we need the police? This is where freedoms clash with gov't overreach IMO. We are militarizing the police and its getting scary.

Australian police can now hack your device, collect or delete your data, take over your social media accounts.

absolutely frightening

Australian companies obliged to comply

When presented with such warrant from the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, Australian companies, system administrators etc. must comply, and actively help the police to modify, add, copy, or delete the data of a person under investigation. Refusing to comply could have one end up in jail for up to ten years, according to the new bill.

Required hacking activities could include: altering, copying and deleting data; intercepting and modifying communications; surveilling networks; and changing account credentials.
But...private bushiness...right?

Justification of the bill

Politicians justify the need for the bill by stating that it is intended to fight child exploitation (CSAM) and terrorism. However, the bill itself enables law enforcement to investigate any "serious Commonwealth offence" or "serious State offence that has a federal aspect".

In fact, this wording enables the police to investigate any offence which is punishable by imprisonment of at least three years, including terrorism, sharing child abuse material, violence, acts of piracy, bankruptcy and company violations, and tax evasion.
it always starts off this way
