Maybe there's a bit of nostalgia for people who keep mentioning how good this movie but I watched The Long Kiss Goodnight and thought it was horrible. I can overlook a movie being a little dated if it holds up in other areas but Geena Davis is horribly unbelievable in her role. SLJ is decent but definitely not his best performance. Do people like it because it's so bad it's good? I couldn't even come to that conclusion. I gave up shortly after she turned into the bad-### blond, fast-forwarded to the explosions at the end and that was it. Not good. 1.5/5
It's a dumb movie made by a dumb director for his actress wife. it kind of embodies many of the worst tropes of 90's action filmmaking. think a poor man's michael bay and you have renny harlin.
I thought it was mainly a comedy, not serious action movie. Been a long time since I've seen it so I'll watch it again.
i think it is a fun movie because it is so dumb. SamJax steals the show in pretty much every scene he's in.
Saw it again last night - cheesier than I remembered but there's no doubt that it was meant to be mostly comedy. The action was hilarious - a grenade blowing up an entire hallway so they have to jump out a window and shoot an UZI on the way down to blow up the ice, shooting tires out while ice skating across a lake, etc, etc. Watching the tables being turned on "Bad Mother####er" Sam Jackson is priceless.

Do the Right Thing:

I didn't enjoy my experience with this one at all. For sure an important film as far as the topic of race relations is concerned, especially for the time it was released, but Spike Lee's style and one dimensional characters made it really hard for me to take this movie too seriously. From the opening credits (I won't lie, is was expecting Fire Marshall Bill or the Head Detective to come out after the credits), it felt more like a series of skits or a play than a coherent movie. It honestly took a bit of willpower to not hit the FF button or eject this one. Maybe I missed something, but I am not understanding the near universal praise this movie seems to get.
i think context is key here. it's a flawed film, for sure, as many of the characters are thinly written. more achetypes than real people. it is also episodic, as you mentioned, rather the flowing narrative. that said, it's a potent film that is full of life and full of audacious choices. it may feel dated (i haven't seen it in some years) but it's no less topical now than it was 25 years ago.

i like Lee more than most here probably. he's made some just terrific movies (X, Clockers, and Mo Better Blues are among my favorites) and he's made a slew of just terrible and indulgent films. i don't think i have seen any of his new films that he's done in maybe 10 years, honestly.
We have the same take on Lee.

I saw most of Do the Right Thing recently and felt it held up well... but as SF says, within the context of a Lee film (and some of the racial tensions particular to that time). I love Lee's use of color and framing, and when my mood is right can get behind the flat-stereotypes he floats out there as characters. In those moments, the characters are less about characters and more devices to tell/preach a story. But at it's worst- and it's a very fine line for me- the preachy paper-thin stereotypes get waaaaay too soap-boxey and dull that no amount of nice color or framing can fix.
i think it's interesting to see how he progressed as a director. i like that he's doing more conventional projects like "old boy" and "inside man" because he's benefited from the constraints of the genre. "clockers" is a really good example of how he could adapt and play to his strengths. some of his worst films are bad because they are so personal and ultimately indulgent.
I agree with the above comments. One thing that didn't help DTRT was that it was so overhyped when it came out. It was proclaimed the best movie of the year and an all time great at that time by many.

I liked it for the most part. I would probably give it a solid 7/10, but that is mostly based on the performances. Other than that it was a standard revenge flick that has been done to death, and I didn't really understand a couple of the character's motivations.
I didn't get why Woody did what he did. He could have made a lot of money

with Affleck.

Yeah, I've seen it a couple times before, but last night I watched it with the wife. She doesn't care much about movies, so it's a good sign that at the end of the movie she asked what the title was and said it was good. Usually all I get was "it was Ok" out of her, so that was as close to a rave review I might get out of her.
:lmao:

My wife isn't easily impressed by most movies either. The best I can usually get is "that wasn't terrible"

Yeah, not much to see there. It didn't start out very well, and it never was all that interesting. That opening scene with Woody in the drive-in was so disgusting, it reminded me that extreme violence and misogyny in films is really dull and cliche at this point.

I don't know what to say. I loved this movie.

i think context is key here. it's a flawed film, for sure, as many of the characters are thinly written. more achetypes than real people. it is also episodic, as you mentioned, rather the flowing narrative. that said, it's a potent film that is full of life and full of audacious choices. it may feel dated (i haven't seen it in some years) but it's no less topical now than it was 25 years ago.

i like Lee more than most here probably. he's made some just terrific movies (X, Clockers, and Mo Better Blues are among my favorites) and he's made a slew of just terrible and indulgent films. i don't think i have seen any of his new films that he's done in maybe 10 years, honestly.
Spike is a director that's hard to figure out. Much as I loved Do The Right Thing, I hated Bamboozled in equal measure. His Oldboy remake was decent. Of the recent Spike films, I highly recommend Inside Man. That movie was a lot of fun.

I only saw Mo' Better Blues one time. But I remember that movie had a really offensive Jewish character in it. It was so obvious and anti-Semitic, I couldn't help but wonder if Lee realized how bigoted it looked on screen.

i think it's interesting to see how he progressed as a director. i like that he's doing more conventional projects like "old boy" and "inside man" because he's benefited from the constraints of the genre.
These are two good posts that portray what I was feeling as well. Thought the movie was interesting, but way too one dimensional and preachy. Keep seeing in on "best of decade" lists, and one of the podcasts I was listening to recently kept gushing over it as well, so I had that in my head also. IMO a great movie needs to: 1. present ideas, but ultimately make the audience think for themselves. 2. stand on it's own and not need to be thought of in context or year it was from to understand it's greatness. Do the Right Thing missed on both of those for me.

Night Moves:

J.Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning, and Peter Skarsgaard (sp?) are three ecoterrorists that decide to do blow something up in protest. The movie is about the set up of the deed and the paranoia of the aftermath as things go wrong. It got a little better in the 2nd half, but thought the first leg of the movie was a real chore to get through. Has similar ideas of movies like The East (ecoterrorists) and Blue Ruin (the fallout after something happens) but not nearly as good as those two. Just too slow. 5/10

They Came Together:

Yuck. Thought a movie with Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd would be worth a watch. Couldn't tell you if it got better, as I bailed after about 25 mins. It was them narrating how they got together to another couple over dinner. Basically The Shop Around the Corner being told to you in a way that makes you think they think they are being clever about it, but it's the same tired rom-com but without the com.

The One I Love - 8/10

I didn't read anything anything about this before watching so when it started I thought it would be a typical romance/drama. It isn't and I won't say anything more than 'watch it'. Stars Mark Duplass and Elizabeth Moss (Peggy on Mad Men).

I saw this listed on On Demand for $7.99, is that where you viewed it?

Nope, torrent. Worth $8 though.

The Double

Pretty hilarious dark comedy flick set in a dystopian future that's clearly influenced by the film Brazil. It stars Jesse Eisenberg and directed by the Brit Richard Ayoade, from the TV show IT Crowd and who directed Submarine if you're familiar with either of those. Probably not for everyone, but for those who enjoy dark or british kind of comedies I highly recommend it.

I liked this one quite a bit. Could be because i saw it on a theater undetracted. I thought the tone, set through the cinematography and art direction was perfect for the message/movie. SlickNess and a more rapid fire narrative would have been an inappropriate voice for what i think they were trying to say. Definitely flawed, gloomy and plodding, but I thought it all came together and worked, fairly well. It was a tough task making the protagonist so flawed and still getting me behind him (for a while, anyway)3.35/5 stars

Not sure how popular they are where posters like dogg are from, but I really wish I lived someplace cool that showed older movies on the big screen. Can't imagine that it costs too much for them to get a copy of an older movie to show. I guess it is a question of profit - 50 people wanting to see Reservior Dogs on the big screen vs. taking a screening away from a new fighting robot movie that 100s want to see.

Curious if others in this thread have a theater in the area that does this.

Gave this a try. Don't try watching this drunk. I was sober and had trouble keeping up.

It was beyond ridiculous really. Lots of plot holes.

I'm sure LA does.

NYC has a few- Film Forum shows a mix of new smaller features (like Docs) and old. Anthology Film Archives (in my hood) shows all old and off the beaten path. The Thalia (now Symphony Space) was up in my long ago old hood- had a great lineup, but is now IIRC, only live shows.

My city isn't huge (like 180,000). The local multiplex plays cult double features every Thursday.

I bet someone in your town with some energy could easily throw something like this together. Propose it on a weeknight - which is a slow night for movie theaters. I guarantee this cult show gets more viewers than a normal showing of a new film on a weeknight.

oh yeah- lots of theaters here in NYC do this too, almost exclusively the indie-houses (of which, thankfully, there are still a lot).

Amazing Spider-Man 2

Meh.
I was entertained.
Not terrible, just not special in any way.
Or Amazing
Saw it last night.

Expected more from the villains but they were almost irrelevant to the story.

Transcendence was disappointing.

Divergent was just as expected which was ok.

Muppets most wanted was funnier than I expected. Got it just for my kids but I enjoyed it almost as much as they did.

My wife wants to see The Other Woman as a date night. I'm not interested.

Saw Calvary this weekend. One of the most thought provoking movies I've seen in a very, very long time. For those who can stand non-action, I highly recommend (and would be interested in reading your thoughts on it). It starts a bit slow, but stick with it. Brendan Gleeson is :moneybag: , possibly one of the best actors of his generation, who unfortunately is probably best known as Mel Gibson's big cousin from Braveheart.

Sounds like something I should check out... and that my wife will NEVER check out.

eta: I think of gleeson as the guy from In Bruges at this point.

Professor Alastor Moody for me, although his work in In Bruges was outstanding.

Look for non-profit arthouse type theaters. I live close to Nashville, and have this one. They play all kinds of old stuff, anime, and cult classic movies. They have midnight showings of all kinds of crazy things. They have a full bar inside with a fantastic selection. Big fan. If I was balling, I would be one of their benefactors.

yeah, the Belcourt has been one of those places for decades now. I lived within walking distance of it and went there regularly as a kid in high school. the other place that showed art-house, indie flicks back in the day was the Vanderbilt student union theater. I caught Nosferatu, Stop Making Sense and a slew of other films for a long time.

Watched The Congess and Life Of Crime

I have no idea what The Congress is/was/wanted to be but I didn't even finish it. Life Of Crime is not worth paying for either but slightly entertaining 5/10.

Bummer, I was really excited for The Congress. Trailer looks awesome.

Snowpiercer - 7.5/10 - You have to decide to just go with it to enjoy it because the story and some of the characters are pretty insane. Very violent and dark with just enough camp (that I think was intentional) to avoid going too far off the rails (train pun!). Worth a viewing.

also, not exactly a movie, but i have watched the first episode of Comedy Central show "Review" and love it. It's all too perfect.

Forgot that down on campus at the UW-Madison there is a small place that shows cool stuff.

Cinematheque

Free to the public. They have done wonders to the place. When first started I went and it was basically a lecture hall with uncomfortable seats. Looks like they have a lot more showings of stuff and have redone the place. When I went a couple years ago, it was just on Friday nights and hard for me to get to. Some interesting showings this year with Hitchcock and Cronenberg.

Marking calendar, and not going to complain about not being able to see screeings of older stuff. Will have to make an effort to make it there once or twice this year.

Let The Fire Burn:

Interesting doc about the escalating confrontations between a group called MOVE and the city of Philly in the late 70s through the 80s. Resulted in people killed and essentially a city block being burnt down. Told entirely through stock footage of the hearings about what happened, reporters on site, etc.. Very good since I knew 0 about this incident. However, would have liked a little more about the group and it was slow and a bit of a chore for me to get through last night while tired.

Madison seemed like a cool town, the one drive-by I did there long ago. Better than Waukesha, at least.
