Poverty Level (1 Viewer)

Where do they come up with this figure? I would think you could triple that and still be considered poverty level.

http://money.cnn.com/2014/10/16/news/economy/48-million-americans-poverty-census-bureau/index.html?hpt=hp_t4
I've said it before. Poverty in America compared to other countries means you have indoor plumbing, only a 42" flat screen tv, and are 60 lbs overweight. (except for Peens maybe)That's the number because that's how it is
I remember you saying that before. It was pretty stupid then, too.

Being overweight is from processed food with no nutrition that is cheaper.

Indoor plumbing is installed just about everywhere in this country. It is not a rare luxery

You can get an old flatscreen for less than $100 dollars. They dont even make the old style televisions.

What are you talking about?

I liked the line in the article about how people are poor because they are cashing in stocks to pay for vacations. What?

Oh.

Yeah the poor are really living high on the hog in those other countries.

The poor in this country have many advantages over the poor in other countries. However, they still have many disadvantages compared to the average American. Where do we want to set the standard?

Completely agree.

Still - my statement is accurate and I think we agree.

It's absolutely true.

Go to Sub-Saharan Africa, Yemen, Tajikistan or Afghanistan among other places and you see the definition of poverty. It is relative however, but I feel a whole lot less sympathetic to those in poverty in the U.S. than I do of those in poverty in Tchad. In places like that, poverty is really akin to survival.

It seems you arent poor unless you live in a cave and capture squirrels to eat.

Does anyone take in to consideration the cost if living here compared to chad?
Lots of poor people in Chad with internet connection who have the wherewithal to spend their time on the internet and argue with people on footballguys.com

Good comparison, Carnegie.

Well I was talking about here in the US. I agree with you that many people in those places live in real poverty. The article is talking about the US though. I dont know how a family of 4 can live on 23K a year. Maybe they live in a cardboard box or something.

Not arguing that at all, a family of four living in the U.S. on $23k is not going to have it easy at all. It is not survival for your life though, which was my point.

If a poor person decided to build their own home and start farming for themselves will the government here allow that?

No they wont. They harrass the people in tent cities. The poor in america are forced to be dependent on assistance because they are not allowed to live independently.

I honestly didnt read the article

Is the 23k just salary?

23k is obviously hard to live on in the US BUT...... 23K, with section 8 paying for your rent, food stamps every month and free healthcare might be like you are making 50-70K and having a to pay for those necessitates?

I'm curious if you guys do the opposite. Do you say Jack Welch, who has a net worth of $750 million, isn't wealthy because Bill Gates with a net worth of $81 billion?

Yeah all the time.

This is eerie because I was just trying to prove this EXACT point to someone at Applebees earlier.

I do discuss with students this concept and usually use the idea of football players vs team owners as an idea of the relativity of wealth.

Were you telling Julia Stewart the CEO of DineEquity? DineEquity owns Applebees and they only paid her $5m in 2013. Maybe one day she will know what it is like to be wealthy.

Do you tell the students their family of four making sub $20,000 a year isn't poor, because someone in Africa lives in a hole?

Yes, absolutely. Some of the most important conversations/assignments come from these difficult topics. For example, when discussing Carnegie/Rockefeller/etc. we discuss the concepts of them being Robber Barons and Captains of Industry.
