***official*** all things Microsoft Xbox One (1 Viewer)

This was my assumption. All anyone did after the PS4 reveal was talk #### about how they didn't even show the actual console or what it could do.
Sony showed a bunch of games (many of them multiplats but a few exclusives too) and included live, on-stage gameplay. Honestly, anybody who was talking #### about not showing the actual physical console is an idiot.

Edit: Admittedly, it was a little weird and off-beat when Sony neglected to show the console at its reveal, but for rational people it was one of those "Oh well who really cares" moments that's good for a few jokes but isn't a big deal. The reason why Microsoft is being almost universally trashed right now is because they neglected to show games for their gaming console. Obviously they can fix that at E3, but it's pretty clear right now that if you're launching a console, "games but no console" >>>> "console but no games."

Absolutely agreed. I'm just talking about the initial group-think buzz. With Sony it was "but where's the PS4?" and with Microsoft it's "but where are the games?"I think both are almost equally dumb, but see where those wanting to see some of these exclusive X1 titles are coming from a bit more. But it's so early, with E3 right around the corner, that I don't really personally care.

Uh, this was a CONSOLE reveal, and that is exactly what was done.

Don't worry, Sony "revealed" what their console looks like yesterday.

So unbelievably stupid.

explain to me why i would want mycable box going through my xbox..
Explain to me why I would want to take a phone call on my MP3 player.
im serious, i read it wont have dvr capabilities for television so serious question.i still need a cable box so why have both on
Many providers will not need a box. IPTV providers, specifically (Uverse, FIOS, and likely cablecard customers as well).

DVR era is nearly over. Everything is converging to on-demand now.

This is one step closer to the entire nation cutting the cable, a move that is happening in accelerating numbers without this and with things like Roku. This system takes XBMC type functionality to the masses.
Already been confirmed that it does not support Cablecard. So yeah, you will need a box from any cable or satellite provider as well as Uverse and FiOS.
You can still do a no box uverse on 360 if you are willing to pay 125, today. I would be stunned if you couldn't roll that in this round.

That's disappointing about cablecard. That was part of the rumor stuff so I thought it would have gone through.
I at least now see the disconnect. I assumed none of the things listed cablecard etc was not available and it turned out they are not. I definitely could see how valuable it would be if you didn't need another box but how I thought it was set up it seemed redundant to have cable then connect it to the xbox and have that also on just to watch tv... But anyway if the Xbox could act as a slingtbox now that would be awesome...

And I hate connectivity to just play games...

I don't know why everyone is so surprised about this. Every report that came out about this event (I think even the announcement about the event) said it was going to introduce the console and the games would be shown at E3. Wasn't this conference scheduled for half the time of the PS4 one? They didn't have to fill in 3-4 months before their next chance to show things. It was just an introduction.

I think part of it is that E3 is only a few weeks off. If you're not going to show anything at your "console reveal," then why not just wait until E3 to do the reveal?

But then again E3 is only a few weeks off. Maybe Microsoft will come out an wow everybody with an awesome lineup of launch titles, at which point nobody will be talking about today's event any more.

Edit: That last sentence isn't sarcasm, by the way. It is inconceivable that Microsoft would try to launch a new console without a stable of AAA hardcore launch titles. We just don't know what they are yet besides Forza.

Haven't kept up with this launch but is there Blu-Ray or some other HD disc drive? MSFT cannot be using a DVD drive, right?

There's a BR drive, but I believe it's just for watching movies. Apparently all games will be installed on the HD, so you'll never need the disc again once you've installed it. I used to think this sort of feature was no big deal, but now that I've acclimated myself to PSN games, I see a lot of appeal to not having to mess with discs every time you want to play.

Any idea if it willbe backwards compatible?

It's confirmed that neither the XB1 nor PS4 is backwards compatible. Allegedly the PS4 is going to have some sort of backwards compatibility via Gaika, but I have no idea how this will work or whether it will be available at launch or whether there will be a charge for this.

Having said that, BC is a grossly-overrated feature IMO. I had a BC PS3 until the BR failed, and I played a grand total of one previous-gen game on it ever with no desire to play another. This is at the very bottom of my list of worries with either console.

Since things are getting away from discs. Will games ever be sold on flash drives that are protected (not erasable) instead of a disc?

Doubtful. I'd imagine that the next gen after this one we'll be skipping straight to digital distribution (and the elimination of used/shared games altogether).

The optimistic answer is that hopefully it gives them more time to go through these 15 exclusive games. Aren't E3 press conferences usually an hour and a half? This thing was an hour so that would have only left a half hour for the games.

Wholeheartedly agree with this. I've gone back to play maybe 2 or 3 games for an hour or so, and then that's that. In terms of games, the past is best left there. I'll keep my 360 for awhile after the new launch (as I suspect most will), but hinging a purchase of a new console on whether I can play Halo 2? Not likely.

Having never owned a PS2 or PS3, I'd prefer the BC on the PS4. While that won't be a feature, they have stated that PS2/PS3 games will be available for download on the PS4. If I do indeed go that route, that's what I'll have to do. At least I do have the option.

That said, I really haven't heard if XBLA games will transfer from the 360 to the X1. That would be more important to me than BC.

I play older games fairly regularly. I can't tell you how many times I have completed KOTOR for example. It's almost like comfort food. I don't have to figure out anything and I can just have some fun with it. I really prefer the first Halo to the stuff that followed although Halo 2 wasn't bad. It isn't necessarily a deal breaker but it's a nice option to have.

After digging into this a bit more I'm giving this thing a solid meh. It looks like a minor interface upgrade with some pass-thru which would have been better done with a more firm handshake. It isn't clear to me why a 360 patch couldn't handle 95% of the interface upgrade.

Games just don't have that much more to go graphics wise. It's all the MP experience now. SP experience is about maxed out from what hardware can provide insofar as graphics and motion. Maybe this brings more to the table for MP, but so much of MP is out of the console's control.

They need to eliminate load times.

A simple SSD would nearly eliminate that.

8GB ram should help that imo.

I like it, but I haven't normally bought each generation of every system. I also play games on a significant lag to save coin, with the exception of Halo.

I remember a thread on this board a few years back (2 or 3 I guess) where some people thought that we were a long way away from doing away with physical media for games and movies. It looks like we're almost there for both now.

Yeah it still is a ways off. There are still an awful lot of people that can't get high speed internet. I think discs will be with us for a while yet.

I had forgotten how GroveDiesel is basically GoonSquad for PS.
:lmao:I've owned one Playstation product and I only bought that one because all my friends that game had already purchased PS3s. I would have preferred a 360. I don't give a crap who makes the system, I just want the best console gaming experience.
and based on limited info in two annoucements where almost everyone says the systems look about equal you have already concluded that will be the PS4

With Microsoft basically saying the XB1 will require an internet connection, I think we can assume that folks on dialup are going to be left in the cold anyway. With the move to expand into being an entertainment hub, I think it wouldn't be a waste to spend $5-700 on a console when you couldn't use at least 50% of it's features.

Have you been on the internet in the past 24 hours? "Everyone" is not saying that the systems look about equal. If there's a consensu opinion out there, it's that the Xbox One is mainly an entertainment hub that will also play games, while the PS4 is mainly a gaming platform that also does media. It's like these companies aren't even competing over the same consumers anymore.

Also seems like most of these entertainment features are geared towards the US. Almost like MSFT is punting on the global market.

Yesterday certainly has me leaning in the PS4 direction, but I may just go PC altogether. Nothing at all they showed that I care about.

They do look "about" equal. But we already know the PS4 has faster RAM, a better GPU and most likely a slightly faster CPU. It also has several extra chips specifically designed to offload things like AI and voice chat, something Microsoft has not mentioned for the XB1. So far, from what we know of the hardware and how Sony and Microsoft have crafted their message, it seems to me that Sony is heavily targeting gamers while Microsoft is casting a larger net. Those are my first impressions. They are subject to change. I think both Microsoft and Sony kind of suck as companies so I really don't care who makes what console. Frankly, this could be the generation that sends me back to computer gaming.

But those transistors, man! You know that the XBox One has to include Blast Processing!

Here's a good list that cuts through all the BS and lays out all the facts about the XB1.

Yikes. So the microphone is ALWAYS on?! No way does the XB1 ever end up in my bedroom...Wonder if that is the case for the camera as well? You know, the one that now has infrared?
Is the PS4 any different in this regard? I know the Eye ships with it.
I don't think the Eye is used to turn on the system. The microphone is always on so that it can listen for you to turn the unit on.

Everybody is jumping all over Microsoft -- understandbly so -- over the Kinect microphone, blocking used games, and requiring an internet connection. I'm pretty sure Sony has not definitively ruled out any of these for the PS4.

Is the Eye essential to the functioning of the device, or is that still unknown?

I have read people saying the Kinect will be.

Given that the Xbox has better exclusives than the ps3, I'm not exactly ready to crown ps4 as the system for gamers at this point. IMO you guys are reading way too much into some snippets from these presentations.

Sony has officially stated that the Playstation 4 will not block used games. They never said whether it will require a fee to unlock it. They also officially stated that it does not require an always-on internet connection. Again, it wasn't reported whether it'll need to ping, though. So Sony did answer those questions, but left it open so that they can say "oh yes, ours requires that too" and not look like the bad guy since they reported it last. I doubt PS4 will have an always on microphone.

Wow, what spin. This reads like some kooky political posts. MS released specs on their console yesterday. The games will follow. PS3 was dusted in the last game round, nothing to suggest this won't happen again.

Is the Eye essential to the functioning of the device, or is that still unknown?

I have read people saying the Kinect will be.
I think I may have answered this in the previous post, but if the Eye is required, it hasn't been reported. The PS Eye and Move has not performed as well as the Kinect did.

Good to know. I find the idea of an always on mike and camera when the system is activated quite creepy.

Given that the Xbox has better exclusives than the ps3, I'm not exactly ready to crown ps4 as the system for gamers at this point. IMO you guys are reading way too much into some snippets from these presentations.
Like I mentioned earlier, it's not just these two presentations. It's a role reversal that's been playing out for the past several years.

The Xbox had better exclusives than the PS3. In 2008. These consoles traded places 3-4 years ago.

:goodposting:

Everybody is jumping all over Microsoft -- understandbly so -- over the Kinect microphone, blocking used games, and requiring an internet connection. I'm pretty sure Sony has not definitively ruled out any of these for the PS4.
That's what I mean. Theoretically Sony could be planning on implementing the exact same DRM scheme the Microsoft has announced. Everybody was relieved when they said that the PS4 wouldn't block used games, but I'm pretty sure they left the door wide open to requiring a "fee" (which is actually full retail price by the way) to play them. I recall them hinting at some sort of ability for developers to implement restrictions if they wanted to, but I don't remember the details of that or even if I'm remembering it correctly.

Basically I just find it really hard to believe that one company would unilaterally roll out the kind of DRM that Microsoft just did without the other one following suit. It would be interesting to see what would happen if Sony and Microsoft went different routes on that, but it just seems unlikely.

Then the future itself is creepy. You can prettymuch see that voice activation and touch/gesture controls will probably be the norm, not just for games, but for tons of things.

I'll bet most folks in 1950 would find putting vacation pictures up for the world to see "creepy".

It is. As is publically posting pictures of yourself

Also I'm not sure why any of that stuff is neccesary. It isn't an improvement over a controller in hand.

Mandatory internet connection, Kinect camera, and always on microphone. That trifecta makes it easy to say this device will never be in my house.
