Direct Headline: American Voters Haven’t Been Afraid Like This in a Long Time

In a rare convergence, America’s voters are not merely unhappy with their political leadership, but awash in fears about economic security, border security, international security and even physical security....

...From late 2017 until the pandemic, a majority of Americans believed that the economy was strong, and from 2014 until the pandemic at least a plurality believed their personal economic situation was improving. Covid-19 cut sharply into that feeling of well-being; this was initially seen as temporary, though, and trillions of dollars flowed into keeping people afloat. But then near-double-digit inflation hit consumers for the first time in 40 years; 60 percent of voters now see the economy as weak and 48 percent say their financial situation is worsening, according to a Harris poll conducted April 20-21. Many Americans under 60 have relatively little experience with anything but comparatively low fuel costs, negligible interest rates and stable prices. Virtually overnight these assumptions have been shaken. Only 35 percent approve of President Biden’s handling of inflation....

These economic blows are just one element in a cascading set of problems all hitting at the same time. It combines the nuclear anxieties of the 1950s and ’60s with the inflation threat of the ’70s, the crime wave of the ’80s and ’90s and the tensions over illegal immigration in the 2000s and beyond.....The return of fear about crime is especially worrisome for Democrats....Worries about walking the streets and riding the subway were less acute among new generations, and yet today those same streets and mass transit are once again hobbled by fear; even the head of the New York-area Metropolitan Transportation Authority argued that fear of crime and homelessness was behind a 36 percent drop in ridership between December 2021 and January 2022....

...Immigration was used effectively by President Donald Trump as a wedge issue to win working-class voters. According to the April Harris poll, under Mr. Biden, 59 percent of voters believe that we have “effectively” open borders and, looking back, many even support some of Mr. Trump’s immigration policies. Mr. Biden receives only 38 percent approval for his immigration policy, a troublingly low rating for a Democrat (President Barack Obama was at 29 percent approval on immigration policy before the 2010 midterm wipeout)....

....Today, fear of a great power conflict and nuclear weapons has emerged in ways not seen since the Cold War. With the invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin, fresh ballistic missile tests, and Mr. Putin’s explicit reference to the use of nuclear weapons and “unpredictable” consequences of opposing him, fear of nuclear weapons has been thrust front and center, as a recent focus group of Americans by Times Opinion found as well. Fear of nuclear weapons now ranks second in issues that worry voters, behind the effects of inflation.....

Continuing to let gas prices surge will hurt Democrats on the ballot in the fall; the party needs a new, tempered energy policy that includes a more gradual transition to alternative fuels and an appreciation of energy independence.....The Biden administration is also losing in swing areas on immigration, as evidenced by the nine Senate Democrats and the House’s bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus that have expressed reservations about its plan to lift Title 42, the Trump administration’s Covid-era policy of intercepting and returning migrants without due process....

....With rising crime as an issue, the favorable rating of the Department of Justice has sunk to just 51 percent under Merrick Garland, according to the Harris poll. Mr. Biden needs to shake up his top law-enforcement officials and back legislation that combines police reform with funding for hundreds of thousands of new community police officers, greater federal involvement in stopping violent crime syndicates and gangs, and wider discretion for judges to take violent criminals off the streets. The administration needs to consider interceding on behalf of victims in circumstances in which district attorneys are not prosecuting violent criminals to the full extent of the law, especially when they waive “enhancements” for gang-related crimes....The U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan precipitated a decline in his administration’s approval rates. Ukraine’s loss would compound the view among some voters that he is too weak....

According to reports, Mr. Biden now says he is running for re-election in 2024. But he is facing limited enthusiasm in his own party for a second run and loses even to Mr. Trump in hypothetical matchups, according to the Harris poll. Sticking to the high-priced Build Back Better legislation or variants of it on the basis of narrow party-line votes has not been successful....People are afraid of being walloped financially, being injured or menaced by criminals, being in a country without strong borders or Covid protections for immigrants, and being under threat of nuclear weapons. If Mr. Biden and Democratic leaders cannot effectively address these fears, the wave election will hit them in November...

Direct Headline: Poll: 62% of Americans Say They Have Political Views They’re Afraid to Share

50% of strong liberals support firing Trump donors, 36% of strong conservatives support firing Biden donors; 32% are worried about missing out on job opportunities because of their political opinions...

These fears cross partisan lines. Majorities of Democrats (52%), independents (59%) and Republicans (77%) all agree they have political opinions they are afraid to share....Strong liberals stand out, however, as the only political group who feel they can express themselves. Nearly 6 in 10 (58%) of staunch liberals feel they can say what they believe. However, centrist liberals feel differently. A slim majority (52%) of liberals feel they have to self‐censor, as do 64% of moderates, and 77% of conservatives. This demonstrates that political expression is an issue that divides the Democratic coalition between centrist Democrats and their left flank....

...Self‐censorship is widespread across demographic groups as well....Nearly two‐thirds of Latino Americans (65%) and White Americans (64%) and nearly half of African Americans (49%) have political views they are afraid to share. Majorities of men (65%) and women (59%), people with incomes over $100,000 (60%) and people with incomes less than $20,000 (58%), people under 35 (55%) and over 65 (66%), religious (71%) and non‐religious (56%) all agree that the political climate prevents them from expressing their true beliefs....Young Americans are also more likely than older Americans to support punishing people at work for personal donations to Trump. Forty‐four percent (44%) of Americans under 30 support firing executives if they donate to Trump.....

Parents want their children to be safe. But the question emerges, looking at the past few years of stacking scandals, incompetence and policy failures, about their future financial safety ( inflation/out of control government spending and printing money), their immediate physical safety ( rising crime/rising violence), the safety offered to them by physical boundaries ( immigration/Border Crisis) and the macro view of their safety ( being incinerated by all out nuclear war via Putin)

Do you feel like American society as we know it is at the beginning of the end stage?

Do you carry any fear or apprehension or doubt or any other emotion regarding what you want for your children's future in America?

What adjustments/changes have you made in your approach, your political views, your living situation, your financial decision making, your career choices, etc, etc to try to make your kids safer?

I'll leave this here for others to discuss.

We are definitely at the end stage as a country.  Who knows, countries may not be a thing in 100 years, we may go back to our tribal/nomadic existence like thousands of years ago.

increase wages to $12-15 an hour and tax the rich was what was promised to help lower class people ... are you saying it hasn't worked out like they said ?? shocking :(

Direct Headline: ‘Please Help’: A Nationwide Baby Formula Shortage Worsens

After Abbott Nutrition issued voluntary recalls of its popular baby formulas, retailers have limited purchases, leaving desperate parents searching for solutions....Abbott Nutrition is the exclusive supplier for more than half of the WIC agencies nationwide, meaning that “this is not an isolated issue.”....The manufacturer of Ashley Hernandez’s preferred baby formula for her two girls said it was out of stock on its website. Listings on eBay showed it would cost her up to $120 for a single can. So when she found a seller online offering 10 cans for $40 each, she expressed her desperation....“I have two children,” Ms. Hernandez, 35, of Dallas, began her message. “I cannot find it. I can purchase this today. I can pay cash.”

Parents across the country are struggling to keep up with a nationwide shortage of baby formula — a problem worsened by a recent recall by Abbott Nutrition, a manufacturer of baby food. The recall came after at least four babies were hospitalized with bacterial infections and two died after consuming its products....Now, several major retailers eager to preserve inventory are limiting how much baby formula their customers can buy....CVS said in a statement that “following supplier challenges and increased customer demand,” buyers will be limited to three baby formula products...Walgreens echoed that in a statement, saying it had also imposed a three-item limit.... Target said it had a four-item...Costco, which did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on Saturday, had various caps on formulas listed on its website....

“Every day, we hear from parents who are hurt, angry, anxious and scared,” he said. “The lives of their infants are on the line.”

....31 percent of formula products were out of stock across the country as of April. In seven states — Connecticut, Delaware, Montana, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Texas and Washington — the rate for the week of April 3 was even worse, at 40 percent....The shortage is also financially burdening families already grappling with a surge in inflation. The office of the U.S. Surgeon General said on its website that families typically spend up to $1,500 on infant formula in the first year.....the shortage is “particularly acute for infants who require specialty formulas to address allergies, gastrointestinal issues or metabolic disorders.”.....

From 2021 to 2022- Gasoline Prices - Up 48.8%

Fox's Jesse Watters breaks down the core logistical problems here

1) A large share of America's baby formula supply relies on China and the CCP, America's natural rival and largest foreign threat

2) Inflation is hitting American families very hard across the board i.e. gasoline, but particularly low income families who can afford these kind of shortages/price spikes the least.  Baby formula was already considered expensive before the inflation hit and the shortage crisis and the situation does not appear to have either short term or long term solutions ahead.

3) You have a convergence - The supply chain related general shortage, a massive recall by Abbott Nutrition ( which impacts these low income families the hardest through WIC, the Women/Infants/Children supplemental nutrition program), hoarding/stockpiling by parents in fear and a large black market environment created by vast demand and the enabled criminal behavior by Democratic woke public policies.

4) There are infants with special needs and require special formula where this "convergence" makes their situation even more difficult

This thread is built around average working class American citizens being "afraid" of what the future might bring for them and their families when you stack the problems of out of control crime, soaring inflation, insecure borders, threat of World War and now being unable to feed their babies.

And the Biden Administration seems intent on focusing most of it's energy on "culture wars" instead.

Direct Headline: The Baby Formula Crime Ring

It’s pricey, it’s portable, its users need it constantly, and retailers love to buy it at a discount. All of which makes it a perfect product to steal....Between factory and baby aisle, formula’s cheap ingredients become steeply, even mysteriously expensive. Basic types (2018 Price Points) run about $15 for a 12.5-ounce can, amounting to perhaps $150 a month for a fully formula-fed infant....Products like formula — expensive but with slim retail margins — are vulnerable to black-marketeers. Independent store owners, for example, don’t buy enough formula to qualify for the bulk discounts that manufacturers offer big chains. But if they can acquire off-market formula at subwholesale prices and resell it for the usual rates, they can improve their bottom lines.....In spring 2012, Kevin Shultz, a loss-prevention manager for Publix Supermarkets, received the first of what would be many reports that year concerning a mysterious plague of thefts. Initially, the missives trickled in from stores around Tampa, where Shultz is based. But Publix has more than 1,000 locations scattered through the Southeast. Some 400, mostly in Florida, fall under his purview, and soon, he was getting similar reports from all over the state: Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Orlando, Miami. The thieves seemed to be multiplying — and all they wanted was baby formula.....Tondreau-Leve eventually shifted operations to a storage facility, renting a single unit, then a double, filling it to capacity with head-high stacks of formula.....‘I wish she’d been locked up for as long as humanly possible for what she did. Had she used her wits to start a legit business, she could have been incredibly successful — a true entrepreneur.’....On July 2, Tondreau-Leve arranged to meet Powell in a Lowe’s parking lot for what was to be the largest deal of her career: 3,300 tubs of formula — six pallets’ worth. The load had a retail value of about $85,000. Tondreau-Leve had agreed to pay $33,000 in cash....In August 2016, a jury convicted Tondreau-Leve of charges including racketeering, dealing in stolen property and money laundering....

Direct HeadlineDeputies bust baby formula theft ring spanning 18 counties

Investigators say they stole about $85,000 worth of the items from stores like Publix, Winn-Dixie, and Walmart across the state....“When they would be stopped at the front door, then they would scream and holler and create a great disturbance upsetting the customers in the store, and they said, ‘One of our favorite things to say is, "The only reason you stopped me is because of my race'" — that was their statement, not ours,” Judd said....He said, then, they’d re-sell the items to the other three suspects, the so-called “fences."...Studies show businesses increase the prices of their products to make up for the loss of inventory....In this case, the loss spans across 18 different counties, including Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Volusia.

Same tragic story of this current Biden Administration.

Take an existing major problem within the United States, then compound it with idiotic public policy, wokeness, identity politics, let culture wars take priority over functional governance, enable criminals in every possible instance, drive up inflation and show inept corrupt "leadership"

Which all punishes every day working class American citizens.

But not just adults, this time its infants.

So right during a timeline where the Biden Administration wants more abortions, there seems to be less focus on feeding the babies that are already here.

Direct Headline: Baby formula maker: It could take up to 10 weeks to get product back in stores from affected facility

Abbott Laboratories says it is working to source formula from other facilities around the world.....The owner of a key baby formula manufacturing plant said Wednesday it is looking to restart its plant in as little as two weeks — but said it would take between six to eight weeks to get formula products back on store shelves once production gets going again....The shutdown of the facility, owned by Abbott Laboratories and located in Sturgis, Michigan, has prompted a severe shortage of infant formulas including Similac, Alimentum and EleCare. The plant was shut down from late February to early March pending a federal investigation into the deaths of two infants and reports of illnesses among other children who consumed certain baby formula products.....As much as 43 percent of normal supplies of formula were out of stock in U.S. grocery stores in the first week of May....

Direct Headline: TIMELINE SHOWS HOW AMERICA'S LARGEST BABY FORMULA PLANT CEASED PRODUCTION

September 2021: The FDA conducted a four-day inspection of the Abbott Laboratories plant in Sturgis, Michigan. The inspection report revealed the plant 'did not maintain' clean and sanitary conditions in at least one building that manufactured, processed, packaged or held baby formula. FDA officials also observed poor hand washing among Abbott plant staff who 'worked directly with infant formula.'..

October 2021: A whistleblower sends the FDA a 34-page document outlining potential concerns with the Sturgis plant. The document, which was made public by Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro in April 2022, was written by a former plant employee.  The employee accused the plant of lax cleaning practices, falsifying records, releasing untested infant formula, and hiding information during an FDA audit in 2019, among other issues.

January - March 2022: The FDA conducted multiple inspections at the Sturgis plant over the course of three months in 2022. A ten-page inspection report revealed multiple violations at the facility. The agency alleged the plant failed to ensure that all surfaces that contact infant formula were maintained to prevent cross-contamination. The report states the facility 'did not establish a system of process controls' to ensure the baby formula 'does not become adulterated due to the presence of microorganisms in the formula or the processing environment.' Officials also alleged the plant failed to disclose in an investigation report whether a health hazard existed at the facility. Additionally, the report stated plant workers were did not wear the 'necessary protective material' when working directly with infant formula....

February 17: U.S. health officials urgently warn parents against using three popular baby formulas manufactured at the Abbott plant in Michigan. Investigators claim the products were recently linked to bacterial contamination after an infant died and three others fell ill. Abbott voluntarily recalled several major brands and shut down its Sturgis plant. The FDA also said it is investigating four reports of infants who were hospitalized after consuming the formula, including one who died.

February 28: Abbott Laboratories expanded its recall of Similac baby formulas after a second infant who was exposed to the powdered baby formula died.

Week of April 24: The nationwide share of out-of-stock baby formula hit 40 percent. Texas, Tennessee, Missouri, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota, seemingly hardest hit by the shortages, reported out-of-stock rates of about 50 percent.

With the abortion rights question at the forefront of the national daily media cycle, the issue becomes how long can the left leaning activist  MSM try to shade down on this crisis? Team Blue's policies keep bringing death and destruction with them.

What's the narrative here? We'll push to have your children eliminated in the womb at all  costs, and if that fails, then we'll starve the rest out?

why is baby formula necessary ?

easy yes - but is it REALLY required/necessity ?

we are beginning to see how socialist countries work - you get/buy what's available, not what you want

increase wages to $12-15 an hour and tax the rich was what was promised to help lower class people ... are you saying it hasn't worked out like they said ?? shocking :(
Literally overheard people talking about this at the bar last weekend.  Any increases in pay, minimum wage hikes, raises, completely wiped out with inflation.  Gone. Means nothing.

Are you blaming “socialism” for what’s happening in a “capitalist” country?

When I first saw this story I didn't realize Abbott was Similac. Holy cow.

New parents, you have my sympathy. If anyone needs help with this mess and can think of a way that the FFA can pitch in, let us know.

Seriously, how hard it is to get the FDA on the phone and tell them to let Abbott ramp up production?  It's been 3 months.  This administration is a complete disaster.

Quality stuff.

Cammack was not critical of migrants receiving the formula but said the administration should put American parents first....“I don't know about you, but if I am a mother, anywhere anytime in America, and I go to my local Walmart or Target or Publix or Safeway or Kroger or wherever it may be that you shop and you are seeing their shelves and you are seeing signs that you are not able to get baby formula. And then you see the American government sending by the pallet thousands and thousands of containers of baby formula to the border, that would make my blood boil .... But what is infuriating to me is that this is another example of the America last agenda that the Biden administration continues to perpetuate.”

Correction for you. Clearly the "quality stuff" is going to the border instead of for actual American citizens.

Starving infants isn't a great way for Team Blue to try to desperately hold onto support from suburban women voters that is already being lost over inflation.

Sounds to me like the government is doing a much better job of providing for basic needs than capitalism.

Based on this and the alleged forthcoming Dobbs decision, I think we need to substantially expand the federal role in getting needed supplies to new parents.  Sounds like we're in agreement on that.  :hifive:

lol, we wouldn't be in this mess in the first place if the government wouldn't have erroneously shut down the Abbott manufacturing plant.

I don't believe so, but they seem to be doing a much better job of storage and distribution than the private sector at the moment. Maybe we should give them production too.

so capitalism makes it all , the Fed Govt just buys it and sends it places for non-Americans who are in this country illegally

mortality rates were not higher because of lack of formula fyi

Interesting.  This woman seems to disagree with you. And now I don't know who to believe!  On the one hand, I have this woman who is literally a historian who deals with infant feeding. On the other hand, as a passionate pro-lifer I'm sure you've given this a lot of thought and done your research.

Maybe it would help if you shared that research with me? I want to trust your casual dismissal of childhood mortality, but I'm just not sure.

When asked what immediate actions parents can take when they can't find formula, Jen Psaki offered great advice:

We would certainly encourage any parent who has concerns about their child’s health or well being to call their doctor or pediatrician

Correct.

To be more accurate and complete: the private sector makes it, and the federal government buys it and sends it to facilities it manages, which include but are not limited to immigrant detention facilities.

Do you not think they should do that? Open question for the board conservatives, in light of the letter Greg Abbott sent last night. Do you agree with him?

What an awful human being Greg Abbott is. I am so glad he is not my governor. People complain about Gavin Newsom, and I’m not in love with the guy either, but at least he’s a decent person.

This statement answers a lot of questions

Government contracts are always filled first. This is how the Obama Administration choked out the civilian ammunition market for so many years. Increased regulations to make producing ammunition more difficult, then making large government orders that took priority, driving up the price points to where civilians had limited to no access points and if they did, the prices became exponential over time.

The current compromise Abbott Laboratories is making here is they are allowing parents to get baby formula from them directly, but IIRC, via a waiver.

There are third party baby formula producers that cannot meet the hard vetting through the FDA, many parents are turning there now.

FDA regulations will not allow a "new" product line for baby formula to come to market without a 90 day holding period. The previous lines are being choked out because of the recall and from many parents essentially hoarding during the shortage. The stacking supply chain issues with the dairy industry and the general labor shortages are also in play.

This is a pretty complex issue.

The government was a vendor that probably had a contract with the manufacturer that got them first dibs on the supply.  Really no different than any other product (eg laptops, paper).  The optics of illegals getting formula while shelves are empty is awful, but that’s the way things work. I am sure Abbott knows that as the Chief Executive of Texas but politics are politics. Your average person doesn’t know the details of federal contracts and technically neither would Abbott   Get your digs in where you can

Awful human being?  No

Seems like this problem could have been avoided or minimized through free trade and aggressive enforcement of antitrust laws.

Personally I'd prefer if we nationalized child health care, but if we're really gonna leave babies vulnerable to the ebb and flow of capitalism we can at least do those two things.

Optics look fine to me, but to be fair I don't think babies deserve to starve to death just because their parents are from another country. It appears that Abbott disagrees with me on that point.

It’s a fine line because whatever they make will be sold out right away - whether it’s the government, or Wal-mart.
I don’t think it’s a fine line to say that Greg Abbott is an awful human being. Let’s be clear: he is awful for suggesting that our government should stop providing formula to the babies of undocumented immigrants who currently being detained in camps. That’s the awful part.

ETA he’s a lousy guy for many other reasons as well, but this one is probably the top of the list,
