What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (2 Viewers)

No more 12% stouts for me, I need to move to something a bit less aggresive. But at this point pretty much everything is a step down so I should be in good shape.
Double IPAs havent been tasting too good to me lately...I think the sweetness is why...I think Im gonna stick to single IPAs and APAs for a while.

Springtime.....time for lagers! And hefe's! Time for me to get the #### out of here (work) so I can have a beer.

Spring isn't a good time for hop heads either. Generally bocks are less on the hop side and more on the malty/sweet side. Then again, I can't really think of a seasonal beer that focuses on hops and bitterness. Alesmith and Hair of the Dog break the rules with their Xmas beers but thats about it.

I guess, but here in Florida the seasons dont change much...Its been 70+ in the daytime for weeks now....Im not a fan of too many lagers, but hefe's are pretty good in moderation....

You are correct. I was in no shape to think last night! Got started pretty early and paying for it now.

Anyone here ever come up with a good ocmbo?
Sorry Wingnut, but that sounds like ####.Just got back from the beer store. Since I shipped Wingnut pretty much every good beer I had remaining in my house yesterday (26.0 pounds worth, according to UPS), I had to restock.

I picked up:

1 twelve pack of Sierra PA

1 sixer of Anderson Valley Boont Amber (just popped one)

1 sixer of Drake's IPA

1 sixer of Hales Mongoose IPA

1 sixer of Sudwerk Marzen

1 sixer of Deschutes Mirror Pond

2 bombers of Hoptown IPA

2 bombers of Hoptown Old Yeltsin Stout

2 bombers of Racer 5

And somehow managaed to cram most of it in the fridge. The G/F is going to be pissed when she gets home. Ah, well. That's life. I am set for awhile now anyway.

Pic for those interested

PS: I hate Fro too.
Hoptown IPA - I like this beer. Its everything you want in an handcrafted beer.Hales Mongoose IPA - I went through a sixer of this last time I was bevmo. NOt so good. Decent.

That is spot on what I think about the Mongoose. OK, but nothing I would seek out again in the future.

I did the horizontal tasting of the Russian River beers yesterday. The three beers couldn't be any more different.

The IPA was simple, plain. No depth. I didn't really like it that much. It wasn't that memorable for me.

Pliny the Elder was good as always. Has the grapefruit/citrusy thing going on. Solid bitter finish with a slight pine aftertaste.

But the Pliny the Younger was in a league of its own. Didn't taste like a triple IPA, wasn't bitter enough for triple the hops....But the alcohol was there. And it had a sweetness to it, almost like they threw some candi sugar in. Astoundingly good beer.

Also had the Russian River Little White Lies and a bottle of Natte from the Netherlands.

Nice thing about the Stuffed Sandwich is they sell beer to go. We were chatting about beer and all the beers that we can't get our hands on. Then it happened. Sam gave me a beer out of his personal collection. He said he had three and by giving me one he only had two left.

Which beer? THEE beer. The undisputed #1 beer in the world.

The Westvleteren Abt 12 :excited:

And I got a few friends to go along with it. Here's my lineup. Spent too much money but it was a good weekend.

Oh, I can get Alesmith. I believe It was FatMax who said he couldn't get Alesmith.Next Friday they are selling Barrel Aged Wee Heavy's at the Alesmith brewery. Only 240 bottles created. This, sadly, I won't get.

Lets do it. I've got some other IPA's available that you might like as well. I'll check my local beer mongers inventory and run some names by you.

Started with a Southern Tier Old Man Winter ale - hoppy brown thing that went very well with the massive slab o' burger I had for dinner. Followed that up with:

Middle Ages Tenth Anniversary Ale - 10% Double IPA. Big, hoppy, malty, just a wonderful brew. Followed THAT up with:

DFH 90 minute IPA - Earthy hoppy malty nose, beautifully balanced fruity hoppy flavor, with little of the fusel alcohol burn I usually get from DFH's bigger brews. First time I've had it since the Randallized version knocked my socks off at a BA fest a couple of years back.

I have now achieved cruising altitude.

Just PM me or list any DFH you want and how many....all come in 12oz only....I can get most of em...I dont know if you can get Great Divide there or not but I can get those as well...hell just look thru this thread to find out most of what I can get...I cant do a big trade right now, but something like 6 12oz beers (or 3 bombers worth) is doable.

Skylord, who are you at BA? Wondering if you are reviewing ...
WestsidethreatBut I don't review much online. My rationale is that I drank hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of beers before BA or RB came about. I could never go back and review all of them. And if I can't do something all the way I don't want to do it at all. Its the obsessive compulsive in me....all I think about are the beers that slipped thru the cracks.

The thought of going back and reviewing that many beers is a massive undertaking that I'm not prepared to do. Going back and clicking the ratings stars in Netflix was bad enough! I could do actual number ratings and not write ups but I feel like thats cheating.

I'm all good with doing a big trade. You've seen my lineups so you know my beer budget. I'm not a rich man, just a man with his priorities. But I'm cool with a few bombers as well. You guys will have to edumecate me on to how package and ship beers.

When I first got onto BA I was obsessive about reviewing. Hell, I drove to Boston for the very first BA get together and worked the first four fests. Now? Not so much. I'd rathersit back and enjoy the beer without a notepad in hand.bakes here, sponberg there.

Wingnut's beer packages are always awesome. Here is a rundown. Put each bottle in it's own ziplock bag. Put a #### load of bubble wrap around each bottle. Then put them in a box and put enough filler material so that they do not move during transit. That's pretty much it.I've been through two (with the third on its way) trades with wingnut and one with Kilgore Trout and have had no problems on either end.

I started reviewing beers just to keep track of what I have sampled. I can't count how many times I've been at the beer store wondering, "Have I tried that? I think I have, but I'm not sure." Plus, with the recent trading, I've got a chance to sample beers that I might not have a chance to drink otherwise.

Ive slowed down on the reviews myself...In the last year Ive tried about 200 beers but have only reviewed about 70 or so....If Im in front of the PC while drinking a new beer I might write a review, but otherwise screw it. Reviewing every new beer gets to be a hassle. Most beers I trade for I review though cause theyre usually really good and if I go through the trouble of trading for em, I might as well review em!

Thats actually why I started rating on Netflix. One movie in paticular... I'd rent it, turn it on and watch if for 20 minutes. Then I'd start wondering...have I seen this? Then within 10 minutes I'd figure out I hated the movie and turned it off previously...and I'd turn it off now. Four months later I'd repeat the process because I didn't remember I rented it. I did that so many times I now use Netflix as my memory bank.Wine I can't remember either. I don't know why.

Before BA and RB I had this book by Bob Klein called The Beer Lovers Rating Guide. He had rated 1200 beers. As I drank beers I would check them off in that book. But one day it got to a point that most of the beers I was drinking weren't in his book. A lot of that has to do with the microbrew boom. I always hoped he would release another book with his latest ratings. The last published copy was Oct 2000.

Interestingly enough I still have the book. Just pulled it off the shelves. Here's his top beers:

Rogue Shakespeare Stout - 4.8

Chimay Premiere - 4.7

Sam Adams Triple Bock - 4.7

Aass Jule Ol - 4.5

Xingu Black Beer - 4.5

A few 4.4's

 Thats basically all there is to it. I skipped the plastic baggies on my most recent trade, but I made up for it with what may be my finest packing job yet as far as wrapping and keeping them from moving around. Those puppies arent going ANYWHERE inside the box.

Ive found that having them not move around in the package is just as important as the amount of packing material...as long as you have a cushion between the bottles and the sides of the boxes, and something in between the bottles themselves in case they do collide in shipment...Bubble wrap, peanuts, newspaper, whatever you can find. When packed, if you can shake the box and not hear ANY movement its probably good to go. Ive also found that boxes with cardboard dividers work GREAT in keeping them from moving around...just put something underneath and on top of each beer to keep it snug.

Max also does some nice packing...Never any breakage or leaks. And all great beer to boot :excited:

Hey Wingnut or FatMax

Whats the cost difference in shipping two 12 oz's vs three? Culdeus is asking in the group one thread.

I can't imagine it being more than about a dollar more. Probably less. When I sent 2 bottles, each package was about 3-4 lbs. Using UPS's cost calculator to ship from VA to MA, 4 lbs is $9.21, 5 lbs is $9.52 and 6 lbs is $9.68.

I agree with 3Cs. The difference is probably negligible. The biggest difference that I have found is whether you're shipping it to a residential address or business address. Shipping to a residential is more expensive, but not all that much. Probably 20% more. This is based on UPS. Wingnut uses FedEx. I'm not sure about their pricing structure.

Victory Yellow Monkey...9.5% alcohol...
Golden Monkey.I was actually at the Victory Brewpub yesterday: had the cask conditioned versions of HopDevil and Uncle Teddy's Bitter. Took home a 6pack of the 10 year alt, and a growler of the Tripilsner.

if you're talking about the box you sent me.... i almost  when i opened it. those babies weren't so much as budging a centimeter. shoulda taken pics. :(

Wait till FatMax sees how HIS box is packed....identical to yours, but I double boxed his because of the number of beers (13 or 14) and the weight of the box (20+lbs).

Per normal, my packaging is going to be inferior then. I did the same crap I always do. Single box, zip lock, and a hell of a lot of bubble wrap.

As long as they make it intact (and they always do), thats all that counts in the end! :banned:

My Costco just started carrying that Sam Adams variety pack with the Brown ale, Black lager, etc. For me, I get to have the Scotch ale which I haven't had in a very long time.

How does everybody else feel about smoked beers?

Smoked beers? Like, as in rauchbier? I went to Bamberg 2 years ago. Had never heard of or tried it. Absolutely loved it. But it's not something you can have too many of. I went overboard. :( My haul tonight. 11 Sam Adams. Working on number 12. Why did I let an F on a report card piss me off so much? :(

You stink. No, seriously, you do. Cask Hop Devil is one of the great pleasures on this earth. :banned:  I still remember my first trip to Victory. Came in from the west. You can't see the freaking place from the west. Covaleski is one hell of a brewer and a really cool dude to boot. Two of their ex-assistant brewers recently reopened the brewpub in Pittsfield MA - outstanding beer and very good food as well. Highly recommended if you head outside of the 309 corridor - but with all of the great breweries and brewpubs in SE PA, is there really a need to?
