Nice "backup" and they'll also try to snag a rb on day 3.
Someone in the vein of D. McCluster or Sproles would be a nice add.
They're bringing in Seastrunk for a visit so there could be interest there. Not a tiny guy like those 2 (or as fast) but not a truck like Bell and Blount. No receptions last year but that doesn't necessarily mean he can't catch the ball. He did well catching the ball at the combine.

Legarette Blount visits the Steelers today, my expectation is that he is signed at some point and that Lawrence Timmons gets a contract restructure to make more room.
May not have to. He played last year for less than $700k. I realize his TB contract was much higher but that was an overinflated contract. He might have been given the "take less or we'll release you" option. Doesn't seem like he's highly sought after. I think he takes $800-900K and signs today, pending a physical. If they offer him more than $1M I'd be shocked.
This is both inaccurate and unrealistic.

Blount took a significant pay cut last year to play with NE, in order to get to show what he can do, then he had some huge games at the end of last year, showing that he has NFL value.

The Ravens, Steelers and Pats are all said to by vying for his services.

The Pats were expected to offer him, at best a 2-year, $2M contract.

He will be a backup on all 3 teams, and the Steelers have a young RB who they've shown is "their guy." In Baltimore, they've got a RB who is facing legal issues, has seriously declined the last 2 years, while in NE, they've shown very little patience with Ridley & his fumbling.

The expectation that he will sign for barely more than the minimum salary ($730K for a 5th year player) seems doubtful, especially signing such an insignificant contract within 1 day, when he could likely get, at worst, the same type of contract with a better team (the Pats) where he might have the ability to outright win the job, rather than having to be injury insurance.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see. He's just not going to command more than $1M/yr. He's not a hot commodity and none of the 3 have a lot of cash to throw his way, though the Pats and Ravens do have more available. The Pats certainly aren't going to pay him much. The Ravens are looking for a backup qb so that will eat up some of their cap if they sign one.
2 years, $3.85 million. Like I said, he had 3 teams vying for his services, he has shown that he can produce in the NFL, and the Patriots were rumored in February to be willing to pay $1M/year. Expecting him to sign for 1 year, under $1M wasn't realistic.

As shocked as I am the Steelers signed Blount based on his Boise St Mike Tyson Punch Out past, I guess he's distanced himself enough from that and I think its a real nice signing for them. Perfect counterpart to Bell, and not much tread on the tires at all for a 27 yr old.

While not as small as Sproles or McCluster, Seastrunk has boatloads of speed. Im a bit surprised theyre bringing him in because I didnt think theyd be in the market for a RB on day 2 of the draft - especially after getting Blount - but maybe theyre finally realizing they need more speed on offense.

Did they sign him today like I said? Did they restructure anyone like I said would not happen? I said they would be able to sign him today w/o restructuring anyone for this year at $1M or less. They got him this year for $1M or less. It's a backended contract. They could have signed him to a 20 year contract for all I care but NFL contracts aren't guaranteed and the only thing that mattered right now was getting him for this year within their cap.

Don't think he necessarily goes day 2.

It was a little egregious at the time but he's kept his nose clean since then that I know of.

No, you didn't. Here's your post:

You said "doesn't seem like he's highly sought after."

3 teams were after him.

You said "I think he takes $800-900K and signs today." His signing bonus itself was for more than that.

You also said "If they offer him more than $1M, I'd be shocked."

You didn't say "if they actually pay him more than $1M, I'd be shocked," you said if they offered him more. Well, they offered him much more than that, BECAUSE THEY HAD TO; because he was sought after, and they wouldn't have gotten him if they read the situation like you read the situation.

Basically, you were right about them signing him, but wrong about EVERYTHING else. So, good call.

Well in any case I love the signing, especially with the Ravens being interested .

Aside from losing Cotchery I really like the moves the Steelers have made this offseason.

I agree. I think you can get into the playoffs and have Blount produce and help you win games if he has to start. Not so with Dwyer, Redman, Jones.

I am interested in what we are looking at for a passing down back behind Bell though.

I know that undersized and blazing Dri Archer is only projected as a 5th/6th rounder.

And he returns kicks... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scMAy5rM3Eo

If Mitchell pans out, when did we have an offseason this good in FA? I have little doubts Blount and Moore will both be at worst serviceable, and really the only possible perceived "major" loss came from their decision to lose him with Woodley.

i like the Blount signing and although I know nothing about the new safety they brought in, I've heard OK things. I think the big swing and a miss will shake out to be the Lance Moore signing and WR remains a glaring spot of need. I mention that because I know a little about Lance Moore as a fantasy owner and I know enough that he did not produce well on grass. He padded his numbers on the fake stuff. I don't think he will be a bust, but I also don't think it's a good signing. I'd give the Steelers a "B" so far this offseason.

Biggest question mark of the ones they signed to me would be Cam Thomas.
Maybe Im in the minority, but Im expecting next to nothing from him, pure depth/emergency situation guy. As long as he doesnt provide a gaping vagine for RBs to run thru, he has succeeded.

Former Texans CB Brice McCain signed a one-year deal today:

The Steelers have signed cornerback Brice McCain, the team announced today. Financial terms of the one-year contract were not disclosed.McCain (5-9, 187) was originally selected by the Houston Texans in the sixth round (188th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft. He has spent all five of his NFL seasons with Houston, appearing in 72 regular-season games and making 10 starts. McCain set career highs with four starts and 30 total tackles in 2013. For his career, McCain has registered 111 tackles (94 solo), five interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and 32 passes defensed.

McCain has also appeared in two postseason contests, making one start and registering two passes defensed.

Ryan Clark signs a two-year deal with Washington.
Clark had some great years with the Steelers but was absolutely horrible last season. At 34 (will be 35 in October) I can't believe he has much left in the tank.

I wish him well in Washington but his constant yapping to the media was getting tiresome.
yet some steelers fans wanted James Harrison back!

Still do. And there's a decent chance they sign him in June.

DHB would seem to be camp competition. Is he any good on special teams? Maybe a 5th wr & kickoff returner?

Count me in the minority but I like the DHB signing. He has hands of stone but stikes me as someone who adds depth and competition for Wheaton.

He did have a 65/1000 season on a raiders team that was a hot pile of garbage. Not really promising how he did in Indy last year but there's hope that as a #3/#4 guy he could make some splash plays and stretch defenses.

Yeah I don't really see a down side to it.

DHB just means they don't have to spend a late round pick on a WR. Still think a receiver or athletic TE like Ebron will be in the cards on day 1 or 2. Along with Brown, Wheaton, Moore, and Heyward-Bey, that would give them 5 capable guys, plus Miller over the middle and Bell out of the backfield.

Plus, if none of the contract was guaranteed(likely) Heyward-Bey can be insta-cut if he blows in camp or if they had the opportunity to land multiple young WRs via the draft.

No idea about his use as a returner, but the Colts were using him as a gunner on teams last year and he actually wasn't bad at it. Could totally see them doing worse as the "splash play" 4th or 5th guy on the depth chart that is also used on teams.

Not a DHB fan by any stretch, since he prolly dropped the pen when he signed his contract, but as the 5th guy/gunner? As likely to just be a body to push young guys and be cut in camp if the young guys outperform him as anything, but if it was for vet minimum it's hard to get upset about it.

I wanted DHB last year in lieu of Emmanuel Sanders (plus the 3rd). This is late, but helps. Ben has weapons. The line should be improved simply by coaching and experience. A full season of Bell with a solid backup. This could be a competive season if the D remembers who they are.

Hopefully they find a competent DE and NT in draft or after June 1.

I figured you would quote your sig again or something after the DHB signing.

Dennard or Evans? Those are the two names I'm seeing more and more of as the FA dust settles. who do you scout nerds think is a better pick?
