Arizona Chupacabra
Tommorow is the big day. I will be at the first Diamondbacks spring training game of the year. I believe Webb, Haren, and Owings will be pitching. Scherzer is also scheduled to throw two innings. I thought Scherzer would spend some time in triple a but it seems the door is open for him to possibly be a starter. I will have a full report with pics tommorow night.

I am giddy as a school girl for tommorow. I took the day off and it should be in the 70s-80s tommorow.  :)

What's the thought on Stephen Drew?

In my draft, all the big names are gone, and rather than take someone mediocre like Cabrera, or Renteria, I was considering waiting until late and going for Drew.

He has been working on hitting and hopefully will do more with the balls he hits. I expect OPS to go up. There was a blurb in the Az paper that he is bigger this year. I would be a little surprised if he is available "late" in a draft.Drews 2007 in perspective http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/shareit/txnM

I am not sure if Drew will be playing today. I guess he had his wisdom teeth removed and may be out.

I am back from the game. Awesome I actually teared up a little. It was in the 80s today and there was lots of womens in tank tops. There was also a baseball game.

Owings did not have very good control, although he was throwing hard. None of the big names had a very good game. All the hits came from guys trying to make the team. Upton fumbled a ball in the outfield :coffee: .

I think I will go back tommorow. I have pics of players but I dont know how to share them. If someone wants to walk me through it I will get the pics up.

What's the over/under on the number of starts that the Big Unit gets in 2008?
25 and I would take the under. I say we get about 150 innings out of him. All reports so far are good but I dont see him staying healthy all season. I believe he should be our 5th starter and if he gets skipped he is skipped until his turn comes around. I dont want to see our rotation messed with. From what I have read the back pain last year came 3 days after pitching so if he gets pain lets give him 8 days off. Of course if the back stays ok it will be the knees.I stand by what I said in other threads. If we get any thing out of RJ this year it will be icing on the cake but I wont hold my breath.

Music man

Randy Johnson's back problems kept him from taking several flights with the Diamondbacks in 2007 but didn't stop him from attending an Eric Clapton- Steve Winwood concert Tuesday in New York.

Johnson flew there on a private jet after his workout and then returned in time for the Wednesday workout, at which he played long toss and did his normal conditioning work.

"It hasn't affected anything here," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "I wish he would have let me know, I would have gone with him."

Looks like I was right :Johnson and the team are in agreement that his starts and innings may have to be limited this season to get the maximum out of the pitcher without overtaxing him and risk losing him early to a setback.

That means instead of making 32 or so starts, Johnson could conceivably make anywhere from 22 to 25 starts.

I like Nippert. It is to bad we are out of options. I would keep an eye on him in deeper leagues. Obviously I was wrong but I thought he would go up before Micah Owings last year. He just needs to get some consistency.

PHOENIX -- Brandon Medders and Yusmeiro Petit won the final two spots in the D-backs bullpen on Friday.

The pair were in competition with Dustin Nippert and Jailen Peguero for the spots. The D-backs traded Nippert to the Rangers earlier Friday and Peguero was optioned to Triple-A Tucson following Friday's exhibition game against the Rockies.

The decision was a tough one for manager Bob Melvin, given how well Peguero had pitched. The right-hander finished the spring with a 2.45 ERA.

"Peguero's been throwing the ball extremely well," Melvin said. "I'd be shocked if Jailen Peguero wasn't a part of this team at some point this year."

The bullpen will include Brandon Lyon, Tony Pena, Chad Qualls, Juan Cruz, Doug Slaten, Petit and Medders.

With Arizona and Colorado facing off in one of the best three-game series of this weekend, let's take a look at the strengths and weaknesses of the two clubs, with one eye on their matchup and the other on how they line up in the race for the NL West title.

Arizona's strengths

The Diamondbacks' major move this offseason was to add innings sponge Dan Haren to their rotation, slotting him in as the No. 2 starter behind Brandon Webb. Haren, who started last year's All-Star Game for the American League, gains by moving to the easier league but leaves the friendly confines of Oakland's home park, with copious foul ground and deep fences. He follows Webb, one of the best starters in the game, an extreme ground-baller with above-average control.

Diamondbacks vs. Rockies

Weekend probables Day Time (ET) Matchup

Friday 4:05 Micah Owings vs.

Mark Redman

Saturday 8:05 Brandon Webb vs.

Jeff Francis

Sunday 3:05 Edgar Gonzalez vs.

Franklin Morales

The Rockies will face Webb on Saturday, bookended by Micah Owings, who also has plus control and swings a potent stick for a pitcher, and Edgar Gonzalez, another strike-thrower who has been extremely homer-prone and pitches in the wrong ballpark for that style.

When they get a late lead, the D-backs have a quartet of outstanding relievers to throw at opponents. Newly acquired Chad Qualls pounds the strike zone and gets ground balls, so while his style is different from Jose Valverde's (for whom he was traded), his results should be just as good. He joins closer Brandon Lyon (fresh off a blown save on Wednesday), Tony Pena, and Juan Cruz, three hard throwers who were all top performers last year. And credit manager Bob Melvin for his skillful deployment of his relievers in 2007. Three Arizona relievers ranked in the top 14 in baseball in Relievers' Expected Wins Added, a Baseball Prospectus statistic that measures performance as well as leverage, or how the relievers were used. Melvin got his best relievers into games where they could do the most to increase Arizona's chances of winning, and he did so better than any other manager in baseball.

Arizona also has a chance to be one of the better defensive clubs in the league when their top lineup is on the field. Orlando Hudson is among the best second basemen in baseball, with good range on ground balls and a great knack for catching pop flies. An Eric Byrnes-Chris Young-Justin Upton outfield includes three guys who could play center field every day. And Stephen Drew is athletic enough to become an above-average shortstop, although he's not there yet.

Arizona's Achilles' heel

2007 National League ranks

Batting average 16th (.250)

On-base percentage 16th (.321)

Runs 14th (714)

Arizona's weaknesses

The Diamondbacks scored fewer runs in 2007 than any NL team other than San Francisco and Washington, both bad teams playing in pitcher's parks. The fuel for Arizona's offensive ineptitude was its inability to put men on base, as they finished dead last in the league with a .321 OBP. That's likely to improve somewhat as their young hitters gain experience and see their batting averages rise, but they're still dependent on a number of hitters who've shown no propensity to work the count or take a walk, including the hacker Mark Reynolds, Byrnes and Young.

Young posted great walk rates in the minors, but he has to get his bat started early and doesn't have much of a chance to adjust to off-speed pitches at the big-league level. So despite its strength in several areas of run prevention and the 90 games they'll play in hitter's parks, Arizona will be hard-pressed to score much more than 800 runs this year. Their impatience certainly favors Colorado's Saturday starter, Jeff Francis. The 27-year-old left-hander has a fringy fastball but plus command and can take advantage of hitters with poor plate discipline.

Colorado's strengths

The Rockies had arguably the best defense in the National League in 2007, and if anything they've improved their defense up the middle this year with the substitution of Jayson Nix for Kaz Matsui. Troy Tulowitzki nearly won the Rookie of the Year award on the strength of his defensive reputation; he has great range in both directions, good hands, and a plus arm. Nix won't hit, but he's above-average at second base, and the Rockies should turn plenty of double plays with that keystone combination.

They're strong in center with Willy Taveras and Ryan Spilborghs, and are only weak in their outfield corners, especially with converted first baseman Brad Hawpe playing right.

The front end of the Rockies' bullpen was one of the best in baseball last year, and they return the top two arms in Manny Corpas and Brian Fuentes. Corpas, probably forever doomed to a ceiling of the second-best reliever to come out of Panama, has a filthy two-seamer that hitters pound into the ground, while Fuentes comes at hitters from a sidearm angle but gets his fastball in to right-handed hitters and doesn't have the severe platoon split that most sidearmers have.

Colorado's weaknesses

The Rockies' run to the playoffs last year was fueled by several factors that no longer apply. Their rotation returns Francis as the ace, but he's followed by question marks. Ubaldo Jimenez has a live arm but walked more than 100 batters during the regular season last year between the minors and majors, and he wasn't any better in spring training, walking 10 men and hitting five in just under 20 innings.

They've replaced Josh Fogg with Kip Wells and brought back late-season addition Mark Redman, neither of whom has even been league-average since 2003. And hard-throwing starter Franklin Morales, one of the surprise aces of the Rockies' playoff run last year, showed reduced velocity and poor control all through spring training and was pushed to the fifth spot in the rotation. Arizona will face Redman, Francis, and Morales; if Morales returns to his 2007 form, the Sunday matchup against Gonzalez heavily favors the Rockies.

Their bullpen lost a major cog when LaTroy Hawkins chose to sign with the Yankees, trading places with Luis Vizcaino, who was coming off a year that started and ended poorly. Vizcaino missed time in March with a stiff elbow and his command has been terrible, culminating in a four-run pounding Wednesday night against St. Louis. The downgrade from Hawkins to Vizcaino leaves the Rockies without a good right-handed setup option to complement Fuentes and help get the ball to Corpas.

Their offense is almost completely intact from last year, but one weakness in the lineup was exposed in the World Series, when it became clear that most of the Rockies' hitters struggle against good fastballs. The Red Sox exploited this weakness in shutting the Rockies down in four games, and you can bet that most NL opponents caught on to this. In this series, the Rockies won't face a lot of heat from the Arizona starters, but if the Diamondbacks take a lead into the late innings, they have several relievers who can light up the gun, including Lyon, Pena, and Cruz.

Young, D-Backs close to deal

Squad trying to sign outfielder to 6-year deal

The Arizona Republic

DENVER - The Diamondbacks and center fielder Chris Young appear to be closing in on a long-term contract, and an announcement on the deal could come sometime early this week.

Details of the agreement are not known but it is believed to be close to, but short of, the six-year, $30 million deal the Colorado Rockies gave shortstop Troy Tulowitzki earlier this year.

Tulowitzki's was a record for a player with less than two years of service time.

If the deal is for six years, that would put Young under contract through 2013 - perhaps longer if the deal includes a team option like Tulowitzki's. A six-year deal would cover all of Young's arbitration years (2010-12) and his first free-agency year.

Young, who has about one year and two months of major-league service time, hit .237 with 32 homers and 27 stolen bases as a rookie last season. He is 5 for 23 (.217) with three home runs and seven walks in six games this season.

Locking players up early in their careers to long-term deals has been a growing trend in baseball. Teams get cost certainty while players get the security of a hefty, guaranteed payday.

Pretty much the best night I have ever had in a ball park last night.

1) It was a sellout and the crowd was really into it.

2) Dbacks slapped the dodgers silly

3) unveiling of the NLW champion banner.

4) Dbacks slapped the dodgers silly

50 unveling of the huge high def jumbotron. It was really cool. They had Byrnes on the old one and he says "You call this big?" and he hits the old jumbotron with his bat and the new huge one lights up. It was ver very cool. I have never seen a screen so big. It is just huge and so clear.

5) Dbacks slapped the dodgers silly

6) I took the shuttle from Tucson so I could drink on the way and during the whole game with no concerns about driving. I will definatelly be using this shuttle service more.

I cant say enough good things about the ballpark last night. It was a great experience and was affordable for a family. IMO this is where MLB gets it and the NFL does not. I could never afford to do what I did last night with a family of six at an NFL game.

Anyway hats off to the Dbacks entire organization for last night.

Hey pro, what do you think about Drew this year? I drafted my SS late and was happy to get a young SS with potential in Drew. Then I overreacted and thought hed be a bust and traded for Peralta, meanwhile Ive had Drew on the bench for his 2 HRs and his SB. Seems like I should stick with Drew.

Who is in line to get the saves for the D-Backs? Is Lyon going to keep his job or will it get passed to Pena or Qualls?? I suppose it could end up being a committee position for that matter.

Its still Lyon but if he keeps faltering I have a gut feeling Qualls is closer.

I have absolutely no inside nor homer information on this, but I agree with you about Qualls. However, most of the sites that I read about the situation, seems to hand the closer role to Pena.

Probably commitee unless Lyon gets his #### together.

I am a big fan. I wish Melvin would change the line up some and this would help Drew. He certainly looks bigger this year and has a nicer swing.

This was posted by Doug Davis' father today at a Dbacks site.

"Don't mean to break in on the thread but I just got off the phone with Doug, He will be at the game. He's going in late so he'll miss the reporters. He will be dressed and in the dugout during the game. Felling fine and alittle warn down but good.

Back to the game. Go D-Backs"

Sure enough there he was showing off his scar in the dugout. :goodposting: DD is a good guy and I am glad to hear he is doing well.

Looks like D-backs 2006 1st rounder Max Scherzer is off to a fine start at Tucson-AAA.

2 starts

0.00 ERA

18/2 K-BB

So the question is how soon will we see him with the D-backs? Any chance he replaces Edgar Gonzalez before Davis returns?

Is anyone watching Randy Johnson pitch now? He seems like he's having some serious control issues. I'm just keeping track of the game on CBS GameCenter and it seems pretty crazy how scattered the pitches are.

I am listening to it on radio and I just got in. You might be able to get the game for free if you go to diamondbacks.com and sign up. They were showing it for free because the game is not being shown due to the suns game. The game will be shown on your computer through MLB.

Stranger things have happened but I dont think you will see him in Phoenix this year barring injuries.

Another ugly outing by Lyon. 2 hits and a walk to load the bases in the 9th in a non-save situation. Qualls pitched a perfect 8th inning with 2 strikeouts whereas Pena gave up 2 hits and an earned run in the 7th.

I'm considering stashing Qualls because as of now he looks like the best pitcher in that bullpen. He has been practically unhittable so far this year. Anybody else think that Lyon's leash is getting short?

Does anything think that Qualls has surpassed Pena as the most likely replacement for Lyon?

Yes to all of that.

Diamondbacks promote top prospect Scherzer

Update, 1:30 p.m.: We spoke with GM Josh Byrnes this morning and he basically said the move was made because of a need in the bullpen.

Byrnes was asked how much they balanced Scherzer’s development in the decision to bring him up.

“I think we’re still aware of it,” Byrnes said. “Yes, he can develop some in the big leagues. There are a lot of issues, but right now the most compelling issue is we need him in the big leagues. We just have a tired bullpen. There’s a little more short-term urgency than there has been.”

As for the bullpen/starter thing, Byrnes said the club wants him to be a starter long-term, it’s just that right now they need help in the bullpen. And what’s going to happen with his role the rest of this season?

“We’ll see,” Byrnes said. “I think that’s going to be the fluidity of this season. Sort of assessing what our big league team needs and how he can contribute. And then also aware of the longer view of him and the team.”

To me, that means: If he isn’t getting innings here, he might have to go back down to get them. However, with Doug Davis’ situation uncertain and with your best alignment possibly being Gonzalez in the bullpen and Scherzer in the rotation, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him start some games here soon.

By the way, Petit, who didn't pitch poorly while he was here, will go into the rotation in Tucson. He'll start Thursday, Byrnes said.

***

What is it with the Diamondbacks bringing up top prospects in San Diego? First Chris Young, then Justin Upton, and today, Max Scherzer.

Yup, the Diamondbacks’ called up their top pitching prospect today and have him on the lineup card as being in the bullpen.

Yusmeiro Petit was apparently the one optioned to Triple-A Tucson. He wasn’t on the lineup card.

Scherzer, who was scheduled to start Sunday in Tucson, posted ridiculous numbers in the Pacific Coast League. He had a 1.17 ERA in four starts, striking out 38 and walking three in 23 innings.

Not sure I understand this move entirely if they’re going to leave him in their bullpen long-term, especially after he was starting to show that he just might be a good starter in the long run.

It appears the move was done in reaction to Micah Owings’ injury. Perhaps Scherzer is insurance in case Owings can’t start Friday? But if that was the case, why not let him start Sunday in Tucson? Did they not want to risk injury down there?

Maybe they need some coverage in the bullpen after 13 innings yesterday? I doubt that, since Juan Cruz, Brandon Lyon and Tony Pena all had yesterday off.

Maybe they’re going to move him into the rotation and bump Edgar Gonzalez back to that swing role in the bullpen? That, to me, would seem like the most likely move.

Regardless of the reason, this seems to make their pitching staff better; they really needed to find a way to get him into the majors considering the numbers he was putting up.

But I think it’s important that he continues to develop as a starter. They might need him in the rotation next year or maybe even later this year. Having him throw inconsistent innings out of the pen isn’t going to allow him to further develop his change-up and slider. It’s not going to get his innings total up to the point where he could throw 180 innings if he’s in the rotation next year.

We’ll let you know what they say when the move is officially announced in about an hour.
