“Former Super Bowl champ Patten dies in motorcycle crash

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) Former three-time Super Bowl champion David Patten Jr. has died in a motorcycle accident.

The Richland County (South Carolina) Coroner identified the victim of a crash Thursday night as Patten, 47, who is from Columbia.

Patten played with the New England Patriots from 2001 until 2004, wining three NFL titles. He caught an 8 yard touchdown pass in the 2001 Super Bowl victory, the first scoring toss by Tom Brady his championship career.

Patten played 12 seasons in the NFL. He had 324 catches for 4,715 yards and 24 touchdowns in his career.

The New England Patriots also released news of Patten's death.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick was saddened by Patten's passing and called him ''an essential person and player in Patriots' history.''

The play where he was knocked out against Buffalo is still an all time great Patriots moment...it was one of those plays where after years of bad luck as a franchise you could finally say that never happens to us only against us and you saw the tide changing more and more in a positive way...gone too soon but definitely left a legacy with the Pats and as Tom said he was symbolic of those early years.

100%. If you look to any single play for metaphorical birth of a dynasty it's that. 

And his corner end zone toe tap TD from Bledsoe in 01 championship is a top 10 memory play for me.

Lunch box player. I forget which announcer coined that, but it was often used for Pats players of that era. Packed a lunch, went to work, worked hard.

Definitely one of the funnest players to watch. He had a lot of big plays.
