Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said Thursday that Rashard Mendenhall will remain the goal-line back after all.

The report comes from ESPN 1250 Pittsburgh's Ken Laird, a reliable voice on Steelers matters in the past. Though coach Mike Tomlin indicated that Isaac Redman would receive an opportunity to nail down the short-yardage job, the Steelers may just be planning to use him on third- or fourth-and-short to save Mendehall's legs over the course of the game. Once again, this is not news.

Redman was brought in in large part because Mendenhall was terrible at converting 3rd or 4th and 1-or-less type situations last year. The guy has a lot of skills, but moving a pile simply isn't one of them.

Goal to go inside the two and you're going to see a lot of (but by no means exclusively) Redman. Inside the red zone more generally? Depends on the package they run, but for most packages, Mendenhall's their guy.

There's always the balance there, hack, over what people want. Some complain we don't send enough as they want every little thing. Others complain that we send too much and they don't care if Mendenhall gets the goal line touches or not.Sure, when Peyton Manning hurts his knee, that's clearly breaking news and an easy one. But Tomlin saying something about Mendenhall losing goal line touches may not be for some people. So it's almost always a judgment call on my part. I try to balance giving the subscribers what they want and not overloading their email box. J

I'm not sure this is big news, though I want these types of e-mails. My point is, I think we would all be a little naive to believe anything the Steelers' coaches have to say. Aren't these the same guys that sold us on Willie Parker getting 30 carries/game about this time last year? I don't think you can trust anything they say.

He was quoting the offensive coordinator.
 
Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians explained that he wants Rashard Mendenhall in the game at the goal line because of his receiving ability.The Steelers want defenses to respect the threat of a pass inside the five-yard line. Isaac Redman is still considered the team's designated short-yardage back on third and fourth downs, but Mendenhall will receive the bulk of the goal-line carries. Quick note for any of you guys already working the waiver wire. Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin made some news today talking about RB Isaac Redman saying he'd earned the opportunity to see time as the short yardage back. Tomlin said he's "going to get a chance to be featured there".

Note that Tomlin says Redman has the opportunity. It'll be up to Redman to deliver. And to see if he can turn success there into vulturing goal line TDs. But wanted to give you the headsup in case you were looking for an edge.

I would have never put in the title the words "Goaline vulture". I know your intentions were good, but nowadays the media too many times takes a qoute from a coach or player and spins it and speculates what they interpret what the coach/player said instead of just stating the exact quote. I believe Redman will get a few tds, but only because Mendenhall neeeds a rest not because he became a goaline vulture.
