Draft Guides - which to get (again)? (1 Viewer)

I got PFW two years ago and was happy with it. I didn't always agree with the final ranking, but thought the writeups were very good.

On everyone's advice, I got Coyle last year. I thought it was exactly the opposite; the rankings seemed to be right on, but the writeups sucked - everyone sounded like they were good at everything in the writeups, which made them worthless. There wasn't really a summary for a player, either - just a series of blurbs about everything he does well.

I also picked up something from FFToday last year called something like the Rookie Scouting Portfolio. I thought the writeups were very detailed and gave a lot of depth, but that the summary information was weak and the rankings were just horrible.

So... at this point I see positives and negatives for each option. I'm leaning toward getting the FFToday thing and maybe PFW.

What are others doing?

I get Coyle, PFW and FFToday (Waldman). Used to get Kiper as well, but am dropping it this year. I agree with you that the Coyle rankings are good, the FFToday writeups are good and the PFW is the best of both.

of course the FBG magazine isn't a straight rookie scouting guide & is far more wide ranging, but does have rookie write ups...

i like the sporting news magazine & it is just about $7-$8

usa today sports weekly has a paper magazine draft special for about $5

i subscribe to PFW & so get the guide free (its around $15 sold separately)

i get coyle & kiper & probably will again, but i find kiper less essential (pretty good recaps of prep & college career, though)...

i like coyle best, but it is most expensive (kiper about $25, i think coyle is like $50 or so)...

you are right, coyle isn't so good for negatives on prospects, but because i'm collating half a dozen or more sources, i already have that covered... you could be right, coyle may not be an ideal stand alone guide if some intended to use it that way...

i guess i like frank a lot because he seems to have pretty thorough coverage including defense of top prospects between his staff... also, i could probably cite other examples, but he made what i thought was a really good high profile call on fitzgerald a few years ago... nearly everybody was high on him, of course, but he called him the best WR prospect in past decade since randy moss, & i found that to be pretty accurate... so i have found him to be very useful in making fine grained distinctions between elite prospects...

i also like fact that he uses comp players (current or former NFL players with similar physical attributes & traits & skill set) that i find often very relevant... sporting news does this also, but arguably not as well, imo... having an extensive working knowledge of comp players is hugely important in scouting...

i agree, you have to be careful in vetting more mid-tier prospects, & i don't always agree with how many players he lumps into future NFL starter category, & as noted, is probably best used in conjunction with at leat 1-2 other guides, for a basis of comparison on overly optimistic profiles...

I go with the sporting news' NFL draft guide whenever I can get them...I like their analysis of the rookies and I credit them for my picking up anquan boldin in my dynasty league his rookie year. As far as I know, who explained that boldin runs a 4.4/40 when healthy and the reason he ran a 4.6 at the combine was because he was recovering from surgery. In fact they called him the best wr after the catch of that rookie class.

The FFToday guide is now ready - I just downloaded it.

It's something like 350 pages... that's a lot of time to spend on the crapper over the next few weeks.

I'll be headed to Barnes and Nobles to pick up me a copy.

I use KC Bob's rankings (soon to be added to NFLDraftguys.com). The only negative is his rankings don't come out until a week or two until the draft.

:goodposting:

I enjoy PFW's mag, although it's not nearly as good as when Buschbaum was doing it. And the Sporting News one is pretty worthless. The FFToday guy is much better than I expected.

GMJr.com Not cheap but excellent evaluations.
Just picked up the Sporting News draft guide. The same guy that writes the GM Jr. publication is now primarily responsible for the Sporting News draft guide content.

the 4th & goal films DVD has been cancelled this season... it seemed like mine was taking a while, & the cust serv person i talked to said it was due to insufficient orders... they will try again next season with a different business model (sponsor)...

:bag: Matt Waldman has an excellent eye for talent and I definitely trust his observations.
Thanks Bloom, likewise... :goodposting: Glad you like it Aaronstory...
If you did IDP, I'd only buy one draft guide.
Good to know...If I had 48 hours in a day, I'd honestly do it. It's still a possibility though. I'll be thinking about 2008's version soon. Trying to enjoy some sleep for at least a week or two :moneybag:

I'm not sure eactly why but the Lindy's Pro Football draft guide is very similar to the sporting news' draft guide. That's also another alternative.
