RB Ty Johnson, NYJ (2 Viewers)

"Ready to Run" Johnson Goes Off at Pro Day, Talks Draft

Excerpt:

Johnson did more than run. He also recorded a 34-inch vertical jump and benched pressed 225 pounds 29 times, which would’ve been better than all but one running back at the NFL Combine. In the process, Johnson -- who shut his day down after experiencing some hamstring tightness on his second run -- likely improved his draft stock among the 29 NFL teams that came out to watch him in person at the Cole Field House Performance Center.

Maryland RB Ty Johnson tweaked his hamstring at his pro day.

Hat tip to Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline on this one. Johnson (5'9/205) did manage to run a sharp 40-yard dash timed variably between 4.35-4.41 seconds, but the tweaked hamstring prevented him from taking part in further tests or position drills. Given that the Maryland speedster did not receive an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine, his lack of a complete testing gamut on pro day -- as well as his inability to show off for pro teams in position drills -- should be considered a demerit on his draft stock. That said, in a running backs class somewhat lacking in athleticism on the whole, Johnson does represent a sneaky-interesting prospect for late on Day 3 or coming in as a priority free agent after the draft.

I saw Johnson play in college watching my hometown Terps mired in mediocrity and he was often a lone bright spot. I'm not sure he gets much of a chance in the Pros, but he is athletic so if he gets a shot to showcase his skills I think he could latch onto a team. I doubt he's ever a RB2 though.

He’s certainly an interesting combination of speed and size yet seems to be almost forgotten. I just read a top 30 RB prospect article that Faust posted on another thread and he wasn’t even on it. Will see how the draft shakes out but he could be a good dart throw at the end of dynasty rookie drafts, where drafting WRs early seems like the wiser general move.

Fate has determined he is now a Lion. Interesting guy to add to the mix for us

There are going to be some guys getting cut from our backfield. I was hoping they would take more of Theo replacement pass catching specialist but maybe Ty can learn that role? If nothing else, he’s an immmediate special teams impact.
My choice for PR if Ty can replicate what he did in college.

He was on my college fantasy team last two years.

I don't know how to describe him.. obviously straight line fast, would get around the corner on sweeps, decent ability to make people miss.

The weird part is his power running.  He always fell forward (seems to be capable of power running?), but he never shed a single defender that I recall.  He would appear to brace for contact rather than initiating it... no stiff arm, would step out of bounds instead of fighting for those 2-3 more yards on the sideline.

Fun to watch when he gets going.

eta - never seemed to catch many balls but looked perfectly capable and comfortable doing so when they did.

O'HARA: What we learned from minicamp

Excerpt:

Ty Johnson: It’s easy to be impressed with the rookie running back because of his speed. It’s a skill that stands out on every play. The details and assignments of a rookie guard, for example, aren’t as easily noticed. Johnson looks like a real prospect, but there’s still real football to be played.

Theo Riddick cut and no celebratory toot toot from anyone on this train?

I think this is great news for him

Has to be a good sign even though right now all accounts out of TC are that he's clearly 4th string righ now

Never mind. Total edit. Oops.

Chris Johnson, Chris Thompson, same thing.

At Thompson's ADP...would have been a funny call and response. Maybe.

Without injury he is simply taking up a bench spot.
What makes say you that? Especially considering Detroit has never really seemed to go with 1 lead back, and their coach is from the Bellichick tree (and we know how he uses rbs).

The only thing I can think of is a Kerryon owner hoping it to be true.

However, considering Kerryon's injury history, it seems like a good bet that he will miss time at some point (durability rating of 1/5).

62% chance of injury? Now I’ve seen it all.

"Chances athlete misses at least 2 quarters"

Always good to clarify what their metrics are
It’s a useless guess either way. The fact they assign percentages is hysterical.

I’d imagine every RB has a fairly decent chance of missing 2 quarters at some point. It’s the nature of the beast.

Will Kerryon Johnson miss any time this season? Maybe.

I'm bot particularly fond of their percentages either. I appreciate their history of injuries going back to college. I havent found another site there.

I posted it for the history, not the percent. He has not been shown to be very durable

More relevant is how has Darrell Bevell historically used his RBs. Patricia is more involved in the other side of the ball.

I don’t think Ty Johnson will have much relevance this year but he is def fast. He wasn’t used as a receiver in college (11 catches the last two years) but will need to be if he wants a decent career. Potential satellite back....someday.

See you’re simply betting on an injury. I don’t like to play that game. I would rather grab a Darwin Thompson if we’re going that route.

no I'm betting on him getting receptions and significant more work of there is an injury.

of course I'd take Thompson over him. I wouldn't put the two of them at similar ADP at all. kind of a weird comparison IMO

With CJ Anderson and Zach Zenner still there I don’t see this kid getting playing time even with a Johnson injury.

IMO no doubt he makes the team. Zenner and Anderson are what come up when you Google "Just A Guy NFL." Ty has talent like no one else in that RB stable. Not saying hes better than Kerryon, just saying he has skills Kerryon doesn't.

He is absolutly making the team and I think there is a good chance he makes a big play in preaseason. He is fast as hell. I am not sure yet if he has anything else yet, but his acceleration is a weapon.

Kerryon is the best receiving weapon out of the backfield so I am not convinced he's coming off the field for passing downs.
The post I was responding to was that they didn't need Ty Johnson in the event of an injury to Kerryon because they had Anderson and Zenner. I agree Kerryon is a three down back though.

Quite a few teams with two or three talented backs. Pretty big gap between Kerryon and the other three.
Besides the eye test,  there is also this stat per PFF:

Last season, Johnson averaged 5.43 yards per carry. All other Detroit running backs combined to average just 3.42 yards per carry. This differential of 2.01 led the league, and a 3.42 yards-per-carry average would have ranked last among all NFL teams.

Anybody have any theories as to why Kerryon came off the field for all three of the 1st string 3rd downs? Two went to CJA and one went to Ty Johnson.

Kerryon's value is tied up in the certainty that he's a bellcow back, so that was weird.

That's great info.  Bumps Ty's value, IMO (currently ranked around rookie RB28).

Because he's not a bellcow back I guess. His injury history dates back to high school... he shouldn't be a bellcow in the NFL

I don't think he missed a single game in college and as a junior he was the definition of a bellcow. 3.5x more carries than the next RB and 2.5x more receptions than the next best back. I do agree he is a bit sleight for an NFL RB and it would be best to keep his usage in the 220-250 range. However, I think those need to include those 3rd down passing situations as they are really important and he's got chops as a receiver.

Would you tweeting that, post to reddit and anything else you can think of? How much does a robotically service cost? TIA

Trying to get him late third so ai need his ADP to drop a good 8-10 spots.

The Lions are a poorly run franchise for theory 1.

Non mutually exclusive theory 2 is that Ty Johnson looked so good in passing down work he made them comfortable cutting Riddick.

So you guys think 2nd preseason game telegraphs regular season usage? It’s possible it was an opportunity look at guys they’re evaluating.
