The middle-aged dummies are forming a band called "Blanket"! It's a cover band. (1 Viewer)

Even without that caveat, of course it's subjective.

I swear, we get into the dumbest arguments on this board.

i'm sorry gb. i was not arguing just fiddling with eagles shtick. very lighthearted here. the dead are friggin amazing. i'm better after my coffee.
for the record, I know they take a lot of abuse on this site, for whatever reason, but I like the Eagles a lot.

With that said my Top 5 American Bands (just my opinion, of course):
  1. Grateful Dead
  2. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
  3. R.E.M.
  4. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
  5. Wilco

Does "regular" Spotify do lossless yet or do they charge extra?

Apple Music does lossless and the quality improvement is noticeable.
what's "lossless"?
Good question...

Digitally downloaded or streaming music has traditional come in “compressed” forms, like the MP3 or more recently AAC, the format used by the iTunes Music Store. These are files that have pointedly squished so they take up less storage space on your smartphone or digital music player. This squishing process is “lossy”; the end result is missing detail that the previous, un-squished version had, specifically at the low and high ends, so that it doesn’t sound nearly as good.

“Lossless” doesn’t mean uncompressed, but rather it refers to a type of compressed digital audio file that uses advantaged data compression algorithms so that the audio track doesn’t “lose” any detail in the compression process.

Not yet. I’m an Apple Music person too. I did a Spotify trial last year so could listen to some of the playlists without ads. But cancelled once trial ran out and stuck with Apple -- Apple’s quality much better (even on Spotify’s highest quality setting).

(Currently listening to some Seiji Ozawa in Lossless. RIP.)

Dunno. My hearing is shot from squillions of rock concerts, so none of that stuff makes a difference to me.
same for me. when my friend suggests wireless speakers that cost $3,000, I laughed and said my hearing no longer lets me be able to tell the difference really and my $200 and $125 speakers are fine.

I mean it hasn't been that long since America belonged to England.

If you highlight your selection though with a brief writeup, that might draw people in more so than being part of a huge list - even if it's on YT.
Krista labeling which selections aren't on Spotify is a huge help. I listen to the playlist and then I go back to her list and click on the Youtube links for those that aren't on the playlist.
This is what Ive been doing too, time permitting.

Looks like it wouldn't work for me anyway (even if I could tell the difference) since I listen over bluetooth with headphones and speakers.

We should clarify that Maine qualifies because it was part of Massachusetts at the time. Not that I can think of any notable artists from Maine.

Late on this round but it's been a looooong week at work. Taking off the afternoon to enjoy the 60 degree sunshine while hiking a 6-miler - one of the giant perks of having a state park trail literally bordering your property. If I counted correctly, I only knew 14 of the songs (cover or original on the playlist), which not only says a lot about the gaps in my music history but also how old some of you f'ers are.

Songs That I Knew the Cover and the Original

The Dreaded Marco: So. Central Rain - Grant-Lee Phillips (R.E.M.) - like others, this was my favorite of the bunch.
Rockaction: I Heard It Through The Grapevine – Marvin Gaye (Gladys Knight) - what can I really add about this one?
Mt. Man: Always On My Mind - Pet Shop Boys (Gwen McCrae) - always stop on this when shuffling through SiriusXM.
DrIanMalcolm: Come On Eileen - Save Ferris (Dexy's Midnight Runners) - I generally hate ska, but I have a ska entry myself, so maybe all the horns have grown on me?
Oliver Humanzee: My One Desire - Freakwater (Ricky Nelson) - In a shocking twist, not only did I know this song, but also had a cover by Freakwater on my bigger list.

Songs That I Only Know the Original but Really Enjoyed the Cover

N/A

Song I Like That I Only Know the Cover but not the Original

titusbramble: It's Oh So Quiet - Bjork (Betty Hutton)
Dr. Octopus: Sweetheart Like You – Craig Finn (Robert Zimmerman) - Despite my love for The Hold Steady, I think their covers usually suck. Was pleasantly surprised here.
Simey: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down – Joan Baez (The Band)
John Maddens Lunchbox: (They Long to Be) Close to You - The Carpenters (Richard Chamberlain)

Songs I Liked That I Didn't Know Either Version

Don Quixote: Pills - The New York Dolls (Bo Diddley)
Krista4: I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow – Alison Krauss & Union Station (traditional)

Thoughts Already "Covered" Earlier

Galileo: You’re No Good - Linda Ronstadt (Dee Dee Warwick)

scorchy:

The Way You Wear Your Head - Charly Bliss (Nada Surf)

I almost picked this source album for a different song, but it just didn't make the cut. I like this. I own this tribute album on vinyl. I purchased it at a Nada Surf show in L.A. I like the original album much better than the re-workings of it.

Prior to this Nada Surf album, I only knew them as the guys with the novelty hit Popular and couldn't figure out how they could release something getting such great reviews. One listen gave me the answer. Also had another Charly Bliss cover up high but nixed it b/c it was youtube only. I really can't figure out if Eva Hendricks' goofy squeak is 100-percent schtick.

Anyway, texted "**** this shi-ite, I'm pouring wine" to OH a few minutes ago and then panicked. Good news - I sent to the right person!
Something similar happened to me yesterday after our weekly senior leadership meeting on MS Teams. Usually, I text snark to a fellow cynic offline on my personal cell, but yesterday, after it was over, I put in teams chat "Never thought that was gonna end - was ready to stab my ****ing eyes out with forks. Why does everyone have to give their stupid ****ing opinion about everything???" Walked down the hall to the bathroom and (TMI) mid-stream, started to panic that I accidently wrote it in the actual meeting chat. Luckily it was all good, b/c I'm not sure how I could have played that one off.

- Echo and the Bunnyman's cover of "People Are Strange" is good. It totally captures that cosmic carnival sound that The Doors had on some of their tunes. I especially like the organ on this song.
- Marvin Gaye's cover of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" is great. I love his vocals.
- Willie brought us the early 80s slow version of "Always On My Mind," and the Pet Shop Boys brought us the late 80s dance club version.
- The Brian Seltzer Orchestra's cover of "Caravan" is bad to the bone. That orchestra is lit up.
- Karen's voice and Richard's innovative arrangements made the Carpenters a dynamic duo in music, and "(They Long To Be) Close to You" is one of the many songs they put their stamp on.
- "Pills" is a fun scrappy cover by the NY Dolls.
- Craig Finn's vocal style is perfect for his cover of Dylan's "Sweetheart like You."
- Elvis shows off his vocals on "That's All Right." What a debut single.
- Nice harmonizing on First Aid Kit's cover of "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song."
- Rebekah Del Rio's acapella Spanish cover of Roy Orbison's "Crying" is different, intense, and pretty.

Next Up
An american alternate indie band take on Abba.
The cover is better than the original, but the low ranking is because the somg is not one of Abbas best

The other one was a world wide number one 80s smash that few know is a cover.
A certain handsome stranger did as he was a big fan of the original and was pissed off it wasnt released as a single

Something similar happened to me yesterday after our

friends kept sending disgusting internet porn to our office emails in 1999. I got sick of it, so I found the most disgusting porn you could find and sent it to my friends as retaliation. Unfortunately, one of them was named Kristopher. Our head of HR was named Kristin. I was stoned, typed in "Krist," and let auto-fill do the rest of the work and voila! The head of HR had me sending obscene pornography to her.

The senior VP, needless to say, was notified and I was put on watch. (Thankfully not fired.)

True story, folks.

God, no wonder about a lot of things.

I did find the audio quality of Apple Music better than Spotify even when I had the Bluetooth going. But I also have a pair of wired headphones that use instead of Bluetooth sometimes.

My first exposure to the internet at work was 1997. The newsroom got a couple of computers that were connected for everyone to share. The first non-work thing I did on them was look up Phish setlists. One day, a guy from my department came back to his desk from one of the internet computers and said, "uh, whoever was on there before me was looking at porn." It blew my mind that someone would a) look at porn at work and b) not bother to close their browser after doing so. Then as now, I was not tech-savvy, but I knew that mixing porn and work was a very bad idea. And yet it took quite a while for that notion to sink in at large.

Good thing your incident happened in 1999 and not now. Today, it would be an insta-firing at many places.

The real reason Neil Young isn't on Spotify is that he hates the sound quality. Much has been written about how highly he values sound quality. He pulled his music off Spotify long before the Joe Rogan controversy, and only put it back on after pleas from his fans. The Joe Rogan controversy was a convenient excuse for him to do what he always wanted to do, and justify it in a way that most of his fans would be fine with.

Yep. And the worst part was I knew how inappropriate it was and was sick of the file sharing. My friend used to send me pictures (.jpgs) entitled "Nomar." Thinking it was the Red Sox shortstop at the time, I would open it. It would be a picture of his dump. I was so pissed. Constantly. If ever somebody almost got hosed, it was me. I hated off-work dalliances on the internet at work. Thought it was unprofessional.

The people in charge knew that and treated me lightly. I invited them to go back through my internet history and the like. I was as mortified as they were. Oh well. That was over twenty-five years ago.

The two "out" people in our office found out about this and delighted in it. It was not a gay-friendly office (it was a conservative political think tank) and yet I was sympathetic and gay-friendly, so they invited me to a hopping restaurant/nightspot that they frequented. I had to decline, but there were people out there that were in hysterics at the thought of our stodgy HR department having to look at that video.

And such is a day in the life . . .

Aw, it's okay. There were no repercussions from it and only the HR woman was put in an unenviable situation. I could have been responsible for much worse.

Nomar. Jesus, those guys were something else.

Whew! That was a close one. Just watched #25 Navy beat #24 Puke in women's lacrosse 10-9. On mute, while listening to a Prince tribute on WXPN. Such is my life these days.
If my notebook is correct … Johns Hopkins is in your area. Are they still a lacrosse power? Remember seeing them sometimes back in the mid-1980s on ESPN.

I should probably post a new thread for this but I'm reluctant to venture out into the wilds of the FFA.

Last week, a woman that I see and say hello to regularly on my twice-daily dog walks asked if I could send her a picture of my dog because she's getting back into watercolors and wants to paint him. I took down her email address and sent her a couple photos of Milo. Today, she sent me an email telling me the painting was ready and to text her when I wanted to pick it up. She also gave me her IG handle so I could see it beforehand. What's the deal here? Do I need to offer to pay her for the painting? Can I just buy something for her dog? Do I need to do anything beyond a hearty "thank you"? Please help.

No clue whatsoever. That is extra weird.

Definitely gonna a need a separate thread for the experts to chime in.

eta* Sounds like you're on the hook if you ask me. Oof. That is . . . potentially manipulative and unpleasant. Or maybe she's just bored and has lots of time on her hands to paint other people's dogs?

You tell me.

When I first started at my job back in 1997 and was still in my government-mandated probationary period, my officemate (who was an early-30s gay woman) was a fellow movie junkie. Late on one Friday we were trading barbs from Kevin Smith movies when she announced it was time to head out to face the drive home. I confidently retorted "Try not to #### any #####s on the way to the parking lot." Ya know, straight out of Clerks. She gave me a 3-second long death stare before laughingly saying "Gotcha." Longest 3 seconds of my life, man.

Looking back, holy #### what an idiot I was. I can't believe I've survived in the workplace 27 years.

Just turn up with no money and say oh i didnt know you wanted money if she asks.
If she asks for money and you dont wanna pay, just say. Its ok i will only ask for a small commission for the image of my dog once it sells or she can pay upfront now.

My wife paints and does this sometimes. She doesn't ask for or expect any payment but does accept it if offered. She does them on 6x8 sheets.

- Whoa, I didn't expect this nice mellow version of "From the Beginning" from Dokken.
- TP and the  Breakers live cover of "Mystic" is dynamite. 💥
- Donald Fagen made his "Ruby Baby" cover into a Steely Dan tune.
- Dave Matthews Band has plenty of energy in their cover of "Burning Down the House." Nice!
- I didn't know the Circles song, so I listened to Post Malone's version and Of Monsters and Men's cover. Of Monsters and Men did a nice job on their cover.
- "Come On Eileen" is good. The female lead's voice fits well with the tune.
- Candlemass rocks on this "Black Sabbath Medley" cover. I don't know all the songs covered in the medley, so I just listened to the tune. 🎸
- I dig that jazz guitar in this Yes cover of "I See You."
- Kurt Elling's vocals sound good on this "Matte Kudasai" cover.
- I like Bjork's swinging parts on her cover of "It's Oh So Quiet.'
- The A*Teens are the junior version of ABBA on "Our Last Summer." Johnny, did you pick all these ABBA covers so that we would listen to the ABBA originals?
- The three not listed are repeats. I did listen to the intro of "You're No Good" again, cause it's so good. 🎬

I paint, and I wouldn't expect any money for doing a picture that I asked if I could do. She probably wanted to paint your dog for something to paint while she gets back into the groove of it. I don't see anything wrong with you giving her dog a bone or something as a nice gesture back. Just a thank you would be fine as well.

Hahahaha.
I can see why you asked this question.
31-22 are decidedly average or worse, although coming up next, #26 is better than the original. But thats faint praise.
#21 onwards are starting to get better.
The top 10, most are at least worth comparing if not better than the originals.
