23 Jump Street

I laughed. Not the greatest movie out there and totally formulaic but self-mocking enough for it to work. The "bad guy" behind it all was very funny. Great lines and delivery.

Die Another Day

Wife and I were lounging just as this started and I didn't change the channel in enough time to avoid her telling me that she was watching it, so we watched the whole thing. Not the first time I've seen it but it is the first time I've watched any of the more modern Bond movies after having seen the Daniel Craig versions.

Pierce Brosnan was born to play that role. He isn't as good as Connery - none of them are. But the problem with the movie is that now with the hindsight of how awesome the Craig versions have been these look like cartoons. The action is decent for Bond action but the effects weren't great (a sign of the times to be sure). But just the visuals and the "world" it is in becomes far far less believable when you balance it against Casino Royale and Skyfall. In the end watching it made me appreciate Craig's version that much more. They've done a great job revamping the character after Brosnan.

I will add this though - Judy Dench is awesome as M. She was great in the Craig one's to be sure, but she was really good in this one as well.

The Pianist:

Thought this movie was great. Brody was able to carry the movie throughout, and I felt none of the film's longer running time. 8/10

Ghost World:

Still love the hell out of this movie. I think it was my intro to Scarlett, and it is one of my favorite roles of Buscemi's. 8/10
 to both of those.

Ghost World is one of the few Scarlett movies where her mediocre acting doesn't hurt the role.

Olive Kitteridge

Really dark, depressing HBO miniseries starring Frances McDormand and Richard Jenkins. McDormand's character is really an awful person in to a large extent, but this is damn fine filmmaking. Highly recommended for lovers of drama with a little bit of gallows humor.

we all should share an hbo go subscription.

Keep thinking about Nightcrawler. Another thing that came to mind that elevates the movie is that it doesn't over explain stuff. A lesser movie would have needed to explain Lou's backstory and motivations. Great that it leaves things like that up to the audience. Watch this movie, people!

I was listening to a podcast about the movie, and one of the guys had a perfect description of Lou - cross Jeff Bridges in Starman with Patrick Bateman.

The first half - "I don't get why everyone hated this movie, I'm kind of liking Denzel's character"

The second half - :oldunsure: :X :

Finally saw Nightcrawler Wow, what an amazing movie. I give it a solid A.

I see Jake Gyllenhaal's character as part Tony Robbins, part Sheldon Cooper, part Hannibal Lecter and part Peter Sellers in Being There.

Amazing performance and I hated him, with a passion.

When he set Rick up to be shot, I said out loud in the theater "*******!". most people agreed with me.
And that is one of the best car chases I have seen in a while. Kept me riveted. Well worth the watch

Best movie of the year for me.
Was entertaining but felt like I was watching a Gyllenhall performance rather then a real person. Was a two-hour car wreck.
Odd statement. Of course we were watching a Gyllenhall performance. Not a doc, or based on actual event or something.
Thought Gyllenhall came off like a villain in a superhero movie among a "real" world setting. It was charismatic and entertaining but over the top IMO.

You aren't missing anything with this. Dark and depressing then it just ends. Murray is barely in it as well.

Top 5.

Dawson hasn't looked this good since 25th Hour. Niiiiiiiice.

Cedric has a scene I'm still cracking up over.

Overall all though it was disappointing. It's like in the preview when you see the "Hammy-time" lame jokes. There's a lot of that. Just a bit forced as were the Sandler and Seinfeld scenes. They were on the nose as opposed to surprising.

I typically love action revenge movies, but this one was just a little too much for me. Possibly the most violent movie I've ever seen. Sledgehammers to legs, hammers to head, burning alive, about 15 throats being slit, it's pretty much got it all. If you like the genre, worth checking out, but make sure you have a strong stomach.

3/5
Holy hell was this a violent movie. I thought it was a very good movie but you're right - you need a strong stomach to sit through this one. All the fbg's who typically rant about all the things they'd do to someone if that person hurt their kid...well, this is the movie for you. Takes the Mel Gibson/Liam Neeson/Harrison Ford rescue/avenge my family shtick to a terrifying new level.
This may very well be the most epic revenge flick ever made. Gritty and brutal, it kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish, but man, it is not for the weak of heart. Liam Neeson in Taken is like Mary Poppins by comparison.

Thought Gyllenhall came off like a villain in a superhero movie among a "real" world setting. It was charismatic and entertaining but over the top IMO.Always find it interesting how people watch the same movie and get different reads on a character or the movie itself. Sometimes he was over the top, but i think that was his inability to relate to people, and he goes into motormouth mode and sound like he is quoting a self help or business book. A lot of the time he was just watching and seemingly picking up traits of people he met. Thought it was brilliant.

I watched this last week...I enjoyed it overall and the climatic scene was as great as anything I've seen in an action movie in a long time. But I thought the story was too unbelievable and while Gyllenhall was quite good, he over acted at times. I'd give it a solid B.

Liked it more than Gone Girls, which I saw this weekend. Stylistically, that movie was beautiful and I thought the acting was decent (Affleck could have been more spirited), but I could not get over the plot holes.

just curious - what part of Nightcrawler was too unbelievable? I think russo was a tad much with her reaction, but i took the movie more as a satire so a lot of stuff with the plot didn't bother me.

This is the End

7/10

Really funny and enjoyable if you have watched the majority of these movies over time. I also became way excited about the movie while watching it when I read that Rogen and the director created a game where they tried to push each actor to his or her breaking part with weird/inappropriate stuff and they succeeded with everyone but Franco (guess there was a deleted scene where Franco, Hitler, and Tina Turner were doing blow in Hell).
I can't figure out why anyone would like this. A bunch of guys screaming at each other for most of the movie. It was like a 5 minute skit bloated to 1.5 hours with some good special effects thrown in.
it was bad. a few funny parts, but that's it.
I can see others not enjoying it as much as I did. It really felt you were hanging out with these guys. The self-effacing humor was off the charts. I thought the Cera scenes were outrageously funny, and I was pretty much sick of him (and his recent deluge of films), but he pulled off an incredible validation in the middle of being one of the bigger ##### in cinematic history.

Again, I can see why some people did not find it funny, but for those that it strikes a chord with, it can potentially be delightful. It was for me. And I rate movies how I think they are

4.24/5 stars
Enjoyed this as well. Fun and funny throughout although some of the scenes with McBride were a little over-the-top for me.

Just how quickly/easily everyone trusted each other - Russo trusting Gyllenhaal and vice versa, Gyllenhaal and his employee. How easily Russo brushed off her and the stations legal concerns. And how little resistance he got from the authorities, especially the police, on both the at-location front and investigative front.

Fully get the police thing. Hard to take nothing happening to people driving 100mph downtown. But on the flip side, watching him getting pulled over for a ticket would have been a bore in a good movie.

I didn't see it as a trust issue. I think it was just a function of them having want the other needed to get where they wanted to go. More of a business deal than a trusting relationship. What he lacked in the ability to relate to people emotionally, Lou was fantastic at knowing what buttons to push, and was seemingly one step ahead of everybody else.

I thought she was excellent in Her. But lord does she try to hard in some of her films. I liked her in Vicky Christina Barcelona. So maybe it takes a really good director to get the most out of her.

Felt this was by far the best Brosnan Bond movie. It had the old school Bond feel.

Craig is truly Bond. 2/3 of his films are already all time Bond classics in my book. We know the middle movie (between Casino and Skyfall) was garbage.

Jenkins' character was interesting. Everything else was torture. Especially considering it's four hours. "Tough" and "not easy" are the good reviews.

Snowpiercer

Awesome, awesome ride. Not quite blade runner level for a sci fi epic, but really good.

Eta: now that I've slept on it Id warn that there are definite plot holes and numerous moments that really defy logic and reality. But I still encourage anyone to watch it. Kind of a weird mix of animal farm, walking dead hunger games, and a tarentino movie (without the dialogue).

Night at the Museum - Secrets of the Tomb. Really tough to rate this...Maybe B-?

Most of the 1st half is awful. Dumb scenes that go on way too long. Ben Stiller looks like he wants to get the hell out of there and I don't understand why he dressed up like a Neanderthal.

Rebel Wilson is a waste and most of the cast looks like they don't care (With the exception of Owen Wilson and Steve Coogan).

Then they go to London and it changes.

New Characters (Sir Lancelot). There is a great fight with a 8 headed snake, another fight in an Escher painting and a funny bit about Pompeii.

Then a absolutely hilarious scene of the play "Camelot" which Lancelot thinks it is the real Arthur and Guinevere. Hug Ackman is fantastic as Arthur.

Then they go back to NY, Ben Stiller says goodbye to all. It got very dusty in the theater when he said goodbye to Robin Williams. Worth seeing for his last performance.

"Smile my boy, it's Sunrise"

Thanks for the recs on Blue Ruin. Solid movie, thought it was going to be great in the first half but it falls off a bit in the second. Still very good and worth watching. 3/5

Guardians of the Galaxy - 8/10

I dunno. I enjoyed the movie. But the trailer held such promise. I imagine that it was such a cool concept with such great characters that the movie studio probably realized it could be a mega-blockubuster and therefore, it couldn't deliver on the uniqueness that I'd love. The dialogue was stunted, the platonic/love interest forced and unconvincing. I loved the idea of this movie, and I loved the idea of the characters (BTW, Groot and the raccoon are freaking awesome characters, as everybody knows) but the humans and humanoids are the least convincing aspect of this.

Also, I had no idea how the studio knew it would be a blockbuster, but as a former IP guy in law school, can you imagine the cost of the rights to that freaking music? That means they darn well knew it was a massive hit, a quality and universal movie. This, though, makes me think of focus groups, product testing, and what the movie could have been. Regardless, however it got made, and whatever it was, Hollywood nailed Groot. What an awesome character. I don't think you can go wrong with this one, but it doesn't slip into love for me.

wait a sec... just remembered that we watched the mini-series/event, Ascension on ... syfy?

anybody else see this? aside from knowing from the get-go what the initial "twist" was, I am not exactly clear on how this thing ended. that is to say, I understand what happened, but I don't understand how somebody can end a series/event in this way- unless they're planning on having a follow up series/event.

specifically...

the main guy ends up being teleported by open-mouth girl to their destination planet? fin.???? that's it? doesn't matter what happens to him there? and the people on the ship? and what about open-mouth girl... why always the open mouth?

Tons of problems with the show, but there were some moments worth watching.

Edit: it was meant to become a series if the mini series did well, like Galactica.

Under The Skin

Have mixed feelings about this one. Some scenes were really interesting and the music was great, but for a slow-paced 'thinker' kind of film, the more I think about it the less I think there's to think about. Seems pretty cut and dry in the end, and there's basically no hints for the things that weren't explained so there's not much to think about there either besides letting your imagination run wild if you wish.

Still enjoyed it well enough. Though I can understand why some would hate it.
Soooo I finally just saw this last night - any opinions???

Couple of sci-fi movies I watched:

Predestination

- I dig time travel movies even if they aren't plausible. Interesting movie. 7.5/10.

I, Origins

- More of a movie set in the future with some sci-fi elements rather than true sci-fi. Good movie, 7.5/10.

Finally got around to Silver Linings Playbook. I had heard it was good but I didn't know it was going to be that good. At times it was whimsical, gritty, funny, awkward, and touching. Plus the cast was phenomenal. Really glad I watched it.
