Footballguys Interactive Magazine - The Scoop (1 Viewer)

So you ignored what improvements or features your customer wanted/asked about and announced that you'd instead be creating an amazing, revolutionary Ipad Magazine App.

You announced all this without ever having confirmation that it would be accepted by Apple.

You've now had to save face and essentially give it away for free this year after hyping it up massively for the last 6 weeks.

Am I correct so far?

In summary, you'v essentially ignored features your customers have been asking for for a while and then offered them an updated web format for your content? In 2012 people shouldn't really be expected to pay extra on top of a $30 subscription to have content displayed in a modern format.

Thanks, but not for me.
Just to point out... you're not expected to pay on top of your subscription
This year. And only because the app didnt get approved. Next year you will and based on the current iteration its not really added content, especially because you need to stay on the internet and it isnt truly optimized for a tablet. You might as well lug your laptop around and use DD. I was hoping to use my ipad for all my drafts this year. I still will, but this isnt as good as expected and without the offline mode it might end up useless to me and many others.

The format of this and even the DD at this point looks/feels old. I bought a subscription this year to support the site innovating into the app world. Hopefully there are improvements before august.
Couldn't agree more with these posts. It seems like a cop out for FBG's, and reading between the lines, this is all a 'oh crap, we didnt get approved. What do we do now???'Joe, have you ever thought about hiring a designer? if there is one thing your site and 'e-mag' is in desperate need of, its a new design.

I'll be taking my money elsewhere this year. I know FantasyFootballIndex is planning on releasing their entire magazine via iTunes app in the next few weeks...I look forward to that.
The itunes app market is sorely lacking a great FF app. Most are half arsed & shallow. The gen 1 FBG is probably still the best of the bunch but there is a big opportunity for someone to come in and define the category. There is definitely money being left on the table.

I saw the question asked above, but not answered. Will the articles in the magazine be duplicated in the normal subscription area of the actual website? If not, I see a problem with this. I am all for bonus extras for those who wish to pay for them (yes, I know it is free this year), but ALL the content should be available for traditional subscribers as well. Can we get a confirmation on this issue?
Yes, if there is a Footballguys article on the magazine, it will be on the website for Insider Subscribers. J

Hi HT,I don't disagree at all there. I see lots of opportunity. And I also think that we can improve on what we have. Thanks.

Great, thanks Joe. In that case, I have no problem at all with this extra method of accessing content. :) If someone does not wish to get the magazine in future years when it may cost extra, they can simply come to the website as usual.I did try out the non-Apple version, and it seems decent. It definitely organizes things better.

Thanks gandalas,The thinking is that we want the Magazine to basically be a subset of the Insider when it comes to content. For the guy who has an Insider already, the Magazine will be just a different way to view some of the same content he already has. And I'll be honest, I struggle with the whole idea of the semantics calling it the "Magazine" as it's really just a "light" version of the Insider Subscription. That might be a better way to talk about it. I dunno. We'd just started with the "magazine" as that was familiar. We'll see. You guys know us - we're always learning. J

This. Although I also realise this isn't for everyone and some people prefer basic. Which is why I'd also like to see you open up your data feeds etc and have a 'developers section' similar to MyFantasyLeague etc. People with some knowledge and design skills could thn do the work for you.
Thanks Don. I do agree that we'd likely have lots of folks that are more than capable to help. Let me think about this one.J

As a subscriber I don't see the big fail here. Wasn't the mag a tool to acquire subs? Its actually a bonus as its free for us .

I'm kind of curious about the process and behind the scenes stuff. After the rejection and fixing the things Apple had a problem would the release have been too late(August?) to really do the mags intended job?

anyways I'm sure J , DD & the rest of the writers are disappointed

Maybe better title is Preseason Draft Kit...that's how this type of content is normally described.

I got the magazine only and will be checking it out on iPad and PC.

That's exactly how I'd define this product - a draft kit. And compared to prices at other sites for their kits, $4.99 is a good value. Heck, I saw print magazines with $8 - $10 price tags at my local grocery store.

Holy Grail is still DD for iPad (how far out are we on that?). I'm planning on running the gotomypc ipad app to access DD remotely. Of course, if the draft location doesn't have interwebs, I'm ####ed.

Joe/David,

Love the FBG magazine. Would it be possible to include the players first names in the draft feature?

Another suggestion, can you add a print feature to the draft pages for us who won't have internet access at our drafts?

Yes, but you can read those anywhere. I like that I can use my iPad on airplanes (I travel a lot for work), on long road-trips (when I'm not driving), and even in the bathroom without an internet connection. As others have mentioned already, this "magazine" is not nearly as useful without an "offline" mode. If I need an internet connection, I will just go to the full site using my iPad. If I want to draft, I will have to use my laptop and DD. Since our draft is usually long, battery life on my laptop isn't, and I won't be able to plug in, I will most likely continue to use paper/pencil.My recommendations for FBGs:

1. Create a slick offline-capable magazine similar to the PDF version you had a few years back (which I thouoght was excellent reading) that can be updated regularly until the start of the season. Sell for $4.95.

2. Create iPad and Android tablet draft apps that can be taken offline. Basically an iPad DD. This is what most users will probably value most. Sell for $4.95.

3. Provide these for free for subscribers that pay the full $28.95.

Hi HT,Yes, for subscribers to the Insider, the Magazine really isn't that big a deal. It's a new way to view the same content they are already seeing in their Insider Subscription. The behind the scenes thinking honestly wasn't too frantic. Apple rejected the initial app and gave us a pretty big list of things they wanted to see changed. So we were looking at the time involved to make those changes. Plus the time it usually takes Apple to approve some thing which is around 2 weeks. And the big question was even then, we weren't assured it would be approved. So we were potentially looking at something like 3 weeks delay at the best case. And even then we weren't assured it would be approved. The big thing was that all the time we'd been doing this, I was feeling a lot of apprehension about putting all the eggs in the iPad basket. I love my iPad. I know tons of people do. But I also know tons of people don't have an iPad or Android tablet. So all this time I'm feeling worried in my gut that we're limiting ourselves to a ton of people. I kept telling myself that the iTunes store exposure would make up for it but I don't think I really ever believed it. So when Apple rejected us, we had 2 real courses of action. #1. Try to make the changes Apple wanted and hope that we'd be approved on round 2 and take a 3 week at best delay. vs #2 which was make it a web based subscription app that would work exactly like the Insider Subscription and sell it ourselves along side the Insider. That saved us about 2 weeks of time. And it opened this up to everyone, not just the iPad and Android tablet owners. For me, it was a pretty easy decision to open it up to everyone. But this is exactly like most every decision we make: I don't know if it's the right thing to do. But it's where we are and what we've decided to do. I'd say for next year, I'd like to have an App that is in the iTunes store and fully within the framework of what Apple wants. But right now, I think we'd be crazy not to have a similar product available for all the non iPad folks for sale right alongside the Insider. So the real answer is to have both I think. Which illustrates a good point I think in that we're constantly learning. The private responses I've received from folks happy they now have a shot at this with their non tablet device has been very strong. I think we made the right decision having something available for them. I don't know that I would have felt that as much with our original plan so I'm glad I learned something there.J

Yeah, I hear you. And Draft Kit was something kicked around. I really like the interactive part of it where you can enter your info and the thing changes dynamically based on your situation so we wanted to include "interactive". But yes, maybe next year we call it an interactive draft kit or something like that. Thanks.J

I agree it's the Holy Grail, jb. The trouble is may be as elusive as the Holy Grail. Right now, the answer is what you're doing with the gotomypc type connection app. But I'm with you about the worry of losing internet connection. The trouble is that the DD is a pretty powerful program and squeezing that into the iPad has been something we've been unable to do so far. Honestly don't have a time frame on when that might happen if it did.J

Since I am already a full subscriber, would it be possible to remove the link to upgrade to a full subscription? Not a major concern, but I always find it annoying when sites continue to try to sell me something I already purchased .

Love everything else about the magazine though. One suggestion for next year: have the magazine continue to update with all articles during the season for full subscribers. It really is a better way to read the site on a tablet. I would pay more to just have the whole site like this when I access it on my phone or tablet all year.

Thanks Empty,I hear you on the upgrade thing. Not sure I'm smart enough to have it pull off the guys that have bought but I'll ask the smart guys. And yes, I can see something season long for 2013. We're learning this year about what folks want and we'll see how that goes. Thanks for being a part of it.J

So are you guys still shooting for an iTunes app this year (August.) is that the plan?

Would love to see this thing in a mag format in an app, that would be awesome.

I want to compliment you guys on taking the constructive criticism and responding in this thread, that's what makes you great!

Looking forward to future iterations....

I'd settle for the functionality of the VBD Excel app on the iPad. - put in your scoring- it spits out a custom cheatsheet- the cheatsheet can be used to check off drafted players like the current draft mode of the magazine- all available offline of course. :P

Hi mph,No, we'll likely look to be on iTunes for the 2013 season.J

Am I missing something or is there no "overall" ranking or vbd/BPA category in draft mode? I think that is pretty important for draft mode, otherwise what's the point in entering your roster size and starting lineup requirements under customization?

First of all joe, i would like to thank you for your transparency on this stuff. That being said I think that thirst are pretty good suggestions. I would really like to see it as a slicker app that does work offline. I truly believe that if you build a quality product it will sell in the app store. I also agree with many of the others that draft dominator for iPad would rule! You could easily sell that stand alone for $5 if you could get that to work. It just seems like the idea of draft dominator was made for tablets. Just imagine being able to swipe to different views. I dont like the draft mode at all. I will definately not be giving up my laptop this year. If you did a nice job on these, I could see you charging something like $28.95 for pc access but $33.95 for pc and mobile access...$5 for preseason magazine, $5 for draft dominator standalone, or $8.99 for the complete pre season draft package. bottom line is it feels like it needs to be a more refined product to me but it definitely has potential.

Cool. If you get that and an off-line or caching in before people start drafting in August, then I think it's a pretty solid product for your first iteration.

Hey Joe,

I have not read the entire thread - so I do not know if I am repeating or not. But here's how I feel.

1. I am excited that you (FBG) wants to stay ahead of the curve with innovations, technology, etc.

2. I haven't had much of a chance yet to look through the interactive mag, but very curious about it as I don't get how it is different from just having access to the fbg site. (I am sure there is something I am overlooking here which may make sense after I check it out, but I am confused. Was the idea that you can bring your ipad to the draft and use a tool from the mag to help you? If so, is that really any different from bringing your laptop and using DD?)

3. My one fear with respect to point #1 - is that you focused so much on the ipad magazine this year, that it took a lot of time & effort away from everything else. And at the end of the day, you don't want to put your back to loyal subscribers just bc they do not have an ipad.

4. Also stemming off of point #1 - I absolutely get wanting to stay ahead of the curve. This is a business afterall and customers/subscribers/FF-players all over the country are willing to spend money on it. So I get wanting to be involved in any place where there is potential to add revenue. HOWEVER, you do have stuff right here already on the website that is great, yet could be tweaked. Example: Most people LOVE Dodds' perfect draft articles. Yet most years, it comes out later than originally announced it would. I have been a long-time subscriber (since yr1 of FBG) and from my recollection it has been released late more than on-time. And the fix is NOT to not announce a release date (that way you cannot miss it). That does not work bc then you just put it out when you want - it isn't technically "late" as no release date was announced. But in the end, if 80% of us have already had our draft - then it wasn't really worthwhile.

I know that was wordy, but I hope you get my point. My point is simply that you do some of the best things here. Dodds' articles, projections from multiple staffers, strategy articles, weekly waiver wire articles, Top 200 moving forward updated every week, etc. And that's why I keep coming back. But I will admit I get frustrated when I have drafted in 4 of my 5 leagues before the Perfect Article comes out. Or when I am putting in for waivers on a Tuesday night at 10pm and the Top 200 moving forward is still not out.

So I do look forward to checking out the magazine as soon as I get a chance. But I do hope all that time and effort does not take away from the other things that are already great for the site, but need tweaking (mostly in terms of timely release).

Later,

HTF

How often will the data/rankings update and will it do so automatically if I just leave it open a safari tab on the ipad continuously? Or do I need to close out of it and reopen to update info?

Is there a way to notify us if there is new content in a section? Or do we have to click on every section and check?

Also, dates next to the articles would be a nice addition.

Right now no way to notify of new content. It's just like the website in that regard. I do agree we should have dates - on the list of things to look at.J

Have you guys tested this at all?

Is there a way to notify us if there is new content in a section? Or do we have to click on every section and check? Also, dates next to the articles would be a nice addition.
Right now no way to notify of new content. It's just like the website in that regard. I do agree we should have dates - on the list of things to look at.J
Don't sell the web site short here, Joe ;)On your main page, There is "The Latest" down the left side of the page that serves exactly the function of a "what's new" in terms of articles, content, rankings, whatever.

Ok Guys - a little update.

As with anything, there are always tons of things to do. But we have to prioritize. My two big things I'm trying to see us do are:

#1. Some sort of caching solution so at least some of the content is viewable offline.

#2. Overall draft list for Draft Mode.

Doug is working hard on both of these and we're putting out August 1 as the "hope so" date to have them. Please don't kill us if we don't hit that but that's the target date we're shooting for.

The overall list for the draft mode isn't a big deal. The offline caching thing is a huge deal and way more complex. I know we won't have everything available offline but we're working hard to at least get some offline functionality for you.

Thanks for hanging with us.

Holy Grail is still DD for iPad (how far out are we on that?). I'm planning on running the gotomypc ipad app to access DD remotely. Of course, if the draft location doesn't have interwebs, I'm ####ed.
Honestly don't have a time frame on when that might happen if it did.

Yes, we've used this and it works great. But it's really more a credit to the 3rd party stuff than to us. These products really are good about letting you access your pc. Very little if any latency. We'll do a writeup here sometime with the exact steps.J

For sure. I thought you meant some sort of email or push notification. Screen real estate is obviously super valuable on the tablet but let me add a "what's new" section to the wish list. It'll be pretty far behind offline use but we'll take a look.J

I'd like to see the date an article/link was updated assuming that they will be updated throughout the pre-season.

Thx. Just found out my big draft will be held at a house in the country with no internet, so I'll be relying on 3G. Hope it works that way!

ok, I'm in.

I've been doing the FF for a long time. I read a lot of articles from around the web, I'm usually up to date on news, and I try to follow the whole league pretty closely. I'm not willing to pay $28 for more content/discussion. However, I am willing to pay $5 for projections that will be updated throughout the pre-season.

Projections are tough to maintain. I've done them myself before and know how tricky they can be. There aren't very many free projections out there on the web - not useful ones, anyhow. A $5 pricepoint for 4 sets of projections is well worth it to me.

maybe that's something to consider when you roll out plans next year... I'm not willing to buy a full subscription, but I am willing to spend a little bit for good data. If you roll the magazine into the regular subscription and don't have it a-la-carte, I'm out. I would probably be in for a "draft kit" style pre-season only package; projections are all that's important to me.

Thanks!

 I think people are most concerned with rankings being available off-line for draft-mode. So I would focus there initially.

I am enjoying the iPad access to the Preseason Magazine, and also noted that in Draft Mode, would be nice to have all positions mixed in a single list. Nice to have it broken out for later in the draft when you are position hunting, but combined list is pretty critical for most of the draft.questions/requests:1. In the Draft Mode, are the rankings based on VBD numbers from on Dodd's rankings/projections?2. For Depth Chart, I click show/hide OL/IDP, but each time I switch teams, it goes back to showing everything again (it doesn't 'remember' my choice).3. For Depth Chart, can we get just a scrolling laundry list of ALL teams?4. Is there a Rookie Rankings section?thanks! Looks great so far!

Glad to see this is included for 2012. With that said, I have no desire to re-up for a multi-year subscription at this point, knowing that some content will likely (in the future) be withheld and only given to those who pay an additional fee ON TOP of the subscription fee.

Is this how businesses feel when they say they can't make long-term business decisions when there is too much uncertainty coming down the line (i.e. taxes)? I certainly don't want to be locked into a multi-year subscription to FBG when I don't know what the future is going to look like (subscribers not getting full benefits unless they pay even more, etc.).

Thanks for the update and including this content, at least for 2012.

Slight hijack....any shot of adding the ability to participate in mock drafts/auctions to this site a la ESPN's fantasy section? Those mocks are great but 80% of participants either quit after a few minutes or don't take the thing at all seriously. If you had guys entirely from this forum participating, the mocks would be that much more fulfilling and beneficial. Henderson could get this up in 6-8 hours I'd guess.

Love the interactive magazine.

Are the rankings supposed to be customized for our league scoring? I put in my scoring and the rankings looked pretty generic. To see I raised the points that QBs get for TDs to 50. Rodgers is still listed as the 5th pick.

Wasn't looking for a email or anything. More like the title bolded or a star or something if the section has new content since the last time it was accessed.
