Colts released RB Jonathan Wells, K Shane Andrus, DB Waine Bacon, QB Josh Betts, DL Sweet Pea Burns, DB Tanard Davis, DE George Gause, LB Nick Hannah, TE Joey Hawkins, P Reggie Hodges, RB Tony Hollings, WR Ed Hinkel, LB Brandon Hoyte, CB Von Hutchins, G Trevor Hutton, DT Tom Johnson, OL Bo Lacy, S Dexter Reid, LB Dale Robinson, C Russ Tanner, G Matt Ulrich, DE Jonathan Welsh and DE Marcus West.Wells and Hollings failed in bid to add depth to the Indianapolis backfield. Burns was a busted third-rounder from last year, Welsh was a fifth-round pick in 2005. Andrus could be placed on the practice squad in case Adam Vinatieri isn't ready for Week 1.

Tell me something , they signed him Thursday and released him Saturday wtf.
Wells is a "vested" veteran, meaning he's played more than four years in the league. This means that if he makes the 53 man roster before the season starts, his contract is guaranteed for the season, even if they cut him during the season. But, by cutting him now, they can sign him after week one or later if they need RB depth. Then if they decide to cut him during the season, they only pay him a pro-rated salary... Who knows if they'll sign him back, but my guess is they wanted to take a brief look at him for a few days to check him out and were planning on cutting him anyway... unless he absolutely blew them out of the water with his amazing skills... which was highly unlikely.

They run a slight risk that someone else may sign him first, but that's a risk I'm sure they're willing to take in order to not guarantee half a million (or whatever) to a third string RB of Wells' caliber.

JUST SPECULATION But If I had to guess, Wells demon of being "out of shape" struck again. If a guy is a street free agent and comes into camp out of shape, he doesnt want it very bad.

It's possible that they're going to re-sign him after the season starts (so his salary isn't guaranteed). They worked him out to see if he's worthwhile to them.

He was signed to get through the last pre-season game and to try out. That's it - he's not coming back.
