Yeah, I can’t remember where I saw it or read it. Someone was knocking Penix and Nix for being too old, yet both men are the same age as Jayden Daniels.
I would think the more college experience, the better. Especially for QBs since the ones that take care of themselves can play into their late 30s and early 40s these days.
It’s that time of year I guess where everyone picks apart every player looking for faults and reasons not to draft them.
Penix/Daniels/Nix and Maye/Caleb/McCarthy are in two distinct tiers in one major way. The first three guys weren't super impressive early in their careers. The last three were. It's a big reason I wasn't surprised McCarthy went flying up draft boards. It's the main reason I am not going to be surprised if Daniels ranking falls a little bit. Because he wasn't seen as
draftable this time last year. 5th year senior, goes from undraftable to top 3 is REALLY unusual.
I think this is really the time of year, after the Senior/Super Bowls, we start seeing big boards that make sense. Because media like Jeremiah/Brooks/Zierlein/Brugler have actually had access to front office types, which they previously had not. The guys with contacts update their big boards, and the rest fall in line.
Perfect example is Trevor Sikkema. He does stuff for PFF, and does a podcast which I like a lot. Now, I like Trevor, and he does his own work, but he adjusts to what is happening. But he is really just one of the sea of draft guys like CBS and whoever else.
Feb 2, TWO WEEKS AGO, He does a two round mock.
No JJ McCarthy. In either round!! Now, this is the guys who have been evaluating and ranking players all season long. Good podcast by the way.
This was his mock 3 days ago. JJ McCarthy at #10.
And here he is on Twitter, yesterday. Suddenly in the last two weeks, he likes him more. I mean, this is all pretty obvious stuff. He caught up with the guys who actually have NFL connections.
In fact, it's pretty well known that Jeremiah throws some random names in his top 50 players rankings to throw off the wannabes. He will put some 3rd/4th round guys in his top 50, just to watch the wannabes update their mocks/rankings, and he drops them out later. Mike Renner talks about it in his podcast. And gives examples.
Combine will be the next round of shakeups. Some players rise and fall because of workouts, but also because the media gets to speak to teams in Indy, and find out where they differ from the NFL teams. After that, the draftniks go back and 'take another look' at certain players, and adjust.
