2022 Music Thread. New Year, New Music. (2 Viewers)

I saw Kiwi Jr last night and their upcoming single is their best song yet. It hasn't been released yet as far as I can tell, so this doesn't really help but it's called "Night Visions" and it absolutely rocks. They will be releasing a new album this summer as well.

Made my 2021 AOTY ballot

The Smile is a strong Radiohead side project with Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood.  The Afrobeat flavored rhythms from British Jazz drummer Tom Skinner distinguish the sound from the mother band.  It's a lot better record than Atoms for Peace was but it's been a while since I listened to that one.

I've really liked most of the singles they've dropped ahead of the album...had the album on in the background yesterday but didn't really listen.

In other news...

the streak continues

Two new albums worth a spin from non-K-Pop artists from Korea.

Say Sue Me (세이수미) are inspired by 80s-90s indie bands, sometimes sounding a bit like Belle & Sebastian with noisier guitars.  Their new album is their first after the death of their drummer so it's darker with a slightly more polished sound that their earlier stuff.

The Last Thing Left

Bird's Eye Batang (새눈바탕) is a lot weirder than the familiar jangling of Say Sue Me.  They're a solo project by an anonymous Korean artist whose last album recorded as Mid Air Thief was among my favorites from 2019.  Bird's Eye Batang isn't as great on first listen; it's more soundscape than song-based with glitchy rhythms that resist settling into a groove.  Maybe I need more drugs to listen to it.

Spin & Stone

I was listening to Say Sue Me earlier and it's really good.

Pkew Pkew Pkew.. checked it out and I liked a few songs.  Too old probs.

I try and try with Kevin Morby..

Arcade Fire: still good.
The new album is solid, but not terribly exciting.  While it doesn't have any major clunkers like the last album did, there is nothing here nearly as good as the best songs from Everything Now.  Considering it is their first album in five years, it's a bit of a bummer that this is the best stuff they came up with to release.

I did not love the new Pkew x3 after the first time I heard it, but there were a couple earworms that had me revisiting it and eventually playing it on repeat the rest of the weekend - I am all in now - lol

I love this. I’ve missed good Radiohead.

I mostly agree with this but 'The Lightning' is constantly bouncing around in my brain, total earworm.

Not quite About Damn Time levels ( Lizzo) but pretty close.

RR.

the streak continues.

but at least, some other interesting options this week:

A Place to bury strangers

Nilufer Yanya

Foals (this sounds like bad disco.. I know they tend towards dancy stuff- which can be fine- but this is toothless bleh)

Wedding Present (I've been enjoying their recent stuff)

Spielbergs (!! big fan of their last- first?- album. new stuff songs similar in a good way)

Angel Olsen

Thee Oh Sees

Lizzo

Interpol

i don’t think ukraine was the best song at eurovision, there, i said it.  i understand the sentiment, but serbia was catchy.

This song rules. I wish I and II weren’t separate tracks for playlist purposes
I agree that The Lightning is quite good, and thanks to the magic of Audacity, I combined the two into a single track.

I have mixed feelings about his ska core revival.  Feels copy catty.  Those dudes were living it back in the day!

But what do I know.  Apparently this #### goes back to Skankin' Pickle, I thought it was new

Love JR in any case..

Good stuff - enjoying this one.

Looking forward to the horsegirl album coming out this week.

Ball Park Music are an Australian five piece who've been around for more than a decade. Their new album Weirder & Weirder isn't all that weird as far as music goes these days.

Ball Park Music touches the Beatles, Kinks, Go-Betweens bases that a lot of bands have but they're adept at taking the familiar off in unexpected directions after the second verse.  The album's level of craft is very high without a duff song in the bunch.

I'm so out of the loop when it comes to metal music

I was really into mastodon, baroness, red fang etc

are there any bands out there making interesting music? I don't mind melodic black metal music either.

Deafhaven?  Turnstile?  They are probably a little more post-metal and metal-core though.

I'll have to look into these, thanks!
King Gizzard and Thee Oh Sees have been doing mostly psych stuff, but also mixing in some pretty good, albeit strange, excursions into metal.

eta: Deafhaven is amazing, btw- but you're either buying into the growly vocals or not. I have to be in the right mood for it.

Tasty recommendation.  Already looking forward to listening to it repeatedly this summer.

I know I'll miss the Ripkenesque streak when it's gone, so for now I just have to celebrate Spotify's keeping Dead Can Dance alive and kicking in my so-call Release Radar playlist... since November.

Otherwise...some Beirut and continued A Place to Bury Strangers remixes.

But also some interesting things I'm looking forward to hearing:

Sports Team

Spielbergs

Dream Syndicate

Viagra Boys (song called Punk Rock Loser...basically their whole m.o.)

Yeah yeah yeahs & Perfume Genius (this could be amazing)

Nation of Language

these were all really good.

Sports Team was a bit more rocking their previous stuff (The Game)... a win, for me as a fan already.

Wedding Present tune I've heard before also good- Strike.

I’ve listened to some new stuff I like recently.

Vital Spirit

Devil Master

Astronoid

Blut Aus Nord

I was impressed enough by Horsegirl's album to buy tickets for their show here next month.  Inventive Post-Punk from three kids with rudimentary instrumental skills.

Anti-glory
That's great. Sounds like a minimalist Sonic Youth at their melodic best. I love that the drummer stands up to play the drums at one point and that they take a bow at the end.

Good stuff. Album out today. Versions Of Modern Performance. Let's see it!

I am the first Spotify listener to Horsegirl's "Beautiful Song." It's a little nineties indie, a little sour on purpose, a little beautiful, too.
