Great offensive vs defensive matchup this week. The JETS look to be an aggressive, attacking defense, similar to the Ravens under Rex Ryan. The Texans will counter with a very well balanced and equally aggressive offense.

Who are the good/bad plays on each side of the ball?

AJ vs Revis.

Daniels vs NYJ DEF

Walter/ A. Davis vs Shephard

Schaub vs JETS Pass DEF

Slaton vs JETS Run DEF

NYJ DEF vs Hou Off

I think a lot of the success or lack thereof will be determined by the health of Schaub.
 
The Johnson/Revis showdown may be the most exciting match up of week one. In general, though, Houston should be able to pass on New York, but not run on them.

Schaub was said to be practicing all week. I think he will be fine.According to NFL.com, Gary Kubiak was happy with Matt Schaub's performance at practice Friday. "He did good," Kubiak said. "He was a lot better today than he was yesterday. We got a chance to still be outside so to me that helps. We didn't want to work on the turf in there. So all indications are he's heading towards being fine."Edit: weird that it says friday...I'm sure it's a typo.

I think Schaub will shred the NYJ secondary.... AJ will be moved around, so I think the matchup w/ Revis is over-hyped.

 
With both Pace and Ellis suspended, Slaton could have a nice outing. They will likely run at Gholston subbing for Pace. I'm sure they will try to get AJ matched up on Sheppard as much as possible. I don't think Houston will "shread" the Jets DB's, but Sheppard... yea, most likely.

I think the Jets will send the kitchen sink on blitzes, maybe another good thing for Slaton. Not so good for Schaub, but the big play has a better chance with an attack D like that. I can see Rhodes doubling on AJ when he's against Sheppard. Revis won't get as much help.

 
I think Daniels will do very well in this game, as the focus will be on AJ and Slaton...and with the JETS bringing pressure Daniels should be open a lot.

I'm still not sure on Schaub though. Even if healthy, with the pressure I don't know how he does...although some screens to Slaton and a lot of passes to Daniels will be effective.

I think the JETS DEF will get to Schaub 3 times and maybe get 1 int. So they are a decent play...but the Texans at home might put up 20+ points.

 
First it's Hasselbech now it's Shephard?! It's Sheppard! Just busting you, but he is their weak link - I haven't been impressed at all with him. If he continues to hold and get PI calls, they will sit him. The more he plays the greater the chance the Jets have to give up a 2nd round pick later on.

I think AJ on Revis is a great matchup - though I love Revis - he was beaten deep a couple times this preseason (did have a small injury I think earlier in camp). I think Sheppard will be exposed, and the linebackers should do just alright on Daniels.

Not having Pace and Ellis hurts, so I don't think the Jets D is going to be great come Sunday.

 
The Texans are a finesse team, and if the Jets were at full strength I would pick them to win. At home they could pound a team like this into the dirt.

But with neither of those factors in place I would start all my healthy Texans (just Daniels for me).

I agree that the Texans will be able to pass but with the suspensions on the defensive line for the Jets I'm not so sure the running game is shut down?I will say, I believe Houston wins at home in this one.
 
I think Houston will expose teh Jets D for the fraud that they are. Ryan's "trash-talking" is nice and all, but it doesn't do squat to put pressure on opposing QBs.

Me too. What Fraud? They haven't played a down yet with their new defensive system with new personnel and they are a fraud already? Interesting. Are you also cutting FWP, Mendenhall, Chris Johnson and Pierre Thomas?

Call it a hunch... but a low scoring game just might happen here. Schaub is all banged up. K Walter is a ?, the Texans don't have any regular season game tapes to prepare for the new Jets D. Jets' D is short Ellis and Pace. Sanchez could surprise. How good of a bltzing D does Houston have? Could Leon Washington burn them?

Who will start for the Texans at CB? Can Clowney get past them for a long TD? After the Jets set it all up with a run, run, run game plan?

Not calling for a Jets win here, but if I were a betting man, I would stay far, far away.

 
I think a very possible storyline will be about whether Houston's offense can go up on the Jets early and force them to pass. If so, you'll have a pressure defense that no one has tape on yet going up against a rookie QB, and I think that would probably strongly favor the Texans.

However, if the Texans don't open up a lead early, I think the Jets may expose Houston's weakness at defensive tackle and be able to move the ball on the ground... letting Sanchez just manage the game rather than have to try to be the one to win it with his arm. So I think how the Jets D does against Houston's O early on is likely to be a big key to the game.

:goodposting: well done...

ellis and pace being out will hurt. gholston makes me nervous. however, it helps that schaub is gimpy and walter looks to be out. we'll see. aj vs revis will be fun to watch and so will daniels vs scott/harris.

 
the sports radio talk today was about how people were over-worried (based on previous years) Schaub's current status. it was said that he was going at full speed with no problem, and anxious to get back in there. not saying that he is impervious to re-injurying it, but unless that happens i expect the ankle to be fine.

i expect big days from AJ, Owens, Schaub.

i would not start Walter this week though. A.Davis might be worth a WR 3 shot this week though if you are somehow already lacking there.

The Texans will play Dunta Robinson and Fred Bennett at corner. Keep in mind theres also no tape of what the new Texan defense will look like with a new coordinator and 2 new position coaches. Matt Schaub is not all banged up. The defense is a giant question mark, so I think that will be the deciding factor in the game.
 
I don't see any reason why the Jets will slow down Houston's offense. Especially with Ellis and Pace out. That said I think it will be a close game, but ultimately a Texans win.

yea im not sure about fraud, but have they proven anything yet? they are pretty hyped up this preseason.
 
I am interested to see how this game pans out. Pace and Ellis being out I think is pretty big. Yeah, Ryan is D technician, but Im not sure the puzzle pieces he has in NYJ are as good as those in Baltimore, especially with those 2 out.

Regardless though, Im pretty sure anyone who has Schaub, Andre3000, Slaton, or Daniels is starting them and expecting decent numbers.

Im starting Schaub and Slaton so I sure hope it ends up good!

yea im not sure about fraud, but have they proven anything yet? they are pretty hyped up this preseason.

how about overhyped instead of fraud? all i've heard about from teh media is how magic man rex ryan is going to turn a mediocre group of players into the 86 Bears. i like revis, but he's the closest thing they have to a playmaker on that D. love the idp jet guys in fantasy, as i see them being on the field all the time...but in the "real NFL", they stink. i see Houston putting up 30 easy Sunday.

When they are playing as a unit, there are several other "play makers" on that defense. Revis, Pace, Scott, Rhodes, and Jenkins are among the best in the league at their positions. Throw in Harris as a budding star, too, and you get the idea. They definitely have holes, Sheppard was not good in preseason, and Pace's absence hurts because Gholston hasn't shown much promise. To say they are over hyped based on what they have done (nothing), I will agree, but there is potential for them to be a much better unit than laissez-faire Mangini's squad. Do you follow the team closely? Not being a jerk, but to say they "stink" is a bit harsh in my opinion.

I dont think they stink by any stretch of the imagination and I think its going to be a very good game tomorrow.

Well, I would'nt say Scaub is exactly healthy, either. With Walter's status, AJ might get double teamed all day. I like Owen's and Slaton's chances at having good FF games. Harris will likely be on Owens, and I think this is the key matchup. I think the Jets will blitz a lot, and if Shcaub and Owens make the hot reads correctly...
 
lots of good story lines in this game:

Schaub, healthy?

Rex Ryan's Jets

Sanchez's 1st NFL start

Slaton as a sophmore

i'm lookin forward to this one.

Wow, you really like that coachspeak kool-aid, dont you? Just bc Kubes says Brown will play on short yardage, RZ, and GL plays, doesnt mean every single time. They arent pulling Slaton just because theyre at the 7 yard line.I wouldnt be surprised at all if Slaton gets a <5yd TD tomorrow. I actually hope he does, so all these people thinking CBrown is the next Leroy Hoard will quit talking about him

Cushing & Sanchez were roommates in college too. Both 1st round picks, good friends, facing each other in their first real NFL game. Should make for a great story.
 
did I miss the memo that said the Jets have a good defense now? and a D that Iwould consider benching players against? Let a lone a top flight O like Houston? :thumbup:

I was actually leaning toward benching Slaton for Ronnie Brown vs ATL until I read this.

Ummm... what? Schaub has an ankle injury. Don't know how you might have missed that one.... and I surely don't think that Davis=Walter. I think the Jets lose a close one... like 27-24 or so. I think this is a game that will come down to turnovers. jamil.... when the Texans get a good DT... you might be right, but not yet.

I didnt miss anything. I wondered where you are getting your he isnt healthy info from because I follow every practice report, interviews with Schaub, interviews with Gary Kubiak, and the Texans beat writer, and all of them have said hes fine, had full practices with no issues whatsoever, and is ready to go. The ankle injury was never serious. Kubiak even said during the preseason that if it had been a regular season game, he never would have gone out. They were doing the smart thing and playing it safe so he would be fully ready to go today.As far as Davis and Walter, ask any Houston homer and all of them will tell you the Texans dont miss a beat with Davis in there for Walter. He's stepped up when we needed him in the past, and he had a monster training camp.

I was wrong. Great game by teh Jet D. We'll see what happens the rest of the season. :shock:
 
Man I wish I saw this game. What is the deal with the Texans? Should I be blaming the over-rated Schaub or crediting the Jets D?

more like the texans aweful offensive line, and their o-coordinator.they need to get AJ involved early and often in games.
